    Hello! I inherited three (cheap) clay darbukas that are “student model” quality, but when skinned, sounded lovely! They all need to be reskinned. Is it possible to reskin them and if so how? I’ve been scouring the net and you’re the first drummer who has a darbuka I can reference. The skins have been glued and rope is used as well. Thank you for any help you can give.

    Hi, you have mentioned hitting the rim with the first finger joint. Been practicing on a GEF metal darbuka during last 6 months (selftaught from UA-cam) and over time I have developed some kind of inflammation in the last finger joints of ring and index fingers on the left and index on the right hand... Whipping relaxed fingers at high speed towards the plastic head over a metal rim is still hitting the bones somehow. I try to hit closer to the rim for the Ka's and Tek's for clear sound it takes a toll on my joints, because when the fleshy tip hits the drum head 2 cm from the rim - the 1st finger joint naturally bangs directly across the metal rim edge. I managed to produce decently clear Teks and Kas with dooms and crisp slaps (had some pains in all 4 fingertips when I developed slaps techique, but it healed), even achieved some split hand Ka's with left hand index and ring fingers. But after I started to build up speed the pain became to occur more frequently. I know ppl might say it can be poor technique, but I made sure to follow instructions best to my ability and the sound I get seems good to my ears.I think I need to take a long break to heal my joints and now I wonder if darbuka playing is something that one can do for many years at all. Just bought my second GEF drum as well.. This pain/inflammation in fingers used to go away in 2-3 days, but now I have it for weeks.

      1. May be you Hit too Hard 2. maybe your drum is Tuner to high or to low so the Skin is Not flush with the rim. 3. everyone has different Body… my Fingers for example can bot take to Play Conga for more than two weeks of dayli serious playing just because the are grown in a way which makes a Part of the joint Injuried in a way weich can bot recover quick enough make me Play Conga for Long time… it’s just May Body… I strongly recommend to take one or two lessons with a pro. I know somebody ;)

      That is “normal” split finger technique… the super split builds up on that and is more or less a systemic way of training that use of the fingers. What exactly is your question?

      @@simontressin2406 my question is more about the overview , like i know these ones: - right1, right3 then left1, left3 - arabic alternation - right then left1,left3 - right1 , left13 then right 3, left13 - right1 , left 1 then right 3, left 3 My questions are: 1) are these that i summed up the only ones that exist? 2) which one is the best? @@mevlutkelle4083 It might sound obvious: There exist all possibilities you can think of. The best is what creates the sound you desire or which is needed to play the music. I can tell what I see as most commonly used: In Turkey mostly R1L1R3L3 and R1L1L3 the/and/or R3L1L3 Also index middle Ring of the right together as one. In Arabic countries mostly R3L3 or sometimes R3L2 Also R1L3L2 I prefer most of them time R1L1R3L3 and R1L1L3 the/and/or R3L1L3 Also A mix of R1L1R3L3 and super split I keep developing the thoughts on my choices…

    It is an absolute pleasure to dance to the sound of a ceramic drum with a natural skin over an aluminum and synthetic. I love my fathers ceramic darbuka, but the natural skin definitely doesn't do well at outdoor haflas, often requiring a trip to the fireside to keep it in tune.

    Wow! I"m surprised that darbuka ( that seemed to me more like an ethnic instrument) not only efficiently plays the role of a drum kit (with other percussion staff) but has it's own sound and charm that fits so well in that style of music. Of course it is because this instrument is in master's hands! And all the project in general sounds so impressive. Want to listen more!

    I put cloth in the neck to cut the ring…aluminum does have a sharper sound if that’s what you want…a natural skin on aluminum gives a really strong bass, but don’t know if any goblet drum these days would accept that; my oldie has a metal ring with bolts

    To make a kick like sound you need to tune it tighter so the rim goes slightly under the skin surface. That will make you able to hit the very edge of the skin, that will give you the kick like sound. But if you do that the skin will be too tight to do the hit and press trick...I don't know whether it is possible to get both of them all in one setting on a metal darbuka, perhaps you'll need to stretch the skin out a bit for that.

    • @D.2023
      @D.2023 6 місяців тому

      Hi! Did you ever get inflammation in the first finger joint on any of fingers? I developed this on ring/index of both hands cuz I think I hit rim a lot because the fleshy part of finger tips aims to hit 2 cm from rim for max clarity of sound, making the 1st finger joint to land directly over the metal edge/rom of the drum (2/3 cm from the tip is the 1st joint). My motivation for hand drums was to maintain hand and finger health - yet it seems I do a lot of damage to joints. Do you ever inflame your finger joints because of vigorous loud playing? How do you deal with it?

    Hello, how the hell do you install those raw hides? Is it hard? I can not find any tutorial about it on youtube. I see there are some small ropes, but it does not look intuitive. I contemplate about clay darbuka, but without ability to change the head myself it seems like an expensive one-way ticket.. Also, how do you even tune the tension on these things, like if it gets too tense or too low because the weather changed?

    • @simontressin2406
      @simontressin2406 Рік тому

      I recommend just to try it. It is glued to the body of the drum and must be soked with water. You can’t really tune it once it is dryed on the drum. You can use a lamp inside to heat it up to make it higher for some time. Or you can also use a heated pillow or hair dryer. It really not a rocket sience… but needs practice and experience - so you just have to start and give it some tries.
