The third player was head and shoulders above the other two. However, great job by all and for being brave enough to put yourself out there. Brought back memories I had from my masterclasses with Geoffrey Gilbert and William Bennett in the 1980s. Wish I had those recordings!

Thank you so much for this! I initially signed up but had to unfortunately miss it last minute, so I greatly appreciate the recording! Where can we get the score/sheet music please? I have three NAF (A, G and F#) from Woodsound Flutes (Brent Haines) and they are beautifully crafted and sound incredible (but very pricy!!!). But, I’m still a beginner/intermediate so not sure your experiences with them? Thank you again and I look forward to more lectures like this!

I love your information on the different flutes. Lots of "A-ha!" Moments. I'm not sure I can tackle the song, but I do have a silver flute, several D & G flutes, too. I love my Butch Hall concert and Northern Spirits ABS flutes. After watching your video, I'm going to try the AO flute. Thank you!!

I enjoyed your video and discovered it this a.m. before my flute lesson. It is a wonderful warm-up, bringing awarenes to parts of the anatomy that I can begin to understand and access in my mind and the physiology. However, I play the traverso which requires the ability and technique of constant discovery; each note has its own quality and is felt in different parts of the mouth or the body, which can give a full bodied tone. What I learned today was where the “ang” sound is located in the mouth because it is essential for the F natural, which is one of the weak notes on the traverso. Thank you for that!

This was a very good talk but you mentioned the core reason why young students choose instruments is because of their own biases and not because of their directors. Could you go in more detail about that because that seems like the root cause.

I learned a lot from your videos. I’m a flute student for 5 years. I started flute lesson at age 69 I truly enjoyed playing flute I practice diligently everyday but I still a beginner. Right now I have a hoarse voice for over a month and before that I had a bad cough for a month . Two weeks ago I went to see EENT and found by the scope that I have vocal cords nodule. I couldn’t play flute like before anymore which makes me very sad. Right now I try to rest my voice but not completely. I still played flute a little bit everyday . I’d like to know how to get rid of the nodule and get over hoarseness. Am I going to get worse if I continue to play flute

I did one curtain audition in a room for All region in 2008. In 2021, I did my first on stage pro audition. Then failed 2 taped prelims for major symphony. Then another live semifinal but not advance. Then played some recitals for on stage experience. Then took another pro audition, which was in a room. I failed it. 2 weeks later, another professional live audition (i blundered an excerpt at the start, but kept going). 2 weeks later, Sept 9, 2023, I won substitute with a pro orch. Already playing with 2 paid orchestras. My next one is a substitute role audition for Dallas Symphony. I played at that big Meyerson stage before so I have some advantage. I find the only way to be good at auditions is to take more auditions. No substitute. Practicing at home doesn't help. Oh... and do dress up for a live audition (especially if it's not blind).
