Aurora Borealis on New Year’s Day
A stunning display o’ da ‘mirrie dancers’ seen over Lerwick in Shetland on New Year’s Day. This is filmed in realtime and you can see the movement in the aurora looking up into the centre of it overhead. The footage is taken from latitude 60.15N and when filming I was looking to the SE, Southern sky and overhead, showing, that it is a pretty strong display. The brightness of the aurora is pretty close to what was seen with the naked eye with perhaps a little more colour but hues of pink or red could be seen with the naked eye. We are just in the edge of the Lerwick so there is some light pollution from the town so out in the Shetland countryside the aurora would have been brighter to the naked eye. Hopefully we will get some more nice aurora over the next few months.
Filmed on Canon R6, EF24mm f1.4, iso 16000 and 25fps.
The music is an old Shetland melody called ‘Sigurd o’ Gord’s Spring’ played by Fiddlers’ Bid, a band I am a member of. We recorded it on the album ‘All Dressed in Yellow’. If you have heard the album check it out on all streaming platforms.
If you like the content on this UA-cam channel give me the video a like or subscribe. Aiming for some more music content in 2025. Also get some more sailing footage in the summer, that seems to be popular. All the best for 2025, Happy New Year!!🎻 #auroraborealis #lerwick #realtime #shetland #newyear2025

Beautiful footage, and I keent da tune, as it's a favourite of mine.
Thanks @helenjes
that would be so extraordinary to witness. The music is great with it
The Humpbacks have become fairly regular visitors to Shetland waters in November and early December on their migration. This was a particularly memorable day of whale watching. Glad you liked the music, thanks.🐋
Great tunes! The second in particular... I need to learn it but it's gonna take a bit of working out.
Thanks @rogerpeppe glad you enjoyed the tunes🎻😊
excellent Maurice
Thanks @richardashbee1477 Happy New Year!✨
I absolutely love this music! As someone of Scots heritage via my maternal Grandfather, it's in my DNA. I'm listening on Christmas Eve. Thank you for sharing your talent with those of us "across the pond". Merry Christmas!
All the best to you across the pond! Merry Christmas🎄🎻✨
Thanks Maurice, wonderful to watch from snowy upstate NY!
Nice to hear the music it is being enjoyed in NY State Robyn. Wishing you all the best for Christmas and the New Year. We are away out for more tunes tonight 🎻✨❄️
Really enjoyed that. Great craic. Go raibh maith agat
Glad you enjoyed the music @naomhfermin All the best to you.🎻😊
The title to this video is classic Shetland understatement. It nearly makes me greet ta think I missed yun ! So blyde du pat dis online.
We shall surely try da Peerie Christmas Spree again another year. 👍🏻 It really was a splendid weekend of music and much hilarity.🎻
Thank you! I've been reading about it, but no other source gave such a good idea of how it ran and what it looked like close up. This put the wall into more context with the landscape, too. The music was a great addition!
I get such a gluff in small sea caves, but this is really splendid! Worth the anxiety!
Wow, an amazing sight! What's da name of dis fiddle tune being played?
Hi, it wis certainly a memorable day up around Tangwick. The fiddle tune is one of me ain called ‘Haal in da Drogue and Gie da Boys a Biskut’. 🎻 (Fiddle is tuned AEAE)
@ Ah, super! Cracking tunes!
That is sailing!!! Beautiful! Some technical questions though. How high into the wind can one sail? And during tacking, is the sail lowered to bring the yard to the other side of the mast?
Well, you’ll not point as high as a fore and aft type rig but probably higher than you would think. With the peaked sail and bowline attached to give a bit of shape afore the mast, it does help her point a bit higher than a more square type sail. If you are beating and against the tide in a narrow channel you have to be pretty efficient with your tacking to make headway. In that situation the fishermen would have probably had the oars out. Here’s a link demonstrating tacking and lowering and turning of the yard. ua-cam.com/video/A32Oerky8v4/v-deo.htmlsi=Nw3PGQqCMaj62OUD You can square the sail off and she performs very well and stable downwind, as seen here with the squaring reef. ua-cam.com/video/Mr9exxXZJco/v-deo.htmlsi=LQGto_3Tjytw4web
@@MauriceHendersonShetland Ingenious. hard work though but good fun! Not for the single handed sailor! Thanks, love it!! (saw those two video's)
Really good! Would you consider making a longer video, perhaps?
Thanks @sparksagain, we will definitely look at a longer video next time we are down along the Crofthouse. 👍🏻🎻
fantastic, love this tune
Thanks @jeleth🎻
I listened twice, thanks! BTW, the lighting was great too.
Thanks @RobbsHomemadeLife the sound is fine in the old Crofthouse as well. Just a stereo mic in the room.

