Minnesota Goodwill Thrift Store Pricing Has Become Ridiculous! Retired and Thrifting to Resell eBay
Wow?! I hadn't been inside a Goodwill store in a very long time. Who is determining these prices? My favorite places to shop for reselling is the Goodwill Outlet and local church rummage sales.
If you don't have easy access to either of those options, try telling people what you do! I have friends and co-workers give me their items they were going to donate. Check local Facebook Marketplace listings for items that people are giving away for free. And don't forget to just source in your own home. I bet you have items you are not using that other people would love to have in their homes!

Part Time Semi Retirement Job: We Became Rover Dog Walkers! Get Paid to Exercise / Retire and Work
I don’t think it’s that Goodwill and other thrift stores have become greedy. It’s simply that daily they watch resellers come in checking everything on their phones and hoping to buy cheaply to resell at a huge profit. They have decided to get their share of the pie which is very fair. I love shopping thrift stores for myself so I don’t mind paying their higher prices. But I truly wonder where poorer people now find necessities at a price they can afford.
@@scrabbleking1 - I so agree. What happened to the stores where people could get clean, desirable items at an affordable price? It used to be the Goodwill. They are a non-profit organization who obtains their inventory for FREE.
I only go to thrift stores on senior discount days. Goodwill has gotten greedy 😑
@@bobbipetty7411 - Me too! I used to be able to use coupons on the other days. They did away with that. Goodwill has lost their way.
All Goodwills across the country are raising their prices from what I’ve seen on other channels. It’s crazy.
@@trinasyoutube - Who is the buyer they are trying to attract now? Their pricing makes no sense at all to me!
I was in Minneapolis the end of June this year and was excited to shop at a few goodwills during our visit with family. I was shocked on the prices there. Way higher than I pay in a suburb NW of Chicago.
@@cyndijobes - It’s truly so disappointing. Who do they think their buyers are? They are not appealing to anyone anymore.
The wall hanging is lovely
Well done on two good finds 😊
Goodwill is also putting so much online. Our Savers stores are high. Their overhead is higher. Our Goodwills are horrible in my area.
@@pennyskelton1851 - It has gotten out of control!? Who is their buyer? Thats why I see so much of it end up at the Goodwill Outlet. With the $34.99 sticker still on it. Pricing it lower would help so many people in the long run.
I love your videos, thanks for taking me along!
@ - Thank you so much for the support! 💕
Thank you for sharing your videos! I am just getting back into re-selling. My husband passed away 2 years ago and I am trying to downsize our large farm home. Going thru the items here before donating to bring in some extra money. A question about the things that you buy at rummage sales and thrift stores, specifically the loveys and blankets. Do you wash all of these before you ship them? I would assume so, but is there a particular detergent you use? Again, I love following your videos!
@@janicejones6202 - I’m so sorry for your loss. We began to be more serious about downsizing when my mother passed away and I had to clear her home. It’s become a nice way to earn extra income - a great way to make money at any age. I do wash all the items that I can wash. I use a fragrance free detergent. I always think the buyer will wash again with their preferred brand.
Our closest Good Will is a huge one and the prices are really inconsistent. Usually they are insanely cheap or very overpriced. What is funny is when the item still has its Ross price tag on it and it’s less than the Good Will price.
@somenygaard - It’s really hard to understand?! Who is teaching the pricers the process? How does it make sense to upcharge when the price tag is on the item? Craziness.
I have noticed the pricing going up too.. Minnesota Native here;))
I have noticed that too.. Minnesota Native here;)
@@jillglass4914 - Right?! There is no rhyme or reason for how things are priced anymore. Except that it’s all overpriced! 🤣
C'mon Goodwill ... you are a non-profit organization getting your inventory for FREE. Pass some of that savings on to your buyers - whether they are resellers or people who prefer shopping second hand!
Do you sell exclusively on eBay?
@@somenygaard- I resell on eBay, Poshmark, Mercari and Facebook Marketplace.
Love the videos- you are a natural at this!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. ❤❤
@@denisespicks122 - That’s so nice of you to say. Thank you! 💕
Just found your channel today and subscribed. My son lives in Minnesota. I need him to hit up some church rummage sales!!
@@jenme40 - That’s great! Thank you for subscribing. I think the church rummage sales here are so awesome. Especially the small town ones!
