      There are a few different kinds of snakes that look similar to a milk snake in Arizona, but if you found it down by Yuma it is a different kind of snake.

    Very productive trail. We’ve been in Tucson 4 years now and although we don’t specifically look for snakes we’ve encountered quite a few. We’ve encountered King, gopher, long nose, rattlesnakes, and one thread snake one night on our front porch (must have gotten lost). Have not seen a lyre or night snake yet, or coral snake, but don’t hike trails at night. Fun video. Enjoyed all the different colored diamond backs.

    Now someone needs to do a genetic study and see if these really are all descended from that single small population that was introduced during the eighties. Maybe they were actually there all along?

    When did they lump all the milk snakes as one species? I disagree with that designation the AZ milk looks like the Utah milk or what use to be Taylori.

    • @sonoranherpingadventures

      It would make sense that the milk snakes in northern Arizona are Utah milks and that milk snakes in southeastern Arizona are new mexican milk snakes, but I don't know that anyone has looked into it much at this point.

    What time of year was this? Early spring? Odd that we have no native Plethodontids in AZ. California has a bunch and AZ out-frogs CA so you wouldn't think the dryness would keep them out. Maybe there's an undiscovered native one somewhere up on the Rim.

    Fantastic video. I still have my first golden book from 47 years ago. lol. Amongst many others. Now are these milks considered variations of the Cealonops? The only tri colors that I ever found in Arizona were the more common Pyros in the sky islands. Never ever came across a milk there. I find it amazing having two completely different Lampro tri colors in the same state. And in some areas, quite close to one another in the extreme southeast portion of the state. I’ve must have driven through that habitat dozens of times, heading up to the mountains. I truly hope that you guys find that elusive milk. You seem to be a good group of peeps. My kinda peoples. It’s a bummer finding the DORs but at least you guys have some shot gun evidence of locale. You can explore during the day, even set up cover and look for natural cover. And you now have stretches of road to concentrate on. I’m quite confident that you guys will turn up that live gem. I’m pullin for U. 👍🏻🇺🇸

    • @sonoranherpingadventures
      @sonoranherpingadventures 5 місяців тому

      Along this same stretch of road only 3-4 miles away from where milk snakes are found, arizona mountain kingsnakes can be found. It's amazing how close together they can be. I don't know if our Arizona milks have really been studied to determine what they are but I suspect that snakes in Northern Arizona would be the same as the Utah variety while those from SE Arizona may be celaenops.

    When you keep saying “this time of year” - are you referring to the present or is this a compilation of older clips? I’m assuming it’s current since it’s a recent upload and nothing says otherwise, but as a North Carolinian it’s mind boggling that January would be an extraordinarily active snake season. Around here we pretty much don’t expect to see a snake at all from about November to March 😮 I mean, obviously I know it’s significantly warmer there, but I’d still have thought the coldest “relative” time of year would make snake activity lessen.

    • @sonoranherpingadventures
      @sonoranherpingadventures 7 місяців тому

      I did not mention the exact time of year to be a little overly cautious about protecting the animals, but I can confirm that it was not in December or January!

    How far should one stay away from snakes so a snake is not scared. Is it generally 1 meter or 2 meters for example. If a snake is agitated do they need longer distance gap

    • @sonoranherpingadventures
      @sonoranherpingadventures 7 місяців тому

      They can be frightened by you even if you are much further away if you are approaching quickly or making lots of noise/vibrations. Most of the snakes that I find in the videos are found in a roadway and so I don't mind agitating them because they often need to be removed from the road so they are not run over by oncoming traffic.
