    Conflicts over doctrine, methods of worship, or social issues can lead to divisions within the Christian community. This can create an environment of disagreement and undermine unity.

      They certainly can. It’s not a perfect system, but there is no denying the tremendous good they have also done. Plus, it’s not only about medication, but simply acknowledging that real mental illness actually exists and is a a real medical condition and not just state of mind

    I don't think I've heard the whole talk but I got the impression he was attacking some of the more modern issues that seemingly popped out of nowhere in recent times. E.g. ADHD, ADD, perhaps even gender disphoria and similar. I wouldn't go so far as to say these are "fake" or something like that, but you also can't help but notice how these things pop into existence and magically become billion dollar industries for pharma overnight. If there aren't enough issues to get adults hooked on more drugs, we suddenly have loads of issues to get kids hooked on drugs too. Won't be long before we've got our babies and toddlers on various medications for new acronym issues. You can't tell me 90% of humans require lab chemicals to live normal lives. Something is very wrong, whether spiritual issues or otherwise. Again, that isn't to say they are fake or that those people aren't experiencing something real, but there is some small merit to the idea that we should tackle these things spiritually and nanturally and physically first, before running to pharma and doctors for pills. But here's the thing, if you don't get pills, then the only other option is to psychologically get yourself through, mentally, physically, spiritually. In other words, don't take drugs when it could be something like poor diet and sleep. Mold in the house, anxiety and stress in life, allergies, etc. It also seems to me MacArthur was just repeating some stuff he read in whatever that book was he mentioned. Perhaps he didn't express the ideas very well. I didn't get the impression we should never seek medical help or medical/mental professionals. Just that it might be the case that a lot of our mental issues are more spiritual rather than it be the case that our bodies are lacking in pharma drugs, which isn't a medical condition. Nobody is sick because they lack enough pharma drugs. So is it possible to reverse the sick without them? It's worth exploring. Our culture seems to have two types of people; one type rushes to the doctor every time they sneeze or cough or hiccup and take everything handed to them. The other type has massive distrust of "the system" and ends up down every kind of natural healing side circus there is, from energy healing to sound to oils to eastern medicine, to accupuncture and this stuff can get bad spiritual too. We have to protect ourselves from the wolves on both sides. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness (Matt 6:33). In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths (Prov 3:6). I think as long as you are in prayer and seek wisdom in counselors and move forward, God will direct your path. Be your own advocate in health, do things naturally if possible.

      As much as I wish I could take a more moderate stance, there’s a well-known example of an individual who is dealing with what I believe was schizophrenia, and he was advised by MacArthur to go off of his medication, after which the individual committed suicide, MacArthur then criticized this gentleman for not being faithful enough. Id love to be corrected if this is untrue, but this is how I understand that it happened.

    I’m a fellow scrooper. I have prayed to be healed and God, in his sovereignty, has not answered that prayer yet. In the meantime, I go to therapy and take meds, and use some cognitive “tricks” that sometimes help. I have wondered, through the years I’ve struggled with depression, anxiety, and OCD, if the healing I really need is of the soul and spirit and not necessarily of the body.

      I have wondered the same thing since I have the same issues. The sad thing for me is my OCD began in childhood, and now at the age of 66 I can put a name on it. All those years, all the psychiatrists, all the therapists, the hospitalizations, all the ineffective treatments, no one ever told me I had OCD, the most terrible aspect of my suffering. I believe God revealed this to me by leading me to articles on this subject. I’m not self-diagnosing, just recognizing the symptoms. It takes very specific medication and therapies to address it. I pray I can get better and actually be able to serve the Lord in some way without the crippling anxiety and fear it has caused me.

    Well said Adam. Some folks forget that the brain is an organ, not a machine. It is constantly altered in response to external forces--good and evil. Sometimes talk and compassion soothes the dis-ease, sometimes Prayer alone suffices to restore mental health, and sometimes a chemical restores the brain to a level that allows it to function correctly and perhaps heal. If we hold to JM's position, the slippery slope brings us to the "no medical treatment" for all diseases and injuries. Twice a day I pray for a long list of ill people (sometimes for you), but never with the arrogance that my prayers ought to usurp the known healing paths God has already provided.

    Good video Adam! Thanks for addressing this very important issue. I think John MacArthur needs to reread Job and Ecclesiastes. 😂 It seems there's a "Tower of Babel" problem that's happening in all our care structures right now - an inability to deal with the fact that we are dynamic creatures, and we have hearts, spirits, minds, and bodies that are interdependent on each other. A physician wants to assume everything is physical, a psychologist everything mental, and a pastor everything spiritual. As the saying goes: to a hammer, everything is a nail. Proverbs tells us that a joyful heart is good medicine, and a crushed spirit dries up the bones (17:22); also, by the sorrow of the heart the spirit is crushed (15:13); furthermore, it is a strong spirit that man endures sickness, but no one can endure a broken spirit (18:14). Yes, heart issues can lead to spirit issues. Yes, spirit problems make physical problems worse. What that doesn't say, is that all physical and mental problems come from heart and spirit problems. We live in a fallen world - sometimes it's just cancer, no spiritual attack; sometimes it's just an anxiety disorder, not a deep heart/sin issue. We need to be able to address these issues within individual segments but also keep in mind they are sometimes, but not always, interconnected.

    The crisis of iconoclasm stemmed from a deeper heresy - the rejection of the God-man, Jesus Christ. The Incarnation, the divine second person of the Holy Trinity becoming man, is a profound mystery that shook the very foundations of the cosmos. Even the angels, some say were bewildered. Icons, then, became a battleground for this central belief. The councils emerged as a response to this crisis

    • @ScroopGroop
      @ScroopGroop 5 місяців тому

      I’m actually a little bit bummed out that I didn’t wait to post this until I had hung up my icons 😆 that would’ve helped demonstrate that I have no opposition to icons themselves, rather, I take issue with the fact that the council in question wildly overcorrected the issue and has created an additional criteria to attain salvation.