I discovered Bins 8 months ago, and absolutely love treasure hunting. This winter I have so many cashmere to wear, I never had in my life time! Wraps, sweaters, scarves, ponchos - love my collection! ... and so much more. I also started selling on ebay, as a part timer, and really appreciate $$ I am making.
@@togetherrrr - You really can find some great pieces at the bins. It’s hard for me to pay retail prices now. I always pick up cashmere too 💕
What does the 'sold via promoted listing' mean? What is a promoted listing?
@@sotrue5108 - eBay gives you the option to promote your listings. Anything over 2%. I usually do 3%. Unless the item is really sought after and not available. It’s supposed to help keep you higher in the search algorithm.
Nice to see a fellow Minnesotan and fellow retiree. Enjoy the videos. My last job before retiring three years ago was with Goodwill and in their auction division here in the Twin Cities. I was a media specialist. Learned a lot. Keep up the videos.
@@steelepropp434 - That’s awesome - Appreciate the encouragement and thanks for watching!

Some people don't want the memories of their wedding LOL! When I divorced my husband, I trashed all of our wedding photos etc., my mother asked how come I didn't want to save the photos, and I told her, who wants to be reminded of a bad marriage that is no longer LOL!
@@dana44ism - Agreed! The memories that went went that dress must not have been very pleasant. Here’s hoping better things came her (and your!) way 💕
I'm surprised you're not bringing your water in a reusable bottle, all this plastic is such a waste.
@luciollelsa - Such a great comment. You saw in the video how I had to cover my cart when I left it. I always carry a reusable bottle with me. And I had a very expensive one stolen out of my cart at this particular outlet. So now I wash out and carry that little one reserved for the bins only. That one bottle has been used over and over and over again 💕
Where can I purchase the items you find?!? Thank you in advance ❤
The bins intimidat me, lol
@@Willsreclaimedvintage - I get it! 🤣

@@Willsreclaimedvintage - I’m so glad! Thanks for subscribing.
@@RetiredandReselling123 FOR sure!!
Nothing new. Many are doing it. I would question selling on Ebay as they're a little more picky about what they sell.
I like the hard goods also. I got to go to a bins first time 2 times last week it just opened. My husband goes to the Dr 2 hours away, I loved it I never want it to go off my bucket list. Do they send the stuff to another store? It had to come from some place to begin with. There was not that many people there.
@janecannon5567 - Shopping this way really can be fun for treasure hunters like us. Some of the items come directly as donations from the public. And some of the items I see have a Goodwill tag on them. Local Goodwill stores purge their inventory and send it to the "bins." If it doesn't sell here - it heads to a landfill.
Looks like you made out quite well ! This time of year you should do well on those items with tags, esp. the Hard Rock Paris shirt ! :~)
@@Jane_Dow - I thought so too! That’s what keeps you coming back. You just have no idea what you’ll find. And everyone is looking for different things 💕
Your bins are so clean. Your prices are better than ours too.
@pennyskelton1851 - I always feel like I need a shower when I get home from ours! 🤣 What state do you live in?
@RetiredandReselling123 I am from Kansas City. Right now I am selling my fabric stash. I had enough for multiple lives! I sold a lot during the pandemic. But I love repurposing. I thrift almost everything if I can.
I'm glad you were able to find all the books
@@carol.luna.stella - I was so happy to have found all eight too! 💕
You can find some really unusual items at the "bins" - even your wedding dress! It can be intimidating and a little chaotic. The store is fully of energy - but also full of some great treasures. Some to keep and plenty you can flip for a profit. Come along with me as I take you into one of Minnesota's Goodwill "bins" stores.
I think you found some lovely items.
New to reselling, and I'm learning so much from your videos !!
@@BeckyG-ip2ns - Oh that makes me so happy! Thanks for watching and for letting me know 💕
I really like it that you described how things were priced, by type, Pounds, etc. I've never been to the Bins, but would like to sometime in the future. I'll remember not to go on Fridays ! lol
@@Jane_Dow - I’m so glad you liked the video! I visited a different Goodwill bins in town and am putting out another video tomorrow 💕
@@RetiredandReselling123 I'll be watching for it ! :~)
Why does it matter what you find!
