I think it was a great buy. When I clean equipment, using a slightly damp dish washing cloth with a small amount of dawn cleans this stuff very well. I cringed when you put it on top of the turntable dust cover. Put a bath towel over it first in case there is something on the bottom that could cause it to scratch it.

I miss the thrift stores in Canada, over here in the UK the charity shops are getting boring and expensive, i mainly buy cheap books from them now.

I keep my rounds at the second hand stores in my town on a regular basis (we have about 8-10 of them), looking mainly at electronics and CD's/cassettes, sometimes other stuff as well if i spot anything in particular for my home or to sell off. A really good deal in 2019 was a basic Nakamichi BX-100E silver faced cassette deck in fully working condition for (hold on to whatever you can) 7 euros! Now THAT was a deal of the year back then, still one of my best purchases ever. I still have it but after using it on a daily basis since then it now needs some look over, new belts and some idler tire i think. Also bought an early 70's digital frequency meter with nixie tubes for 6 euros, that i later sold for about 170, although that was a service object that i didn't want to ruin with my poor skills. I don't think the store staff had a clue of what it even was, but I did moahahaha 😀

1978-1979 Radio Shack catalogs, about $160, included a set of small bookshelf speakers. RS also offered a similar unit with a cassette. You could add a minichanger to this for just $50 more. Similarly-featured models were offered under the names General Electric, Lloyds, Soundesign, etc. as well as some department-store names like Montgormery Ward, Sears, and JC Penney. Power output is probably less than 5 watts per channel 'clean', but don't let that fool ya. Pair it with a decent set of speakers like some Dayton B452s or B652s and it'll probably surprise you.

Maybe the money counter came from someone who owned a vending machine company or a Laundromat.

More often than not, trips to the thrift stores can be somewhat disappointing. Sometimes though you run across the find of a lifetime. That's what keeps me going.

This past Friday, January 24th, while visiting my local Value Village, I nearly bought a new old stock GE cassette tape answering machine that came with three blank cassettes and everything in the box was in pristine unused condition, but the moment I tried to play a tape, I noticed a noise and the spindles weren't spinning at all, so the belts must have rotted at the very least. At $10.99 for a non-working product, I decided to leave it behind rather than tinkering and then possibly discovering that the belts were not the only problem. In any case, although it was cool (and it was frustrating when it powered up, but didn't function properly), the price made it simply not worth the nostalgia factor. Oh, well; the hunt continues... :)

I have an identical Telefunken Gavotte that I bought in upstate New York, US, at an auction some years ago, for $12.00 total. When you Google it, you see some decent prices. It has a big sound. He doesn't mention the tuning eye, which gets to maximum brightness when your station is fully tuned in. Not only do I own this radio, I also own a red Dust Devil identical to the one you see in this video; it sat unused for about 25 years, but I've been using it recently.

When that unit was designed and built, I don't believe 8-tracks was even a thing any longer. But it was thoughtful of them to include it anyway lol

Interesting how youtube suggests things out of the blue. Never heard of you till tonight. Watched 4 videos, thumbs up and subscribed. Enjoyable hobby. Wish that VV still put decent stuff out on the store shelves, but here in Saint John, NB, they long since started to send thing to auction, or so I have heard. Things with missing buttons and knobs will still appear as they can't get top $ at auction.

A lot of thrift/charity stores just do a electrical safety test (PAT test) but do no function test, i've been caught out a few times this way.

A close look at the record/playback head will give you an answer pretty quickly. If there are any visible signs of wear and you're not into head lapping, it's toast.

I ran into that model for repair and restore a few months ago. Not a bad unit…
