Baker Makes It
United States

I make things, fix things, and break things. My goal is to show you that the process of making is just as rewarding as the finished product! We live in a culture where fewer and fewer people are willing to get their hands dirty and create something...I aim to change that! Let's break the stigma that working with your hands is lesser, and instead promote the benefits of a hard day of work. Let's build something together!

Reinstalling the Body to the Frame on my Vintage Camper: 1971 Holiday Rambler Reno Part 16
Nice set up, I’m curious about the air intake being that close to the fuel tank vent.
I think it will be ok. When I accidentally overflowed the tank and it dumped out the vent, some got on the intake and I’ve run it for a couple days with no adverse affects. Since it’s just combustion air, it shouldn’t make it into the cabin 🤞🏻
That turned out nice! I wanted to do the same in mine, but opted for the new Suburban NT-16seq furnace. It sure would be nice though to have that heated air be dry like the diesel heaters, that propane burning furnace throws some serious moisture. Can't wait to see the interior come together!
Time will tell! Not wild about needing another kind of fuel but so far it’s running well. Insulation goes in tomorrow!
No clamps ?
Yeah, that was a mistake! Had a couple of them almost fall out on me and I had to go back and put the inside frames back on to hold them down
Looks great! It's scary cutting in all those holes on a fresh roof! I kinda wish I went with a diesel heater. I've got one in the bus and it throws a lot drier air. The new Suburban propane furnace in my 71 Vacationer definitely produces a ton of moisture when running. The cons of the diesel heater are, you need to find a spot for the diesel tank that is easily accessible, and the ticking from the fuel pump can be annoying.
Yeah I debated back and forth but the moisture some bad experiences I’ve had wihh the propane in sub-freezing temps talked me out of propane. For the diesel heater, I mounted the pump outside and you almost can’t hear it once the fan gets going. Tank was definitely a weird one too, but that will be in the next video 🙂
Why not use butyl tape under solar brackets?
I used Dicor Self Leveling under my solar brackets and all around them on my bus. So far so good 6 years later.
Great question, and I debated back and forth for a bit. Ultimately, it came down to it being easier to line everything back up to install the second time. I was super nervous about missing rafters! We’ll see how it holds up! Did a trailer at work and no drips after a year 🤞🏻
Can you still lock/unlock the gate with the key?
Yep! Just disables the electric function. I forgot that for a minute when filming and thought I locked it shut 😭
Thank you well explain best video 👍
You’re welcome! I appreciate the feedback 🙂
Nice video. Just did mine in about 30 minutes by myself. Super easy install. The video showed me exactly what was needed before starting. Thanks!
Glad to hear it! Definitely a nice easy DIY.
Nice job on the install.
Thanks 👍
It’s coming along nicely! Sounds like maybe another year or so before ya’all can take it for a spin!
I have an aggressive goal of this Summer…we’ll see!
Looking good!
Thank you sir!
Nice. Always feels good to complete some finishing touches.
It sure does!
Thank you so much
Hey bud I have a holiday rambler where is the fresh water drain I can’t for the love of me find it
I’ve ripped out all the original plumbing at this point but I’m pretty sure it was in a sliding access panel on the belly pan. There may have been more than one if I’m remembering right
Are you saying that the right side of the camper has left hand threads ? ? That is probably why my buddy could not get the wheels off that side but my storage trailer the threads are all right hand threads .
That’s correct! It’s super weird and not a thing anymore. Mine are actually stamped with “L” or “R” for which direction the threads are
I just got 2 Holiday ramblers and neither one of mine have a AC unit in them ! And Iam getting ready to do the same thing to mine I don’t know who designed this one that I stay in but they took all the space in here !!! I will put the hole kitchen and bathroom to the right of the entrance door I already figure the best way to put all of it and then I’ll have 19 feet to make a dining room and a10 foot bedroom i the back because I can’t live in a 6foot bedroom !!!! I can’t even get my stereo in there and move around !! My name is Ed and I have basically the same issues that you’re except I had to get 2of them because of all the stuff that I own!! But I’ve been working on cars and houses for 49 years and remodeling houses for 42 years now and there’s nothing that I can’t do to eather one !!!! Maybe send me a text and maybe we can help each other out ??? Iam in Maryland … good luck with your project !!!!!
I’ve heard that on some, there is a 120V wire in one of the roof vents so you can swap it for an AC, but I don’t know how common that is. I’m in the Holiday Ramblers Group on Facebook - feel free to message me there! Good luck with your projects 🙂
Looks great! I am still trying to get mine finished!
It’s crazy how much time it takes!
Just a tid bit of useless info... you may want to caulk anything that you attach to the outside of the camper, in my experience I always ended up with leaks at the screw holes 🤔
Nice job on the oil change. I did see a major mistake you made though. The oil filter housing is full of oil, until you open it. This takes the pressure off the filter and releases the oil to flow down into the oil pan. If you replaced the drain plug before you loosened the filter, all of the old oil in that housing is still in your motor. Next time, drain your pan. After it stops draining, and without replacing the plug, open the oil filter cap and look at how much more oil drains out of the pan. If you will oil all the o-rings on the filter and attach it to the cap, it will reinstall much easier also. I would also start the truck and fill the oil filter housing back up before checking the level. Both of mine have always taken 6 qts even, and never any in between changes.