I love the bins! It feeks like such a treasure hunt. I haven't gone since May - trying to work through my "death pile" first, lol. I usually go to the St. Paul bins & find loads more compared to the BP location - but it's bigger & more hectic than BP - so probably not for you 😉 So fun to watch your videos & see the local perspective.
@@shellyok9 - Thanks for watching! The St Paul bins may put me right over the edge. Hahahaha. I am going to head to the Chanhassen bins and see what treasures I can find there 💕
@RetiredandReselling123 I have yet to make it out to the Chanhassen bins - looking forward to seeing your experience! St. Paul would definitely be too much for you. I like it because they tend to have a good amount of hard goods. BP tends to be heavy on clothes, & I mostly avoid clothes, lol.
I'm fortunate to live about 25 min. from our local Goodwill outlet. I have so much fun there but it can get aggressive. I don't play that game....I go dig after everyone has rummaged. It upsets me that people dive onto the pile and THROW things around and break them. Our outlet just charges by the pound for everything....it's $1.59. Ours does not carry any glass at all - it's new and huge and clean. The employees are constantly sweeping and picking up items.
@@cynthiahicks1909 - I also wait for all the aggressive people to leave the newly rolled out bins. There truly is enough for everyone. And we all like to buy different things. All that “new bin” energy makes me a little nervous 🤣
Great that you were being selective, but would have enjoyed seeing more “found” items, rather than the things you didn’t choose to take. Good luck on your next trip to the bins!
@@cindytalwar8438 - I showed everything I found at the end of the video!
I'm picking up a dog brush tomorrow. Thanks and great channel
@@Kens-bin - That’s great! I also use it on fur and doll hair all the time.
I over do on packing . I use freezer bags alot . I have blue for men and pink for ladies
@@Kens-bin - Love that!!
There was a Goodwill Outlet close enough to me to make a trip a few times a year but it moved further away. And that's okay. I could only go on the weekend and the resellers made it an unpleasant experience. They were either swarming over the latest bin or lined up along the walls with their multiple carts, waiting for the next bin to come out. It felt very predatory.
@@angela-ti1np - I totally get it! The energy in the room is a lot for me. Trying very hard not to be a reseller who makes it unpleasant for others 💕
Yeah, Im in the Phoenix area and unless I'm very aggressive, I can't get close to the bins. It's not worth it to me. I ended up being really angry or sad.
@ surpriseitsus9622 - My favorite way to source inventory is a “fill a bag” church rummage sale. Such a calm atmosphere. I’ve found some great items waiting until the last day! I’m not a fan of the bins - but the price at the regular goodwill is just so high.
@RetiredandReselling123 it's the same here for church sales, the book and hard goods resellers with their scanners, the younger clothing resellers, then the jewelry and toys/children's resellers. Oops, I forgot electronics resellers. It's ruined for me or I need therapy to be much more assertive/aggressive. I'm shy and quiet. My own fault. Blessings to you for being so nice.
@@surpriseitsus9622 - Thank you 💕
I so agree with you about taking care to ship things. My husband and I always sign the invoice and carefully wrap and package things. I think it matters and shows that you care about them receiving a nice product!
@@kathleenmcbride4838 - I totally agree! I am really thankful that buyers actually buy from me - I look at it as my way of thanking them 💕
Great details...subscribed
@@TSunshineful - Thank you so much!
I’m curious what you consider a reasonable profit after shipping and boxes, packaging ect. For example at what price do you stop considering selling something? Thanks.
@@somenygaard - Great question! So much of what I sold in the beginning was things from our home. And now when I shop at the Goodwill outlet and church “fill a bag” sales, my cost is really quite minimal. Rule of thumb that I have used: sell for $20, pay up to $3. Sell for $30, pay up to $7. Sell for $50, pay up to $15. Sell for $100, pay up to $25/$30. Boxes are from neighbors. Buyers pay the shipping.
It can be a crazy experience! One that I was a little intimidated to try at first. The store is full of energy - but it's also home to some really great bargains that you can buy and flip for a profit. Come along with me as I take you into the Goodwill "bins" store.
Hey! Thank you for showing. Very helpful! Keep up the great work.
You may just think to walk by these items on the tables at a church rummage sale or on the shelves at the thrift store! You literally can sell almost everything on eBay. Just keep an open mind when you are out on a sourcing trip!
