The Five Practices for Thriving Teams: A Deep Dive into The Collaborative Way — Lloyd Fickett
This episode is brought to you by Brad's forthcoming book, Start With Values (startwithvalues.com/). To support this show, we'd love it if you could order your copy. If you do, please email hello@bradleyhook.com, and we'll send you a thank-you gift.
In this episode of The Brad Hook Podcast, we are joined by Lloyd Fickett, the founder of The Collaborative Way (collaborativeway.com/). Lloyd shares his wisdom on building extraordinary teams through collaboration, respect, and a small set of practices that enhance how people work together. This conversation dives deep into the core principles of The Collaborative Way, a methodology that has been transforming workplaces for over 30 years, making them more productive and fulfilling.
Lloyd also discusses the importance of listening generously, speaking straight, being for each other, honoring commitments, and appreciation as foundational practices to success in both business and personal life. Tune in to learn how these practices not only improve company culture but also spill into people’s lives outside the workplace.
0:00 - 0:21 | Introduction: Lloyd Fickett discusses the power of collaboration and how treating people with dignity and respect leads to extraordinary teamwork.
0:45 - 1:38 | What is The Collaborative Way? Lloyd introduces the core framework for working together, emphasizing that different backgrounds lead to varied expectations.
2:18 - 5:18 | Silicon Wafers and a Breakthrough: Lloyd shares a story about working with a leading tech company in the 1980s, a pivotal moment that laid the groundwork for The Collaborative Way.
5:54 - 6:52 | The Five Practices of The Collaborative Way: Lloyd outlines the key practices-listening generously, speaking straight, being for each other, honoring commitments, and practicing appreciation.
7:50 - 9:14 | The Secret Sauce: Lloyd explains why acknowledgment and appreciation are critical to extraordinary teamwork.
9:42 - 11:39 | Culture vs. Band-Aid Solutions: Brad and Lloyd discuss how most companies attempt to fix cultural issues with perks rather than addressing the real need for collaborative frameworks.
11:52 - 13:55 | Writing the Book: Lloyd shares the story of co-authoring The Collaborative Way with his son and how the book has reached audiences globally.
14:36 - 17:20 | Implementing the Practices: Lloyd shares examples of companies that have successfully implemented The Collaborative Way, highlighting the power of collaboration in driving success.
18:02 - 19:44 | The Future of Work: Lloyd talks about how younger generations are no longer willing to work in environments that lack respect and collaboration, pushing organizations to evolve.
19:51 - 22:29 | The Role of Purpose in Work: Brad and Lloyd explore how purpose and identity are becoming interwoven in work life, especially for younger generations.
23:23 - 27:13 | Deep Dive into the Five Practices: Lloyd breaks down each of the five practices in detail, providing insights on how to effectively apply them in work and life.
27:54 - 32:12 | Personal Life: Lloyd shares how The Collaborative Way enriched his personal relationships and how it can transform families.
32:33 - 35:35 | Collaborative Hiring: Brad and Lloyd discuss whether collaborative skills should be prioritized in hiring or if companies can teach collaboration through the framework.
35:47 - 37:55 | Zen and Practice: Lloyd delves into how Zen meditation has helped deepen his practice of The Collaborative Way and how it strengthens his ability to stay centered.
38:26 - 42:26 | Meditation as a Tool: Lloyd explains how meditation helps cultivate the space between stimulus and response, allowing for more thoughtful reactions.
42:40 - 43:12 | Practice and Values: Lloyd draws parallels between Viktor Frankl’s teachings and The Collaborative Way’s practices.
43:45 - 46:19 | Inspiration: Lloyd shares what inspires him most-people who express love, commitment, and the courage to step outside of their automatic reactions.
46:54 - 47:30 | Final Thoughts: Lloyd encourages listeners to practice listening generously and discover the miracles that can happen when they do.
Notable Quotes:
“To be extraordinary as a team, it’s not enough that individuals are extraordinary. It’s about how we work together.”
“We’re not just listening generously for the sake of it, we’re listening generously to move forward, accomplish our mission, our vision, our objectives.”
“It’s not just about what we achieve, but how we achieve it.”

I really appreciate how JT is able to provide succinct explanations to a large body of philosophical works. He would be an enormous assed to BBC Radio 4's 'Today program. I cannot think of anyone better to provide the 5 minute 'Thought for the Day' slot. I believe it would attract a younger audience.

Masterful conversation! Sandy, I appreciate your synthesis of the topic. Our societies' have yet to learn how to cater to and educate non neuro-typical children. In my view, we abuse neuro-diverse children in school, and (later) wonder why many of them fall into the criminal justice system in adulthood.
