The Ritual was composed during the 2020 covid-19 lockdown, inspired by the recitation of a monk who reads the Heart Sutra. In addition, the geomungo tone was added to the gayageum, replicated with hints from the wooden gong 'Moktak' sound at the beginning and the end. composed & performed by Hwayoung Shon

옛 선조들이 어려움이 닥칠 때 음악과 무용을 곁들여 제사와 의식을 치른 것처럼 가야금으로 2020년에 하는 'RITUAL' 입니다. 음악은 스님의 목탁소리를, 호랑이를 닮은 전통 무율 타악기 '어'의 소리처럼 표현하며 조용한 의식을 시작합니다. 의식이 무르익을 때면 거문고의 타음을 연상하는 리듬과 멜로디가 분위기를 고조시키고 마치 북을 연상케하는 빠른 리듬으로 의식의 끝을 향해 달려갑니다. 이 의식의 끝은 스님의 반야심경의 독송과 같은 차분한 멜로디로 모든 것을 깨끗이 정화하듯 마무리를 지으며, 첫 시작과 같은 목탁리듬을 닮은 '어'가 곡을 완성합니다. Always loved hearing Gayageum, now I could hear even better with this piece, all the fine sounds. Wish I could have been there 'live' to feel them even more directly.
