Distinction and Hierarchy: Chapter 2 of Ideas Have Consequences, by Richard M. Weaver
Переглядів 1189 годин тому
"No society can rightly offer less than equality before the law; but there can be no equality of condition between youth and age or between the sexes; there cannot be equality even between friends. The rule is that each shall act where he is strong; the assignment of identical roles produces first confusion and then alienation, as we have increasing opportunity to observe."
The Unsentimental Sentiment: Chapter 1 of Ideas Have Consequences, by Richard M. Weaver

"If the disposition is wrong, reason increases maleficence; if it is right, reason orders and furthers the good. We have no authority to argue anything of a social or political nature unless we have shown by our primary volition that we approve some aspects of the existing world."
The Plain Folk and their Role in Southern History, by Frank L. Owsley

"Most travelers and critics who wrote about the South during the late antebellum period were of the opinion that the white inhabitants of the South generally fell into two categories, namely, the slaveholders and the 'poor whites.' [...] Southern historians have, with few exceptions up until this time, strongly maintained that [they] were not divided into [these] simple categories."

    I’m sure not one “tolerably intelligent” man listening fell for this. It would not convince me to leave “the land of [my] nativity.” It certainly shows that Lincoln’s feet were made of clay, so to speak, and indicates the fallibility of his logic in his desperate groping about to end the war. Interesting historical read. I wish we could know who was sitting in the audience. Got anything on that, Bagby?

    Thank you. This leaves me with the question .... why is he asking permission? Why doesn't he just act? Why is he trying to explain something that he believes they cannot understand? Why does he just not act. It's the same today, and the shoe is on the wrong foot because command means to act, not to ask permission. And flowing backwards there is something amiss further back in time. Perhaps this address is to a different audience than that stated?

    Bagby, do you know of any papers that delve into and deconstruct the schizophrenic tendencies of hierarchy amongst republican/democratic (in the classic sense) peoples? I noticed a trend that avowed monarchists, believers in autocracy, etc. who believe in an open and honest hierarchy are derided by republicans/democrats even thought the latter, through their very actions and associations believe and engage in hierarchies, and that these hierarchies are by necessity of their contradiction, veiled/dishonest.

    3:20 - this sounds eerily familiar to the mythos that farming and produce jobs can't be filled by natural citizens because of a disdain for this kind of manual labor, and as such migrant labor must be imported to fill these kinds of positions. Sounds alot like a rich man's game to debase the working ethic of regular people and supplant the natural labor force for cheaper alternatives.

      Bingo. They have to continually import people who have nothing so they can pay them next to nothing. 2nd and 3rd generation Mexican Americans won’t work for nothing either. They get their diplomas and degrees and move on. Cesar Chavez spoke about this phenomenon. Now there is a special class of agricultural immigration cards that allow people to come here legally but only temporarily. It de facto makes them slaves to their sponsoring overseer farm and even more so if they overstay the card.

    I have some disregard for types which think all which is good can be arrived at through reason, or is self-evident. Coldness, when in the way of good sentiment and good will, should be avoided. These types (a cloud of them around objectivism and rationalism) eschew faith as irrational and thus not conducive to human flourishing, when in truth faith in Christ is the font of much good will, and thus good action, and thus happiness in society.

But, I find that they still exist, and their Puritan/Protestant predispositions to religiosity is directed towards socio-economic ends. I had such an associate in high school. In all things of materialism he was quite brilliant, descended from Swedes, but his spiritual understanding of man was woefully naive, such to the extent that he was an unabashed anti-theist and Communist. But compared to the majority of folk in the area we grew up in, his kind were an extremely small minority. Most people were either crackers or beans, and very often the two overlapped more than urban intellectuals would like to admit, lest it would ruin their political machinations/narratives. No, it would seem, there are no more gentlemen, just cloaked beasts waiting for the time to take off their camouflage and savage their opposition. I have no doubts in my mind that my once-associate has connections to the black block, and would use all of his intellectual gifts to destroy people such as you and I. A shame, really, since I know exactly where his family lives (he has no family of his own) and his father seemed like a good man, if not, a tad bit too materialistic (can hardly blame him though, since his father was an engineer in an earlier era working for a legacy corporation in the aerospace industry, where materialist ontology is required for living and breathing).

    Thank you Mr Bagby I appreciate your time and generosity. You carry many small particulars and important remembrances that precipitate clarity. Some of my own thoughts: - during the period of slavery in the South the psyches of white and black had already begun to integrate. - Lincoln's emancipation was "keeping up with the Joneses" in Europe, but which actually represented a cooling of the European spirit. - statements of "anticipation" of violence may in fact be either an actual hope of violence, or incitement, or a projection by people who do not feel they have the courage to act; because they no longer live like Caesar. - North/South = Town/Country = Mind/Body - It takes a very long time to understand other people ... mostly there is no understanding and instead a false frenetic activity i.e. Progress. - America is not a country that has reached fusion, it is very different from Europe. - Hamiliton's ideas were correct - often what is correct is left to the very end which says something about human psychology - it is correct because anything else means more or less losing everything - each people represents a unique tree that needs preservation and boundaries. - In the case of America with its expansive land, it hard to act as a group. Therefore importing European culture should have been actualized at a time when the population was European. - the only thing that counts is the Prime Symbol (Spengler) ... if it is aloft all things unfold, if it is lost then only entropy unfolds ... but this relies on the fusion or integrity of the kernel.

    Was repatriation/colonization always a pipe dream? It seems like before abolition became a radical activist concern, American statesmen favored the eventuall repatriation of the black slave population, but gradually this became less and less considered, especially considering the eventual fate of Liberia. The British did not settle wild lands with dependent serfs but with their outlaws and dissidents. The serfs could be suppressed or appeased at home, but the troublemakers could not.

    • @georgebagby9058
      @georgebagby9058 Місяць тому

      Lincoln never lost his interest in colonization, and patronized several schemes with public money for the purpose. Lincoln did not think many more freemen would voluntarily go to Liberia, and he was right, so he focused on schemes to resettle in the Republic of Haiti and Central America. Fleming wrote an essay concerning this that is collected in Southern Concerns. The Grant Administration came within one vote of the purchase of Santo Domingo for the purpose of colonization.

    Hello. I wanted to ask you some historical things : I was thinking that after the American emancipation it must have been a big shock for Europeans to suddenly live in a society that did not look like Europe .... and that they must have reacted strongly to it. That is the first thing. The second is I don't know much about history but what was the actual reason for that emancipation ? It seems quite a strange thing to do ? Was it done by utopians, by protestants - people wishing to prove a point ? Was it done in order to destroy somebody ? Or for commerce reasons ? Was there a discussion of giving the former slaves their own land ? If you have any recommended sources I would be grateful.
