Safely Using Your Bike Friday, An Interactive Relationship: The Bike Friday Bicycle Inspection
Using a bicycle is an interactive relationship. Like any bicycle, your Bike Friday not indestructible, it’s frame and various components are ultimately subject to wear and tear. While nothing lasts forever, regular safety checks, as frequent as before each ride, can catch issues before they become problems and ensure your bike is in optimal safe riding condition.
When performing a safety check areas to focus on include:
• Your stem and saddle are properly secured and adjusted.
• Your tires are inflated to the correct PSI.
• Your Quick Release (QR wheel retentions system) is securing your wheels adequately.
• Your brakes are working properly.
Special attention should be paid to the fork and frame. These key elements may not be as obvious as a squeaky brake or a low tire but they are also subject to wear and tear. Your Bike Friday frame and fork is engineered to be compact enough for easy folding/ disassembly yet ride like a full size bike. There are many high stress areas including:
• Fork crown
• Tube junctions
• Clamping/ binder areas
Look for signs of fatigue stress in the form of:
• Cracks
• Dents/ deformation
• Ripples in the paint
• Unusual noises or unusual riding sensations
When looking for fatigues stress on frame and fork, wipe the area off with a damp rag. Some people will find it easier to have a flashlight in hand.
We appreciate your business and would like you to safely enjoy your Bike Friday for many years to come. Please take a few moments before your rides to ensure it is in safe operating condition. If in doubt, please ask us! If you find anything wrong, please do not ride your bike, contact us OR have a trusted local bike shop review the issue.

Thanks, just bought my first internal gear hub and want to change the tire. Well done. Cheers
Thanx for video.
Good to know. Thanx!
For a video that claims to show you how, you sure are struggling!
You just saved me bro! Thanks buddy! My daughter laughed and basically said all the new videos skip stuff and a beginner can’t figure it out.
what trailer structure is this?
Best video ever
My front brake cable does not have enough slack to slip the pin in place! It is not a new bike, I had to change the tire. Is there a way to get slack on the cable?
Very informative. Thanks. And I'm glad to see you back at work after the finale of Shameless, Mr. Macy.
My Bike Friday has a problem. Over time, the threaded steer tube on the fork has worn “threads” into the stem post , if that’s what it’s called. Now, it is very hard to remove the stem post when folding the bike. It goes back on easy, but the internal threads that have been worn into the female part makes trouble. I have made a pry tool that aids in getting it apart, but it’s kind of a pain.
Thanks for this video! Was helpful overall, as I had to figure out how to make my New World Tourist racks work. Did have a question, about the Spacers. I got mine second hand, and did find some spacers, but were not metal spacers like in this video. Does it matter what material the spacer is? Also, how do I determine the size/length of the spacer I need? The ones I ended up using was about 3/4 inch spacers for the rear rack bolts, to ensure it clears the brakes. Is that too much?
Thx!
Bit late on this but I'm back on an old bike. This was a great explanation, thanks.
Very helpful mate, thanks so much topman.
Hello I picking up a pocket nomad , how do you remove the rear tire? When flat
Genius. A man for the people, huzzah!
Is this tutorial good for a rear wheel shimano brake adjustment ?
Thank you. Simple and to the point.
Spent fortune in Alfine DI2, even the Shimano shop cannot get it to work, crap info on the web, it's like some sort of secret society. This is my first foray away from Campag, never again.
thank you
Honestly the best, easiest & straight forward videos I've ever seen, no need to ever watch a brake video again! 💯👍
Thanks for saving me $40
Thanks for teaching us and save money ! Very clear instructions, simple tools
UGH !!!! The ad before the video starts is about how great gun ownership is !
Thanks for sharing, I was wondering if I could upgrade my priority Apollo 11 belt drive to di2. I think it’s possible now.
This is ABSOLUTLEY NOT THE WAY to set up mechanical disc brakes. A specially if only one side is moving other is solid. PALM FACE. When he started talking about levar regulator adjustmsnts I knew he is amateur ! Another bike expert.
Thank you!
Stellar video. Exactly what I needed to adjust my brakes PROPERLY. Thanks to you and your cameraman/editor for taking the time to post .
Would really have helped knowing about this video when I put mine on. I worked it out but took a bit to get the proper clearance over the disc brake. Perhaps provide a link with every rear rack’s instructions.
Does this work for motorcycle clutch cables?
Where can I get those tool?
Or just throw in bin.
very useful!
Simple, informative and so useful! All steps clearly shown and explained, Thank you!

Brilliant, just as needed thanks.
*My folding bike squeaks and creaks from the stem so I disassemble everything, clean, grease and put back together. I go for a ride and the bike is quiet at 1st then 5 minutes later the creaking sound is back. Tonight I tried red locktite on the stem bolt then tightened it down super snug so I'm going to give this a shot and see what happens.*
Did the tightening help with the annoying sound?
@@marcomongke3116 *Turned out to be the bottom headset bearing on mine. Greased that thing good and no more annoying squeaks.*
@@bigtexas7580 tnks. I was just about to diagnose my new folding bike noises, i will try lubes and tightening,.. didnt realize new bikes need it.
@@marcomongke3116 *They usually apply weak amounts of grease from the factory so you want to pack those bearings full of quality synthetic grease and spray all of the pivot points with silicone lubricant. Mine hasn't squeaked since I greased everything 2 weeks ago and I been riding the crap out of this bike whuch is rated for 230 lbs max. I weigh 230 and I recently installed a passenger seat on the rear rack to be able to ride my 78 lb 6 year old daughter to the park and even with our combined weight of over 300 lbs still no squeaking. Only noise I hear now is from the chain while pedaling.*
Thanks for this I was adjusting everything else and this was exactly what I didn’t know.
You have literally saved me a lot of stress trying to sort out my Front brakes. Absolutely brilliant Video 👍
What size is the wrench for the stationary pad adjustment?
@Bike Friday what bike is this going on? (I would just like to know any bike which accepts an IGH (horizontal dropouts with 135mm spacing), and also internal Di2! Thanks!
Make your videos without someone talking in the background.
I own a Bike Friday and have watched a number of there short videos here on UA-cam. While the information is always good, the “production values” are poor. Some are better than others, and I’d rather have them spending their time making fantastic bikes. Please, use a better microphone, or ask others to stay away while recording.
Thanks for this! The barrel adjuster was on the others side of my travel agent when i got this... Makes sense that you can move it to the other side. Haha 🤪
Where to order the travel agent sir?

Thank you so much! This video was a lifesaver.
Very simple and well explain, No bLah BLaH bLaH...
Thanks for the video.. Please let me know the spec of the headset. I would like to switch the current one with threadless headset from Chris King, but I am not sure which one to pick. Thanks.
What about the rear wheel? Thanks...
You man are 'the hero we need but we don't deserve'... i owned a dahon speed pro tt for a couple years back around 2011 and always struggled so much to get in the right hub gear... sold the bike (because i was moving to another country, anyway) but found this much needed clip only after i sold it and to this day i wonder, if i'd keep the bike then. At least i would have enjoyed more back then. Now i'm glad i've found this again because there are good deals out there. Might really consider such bikes again :) Legend!!
Thanks for the video. This was super helpful 👍
Would this work on a Dahon folding?
