Hello cousin, thanks for the history lesson! Believe it or not the re-enactment portrayed in the series “Outlander” was pretty spot-on!! I know you’ve said you didn’t like the series, but I’ve learned a lot about Scottish history by watching it. BTW. Love the accent and Albannach!! ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🎶

I had several ancestors who died in that battle and others as Jacobites. Thanks for the history lesson!!!

Why didn’t they use these grounds in their favor and lure the redcoats into the bogs.

Three sites were scouted in the 48 hours leading up to the battle. The first was at Dalcross Castle, which John Sullivan, the Irish adjutant and quartermaster general, rejected, because the distance across the ravine would have been too small to protect the Jacobite army from British musket fire from the other side. The second was on the south side of the Nairn, chosen by Lord George Murray. This was poor ground, did not protect the road to Inverness and was vulnerable to British mortar fire from the other side of the river. It is clear that this site was a prelude to retreat and the dissolution of the army, because it was not an effective battle site. The third site was about 1km east of where the battle was eventually fought, and John Sullivan drew up the army there on 15 April. It was on higher and less boggy ground than the final battlefield, and both wings of the army could see each other, which they could not in the next day’s sleet and rain. No one ‘chose’ the site of the battle on Drummossie Moor as a preference: it was the line closest to headquarters at Culloden House which could defend the road to Inverness. Many of those soldiers who were asleep after the failed night attack on the 15th had retreated to the grounds of Culloden House, and there was little time to form them up as the British Army approached on the morning of the battle.

My name is Anthony Wetherington. supposedly as thus I heard we were from Northumberland and supported Prince Charles.. the story has it we had ancestors on the battle field of Culloden too.. and that one of these men, lost a leg and as the Brits came down on him he was still welding his sword...I guess things go as they go..some of my ancestors were banished to the new world for this war, and here I set on the other side of the pond in North Carolina.. totally amazed at the twists and turns of history.. if seems that if the Jacobites had won, things would have been different here in a big way..

When at Culloden, standing in front of the Clan Fraser stone, I was thinking outloud, "Why would the Scots have fought here....a bog with terrible land to run through, with cannon on the hill pointed at them, with no sleep, no food...knowing they would probably die.....Why????" A beautiful Scotsman with gray hair and a beautiful kilt stood behind me and said, "Lassie, they dinna said we were intellegent, they said we were loyal." I guess he was correct. :( Beautifully done, Jamesie!
