    As a horn playing relative of Alan Civil, a second cousin, this was a very moving and a stunning discovery. It's a superb demonstration of the man as one of the greatest UK horn players that ever lived as well as his tremendous personality as a raconteur and wit and his knowledge of the instrument and its repertoire. He was a huge influence on me as a young horn player, and still is. Nobody can play a fortepiano note on the horn like he could. This is brilliant and invaluable entertainment and thank you so much for discovering this and posting it. 📯

    Thank you for posting this! I was Mr. Barrows' first "kid" student (1958) in his New York City days. I stayed close to him until his untimely death. BTW, I still play (Alex 107x) using a Tom Greer JB cup (aka B29) and Atkinson A rim. I have a Dell'Osa Barrows mouthpiece that Mr. Barrows, at a lesson, took from his Schmidt saying, "Here, kid, use this".The Dell"Osa is deeper than the B29; I know that Mr. Barrows, late in his career, worked with Walter Lawson on creating a mouthpiece. I am a Pathologist so my understanding of Mr. Barrows’ health at the time of this recording is bittersweet. But, I still hear his Tully Hall performance of Auf Dem Strom with Beverly Sills. Once again, simply said, thank you.

    The 1980 Horn Symposium was my first, as well. I met Frank Brouk, Phil Farkas, Meir Rimon and Alan Civil…and a whole bunch of crazy college players that are now playing and teaching all over the world. Gail Williams was the Heldenleben winner, and played a flawless recital. Herman Bauman played so well, I wondered if he was human! The Symposia are essential to anyone hoping to improve their knowledge and skills on the horn, plus it’s a great opportunity to network and study with masters of the instrument. It should also be noted that college and military representatives often recruit people there, if one is so inclined. The exhibitors include All of the custom horn makers, and everything one needs as a horn player from music to mutes. It’s ideal, if you’re looking to improve your toolkits and libraries. ❤ IHS ❤️ 💜Nancy💜

    Thank you both for this posting - fascinating and inspiring. I’m looking forward to hearing the Hindemith Eb althorn sonata on what you say could be the instrument he had in mind. I’ve always wondered about that, especially as it seems to me to be such a good piece of music and from such a generous composer.

    If you want a good laugh about this piece, go find the UA-cam titled "Siegfried's Chair Call by Stefan de Leval Jezierski". at ua-cam.com/video/HsIYol_MZys/v-deo.html where he uses a technique that Mr. Winter has obviously overlooked.

    I am searching the internet for all the low horn information that I can find. The issue I seem to be having is related to moving my face, especially where I shouldn't be. The tongue stopping thing, I think, will be helpful to me !

    • @waffle1012
      @waffle1012 4 роки тому

      @@alyssa2663 if people tell you to keep your face in the same place as your normal notes you will never be able to successfully play beefy pedal tones. You have to use a weird embouchure that is diffferent. I put my lower lip on the bottom of the mouthpiece and the top lip is around the middle of the mouthpiece and I can get some good beefy pedals