That one fairly gets the crowd going😄🙌🏻🎻
That’s mental !
With a bit of practice the crew get quite slick with the tacking😄

ha ce n'est pas la côte d'azur et on aurait du mal à y tremper le bout des doigts de pieds mais , diable , quel joli bateau qui fend la mer et les flots . bravo! ( et en outre , on a la musique qui va avec )
Thanks for the nice comment 🎻@patrikcalloch7953
I was screaming at the screen for one of them to tack ! So I could see how they do it. Lovely boats.
Thanks for your comment @tombristowe846 here’s a demonstration of some tacking aboard the sixareen. ua-cam.com/video/A32Oerky8v4/v-deo.htmlsi=hPaQdP9_nP9fsEeS
@@MauriceHendersonShetland Thanks very much for taking the trouble to get back to me with that. It was interesting to watch. Not for single handers ! I also watched the video of a Sixareen square reefed and running; what a sight ! Historically, have they ever been decked over?
@tombristowe846 the Sixareens were historically always fished and sailed as open boats. The Haaf fishing declined and the use of open boats, such as sixareens, for deep sea fishing towards the end of the 19th Century. The Gloup disaster of 1881 where 56 men were lost, the move to larger decked in vessels, as well as the herring boom of the early 1900s saw the Haaf fishing come to an end. Sailing drifters soon gave way to steam drifters and then the diesel engines and outboards pretty much the end of commercial and inshore sail fishing. Some Shetland boat builders continued to build craft based on the sixareen, more commonly with smaller dimensions and designed to accommodate an engine, forward shelter or wheel house and engine aboard. Also the smaller ‘Shetland model’ class boat saw the traditional craft used in sailing for leisure as well as inshore fishing, landing fish for the table. There are still some small clinker build boats working creels and some traditional boat builders in Shetland making fourareens, yoals and other traditional craft. The sixareen however, as you can see, really performs when under sail. I can recommend this book, Shetland’s Boats if you want to read more. There exist the lines of a few more of the old sixareens and hopefully someday soon we might see replicas of these built for sailing and out on the water again. shop.shetlandtimes.co.uk/products/shetlands-boats-origin-evolution-and-use?_pos=4&_sid=350a6715a&_ss=r
@@MauriceHendersonShetland Again, thank you very much for getting back to me. I was surprised, when looking up Sixareen on Wiki, to see that they were apparently originally imported from Norway in kit form, until the middle of the 19th Century. I hadn't imagined such commercial subtleties existed in those days. A diversion online into the history of trade had to be abandoned as it was threatening to turn into an all-nighter ! All the best and I hope you have a good summer's sailing.
Wow, absolutely amazing footage! Beautiful light… especially in the shots of the shore birds from across the water. The underwater film of the scarfs and the drone film of the otters is excellent and it’s wonderful to see that dimension of their world. Great footage of the otters close up too. I love that you’ve captured the feel of winter in all its guises. Experiencing Eshaness and Steness in those storms must have been really thrilling!! I look forward to seeing the Voe in the spring.
Thanks for the lovely comment, glad you enjoyed the footage and you got to visit the Voe, it was great to meet you. Stenness in that weather really is amazing to experience.
Seen it many times. From a motorcycle when attending the Dim. Also other time from a car or coach. Always wondered what it is like close up.
Fantastic stuff as always Maurice, didn't know you played the box til seeing this!
Thanks @jeleth I enjoy trying a few tunes on the single row box in the house but Fullsceilidh allows a rare stage appearance😄
Hauling the mail on the downhill run.
In spite of the fact that it is beautiful, I deeply resent it. Why not show how you tack and gibe? What you present i is beautiful but boring.
Bless you
Incredible footage!
Thanks @tizziejames9040 , a spectacular sight.
Now that’s a lovely find on the inter web thingy……. Thankyou Maurice ❤
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for your comment 👍🏻
Why can’t you just swivel it and retie the bow line?
Because it’s not really a square sail.
It is a dipping lug, in Shetland we speak about it also as a square sail. The reason being that in the older form of the sixern sail it was less peaked and more of a square sail. This one has a squaring reef in the sail that allows you to take the peak out and put the yard more square across, you also move the tack further aft. This gives a very good downwind rig, that performs well improving how the boat handles. You can see us putting in the squaring reef for the downwind leg in this clip. ua-cam.com/video/Mr9exxXZJco/v-deo.htmlsi=-MhURaqoCBhsELtB
It literally heals and restores my soul my listening and hearing this music!! 🎻♥️🎹Maurice you really know how to set the scene and feeling of the place!!
Used to love him coming into the Marlex for a tune
Jim certainly loved a good session. @richardwemyss4336
Uncle Jim certainly is a huge miss!!
Brilliant video. I talked to Tom Anderson many years ago and he sent me a copy of "Hand Me Down the Fiddle" he was obviously a lovely man even though I never met him. He also explained how the fiddle was taught in the Shetland
Thanks for your comment Marc, much appreciated. That is nice to hear about Tom Anderson sending you the book. He did so much to keep the Shetland tunes and fiddle tradition going, and it is still going strong today thanks to his foresight to start teaching the fiddle to the youngsters. That book is a good source of Shetland tunes. You have maybe seen this book by the late Dr Peter Cooke on the Shetland fiddle tradition. An interesting read.
