If you only have one dc and want to rename it skip the demoting the old etc and skip directly to the add new name and swap to primary it will work fine.

Yes this is to change the dc hostname not the domain name

Nope, it’s written into the code, we use a separate account with only the perms needed to perform MDT and a domain join.

@@theictguy_co_uk good for bulk builds - I’d set it so it asks for the password once you’ve done all of the builds so anyone can’t just do it themselves.

The bulk of our work is done during school holidays so the account is disabled during term times and or times we aren’t imaging. If the account is active all year round we require a password entering.

@@theictguy_co_uk makes sense. So the account it uses isn’t a Domain Admin, but it just has permission to **join** to the domain? I was trying to work out how to do this, but I think that particular permission is part of Domain Admins?

If you’re adding a new DC to an existing domain then yes just add the server to the existing domain and then promote. Or you can add and promote as the same time. Either is fine.

If you already have WDS and are installing MDT new you need to generate the boot image for MDT and then add it to WDS.

As long as the new dc is up and functioning it doesn’t matter which way round you do this as long as once demoted there are no lingering records in AD, sites and services or dns.

Hi J, depending on the size of the SYSVOL folder you are migrating and the amount of domain controllers in your domain the process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. You are however correct you should see folders populate under the new SYSVOL_DFSR but this process might not start for a good time into the migration process while your DC’s are performing other migration tasks. Hi @@theictguy_co_uk I managed to kick off the step 1 prepared state, which has all gone well all DC are now consistent. But I'm still not seeing the staging folder which is present in the old SYSVOL folder in the SYSVOL_DFSR folder. Do you know whether all the folders in the old SYSVOL folder i.e. Staging/policy's/logon scripts etc should be replicated or should it only be the Policy's and logon scripts?

Hi, I would have to replicate to be 100%, but from memory, yes you should see all the folders from the old SYSVOL folder in the new SYSVOL_DFSR folder. Are the dc’s physical or virtual?

I'm not sure why it's not showing all the folders in the new SYSVOL_DFSR and the KB article which I'm following from Microsoft doesn't specify what folder should be found in the DFSR. Not sure whether to proceed to redirect state now and see how it goes, failing that I can roll back to 0

Nevermind! Give it 15 minutes or so, and they all will be reflected to the new name.

@@theictguy_co_uk migrating from server 2008 to server 2012, it was just a test and one of my technicians tested with the real vm, instead with the backup copy.. and there I was 7 hours figuring everything out!