Good tips! I do oil the o-rings but forgot to mention it in this video 🙂
Wow thanks.
Baker, what do you do with the old oil and filter? Great video man!
Thanks dude! My local county has a recycling center but auto parts stores usually will take it too.
I've watched a couple of videos on rotating the tires on a GM pickup. Yours is by far the most straightforward approach. Thanks for the video
Appreciate you saying that!
What size crush washer do u use
The ones I had were from a Honda civic originally but they are a 14mm ID.
Excellent narrative and respect for your technical skills.
Thank you sir!
Back in the mid 80's I bought a mint 1971 32' Holiday Rambler from the original owner. Beautiful in brand new shape! Dual entry doors w/a small queen in back bedroom. Was in my 20's, single and I used it as a Summer Seasonal mid 80's thru mid 90's at York Beach, Maine. Had a lot of fun and great memories w/my Holiday Rambler. Great, great time!
That’s awesome! We are looking forward to lots of memories in ours.
Love what you have done so far. Looking forward to the next steps.
Thanks man!
Nice job.
Hi Zach, do you happen to still have the 4th metal Holiday Rambler emblem that you bought? I am searching for one to use as a pattern to creat a mould. Thanks
Sorry, I don’t. I sold it to another person restoring a Holiday Rambler. They do pop up on EBay periodically if you keep an eye out.
Looks great, when you get it wired up and turn the lights on at dusk it will bring a big smile to your face😁. Just a heads up I noticed that the LEDs don't last but a few years☹️ and I ended up soldering 2 pin plugs on mine to expedite changing them out a little bit quicker...
Good job!
Thanks!
Super cool! I doubt the camera does it justice. The porch light is a great touch!
So nice to see it come together!
Wasn’t sure how the filler was gonna look but it turned out very nice! Can’t even see it. I’m glad you were able to find the oversized cover. The whole project looks great!
I was nervous too!
My wife brought her car in for a oil change at a jiffy lube or some damn place and they forgot to put oil back in the car it ended up stalling and then smoking and then it wouldn’t run anymore we had to tow it away
I’ve heard too many of those stories…that’s why I do my own!
So sweet. We polished one, but I may paint my personal one after seeing this!
I wanted to polish it, but that’s quite the commitment 🤣
Did GM really put a plastic filter housing on a diesel truck? Nice video and a nice truck.
Thanks! They sure did, same for the fuel filter housing.
They look great. Nice job cleaning them and painting them.
Thank you! Felt great to see the before/after.
30 more like 89.00
Looks great, love the color
Thanks!
Can you please tell me what stripper you are using? I tried the orange stuff, citri stripper it was wrapped with plastic for 24 hours twice. It did not come off very easily not like yours did and took way too long.
Yeah I didn’t have any luck with those since mine had multiple layers. Only thing that worked for me was aircraft stripper, and lots of it. Probably used 4 gallons all said and done. Also get yourself a plastic scraper with replaceable plastic blades!
@@bakermakesit yes, I have one of those.
Enjoying your project, however your 71 rambler is a reimagining of the unit and in reality will only be a surface deep facsimile. Keep up the good work. Regards from across the Atlantic.
Thanks for following along! It definitely will be a departure from the original in many ways 😀
Great job on the "Camper Bling". That is hard painting those letters up in the air on the vertical.
Thanks Dwight!
I didn't realize that HR had aluminum emblems back in the day... you knocked it out of the park it looks great.👍 Can't wait to see what you do with that tankless hot water heater, one of the best upgrades I've made to mine. I ran pex lines 5 years ago and no issues thus far, knock on wood. Made it easy replacing all the old stuff easy.
Great job! Looks good!
Thank you!
Coming along nicely! The emblems really do make it pop.
I’ve been looking forward to this part for a long time 😀
It seems the gold that I received is not as gold as yours but I know it is just a picture. The date on the can says 9/23. Mine just seems so dark. Sorry to bother you. I didn’t know if you added something to it.
Sorry to hear that. Colors can definitely look different in different lights. I reduced mine as per the directions, but didn’t change anything else.
Sorry, to text you but I need to know the color of gold. You said gold metallic and they sent me the wrong color. We sprayed it on and I hate this color. Thanks, Cindy
Hey Cindy, the link to the paint I used is in the video description. It’s called Champagne Gold Metallic from TCP Global
How much silver paint did you buy? Thanks!
I bought 2 gallons of base coat, which turns into 3 gallons once it’s mixed. I used about 2/3 of that but if I had sprayed a third coat (which I should have) it would have been the perfect amount
I am changing oil tomorrow on my Tucson 2019. First time by myself. Your video is huge help and I got enough confidence to do it on my own. Thanks a ton.
You got this!
How did you go @pralay2u? Im planning to do mine for the first time as well
I hate how this engine sounds when idling
Beautiful! Awesome job
Thanks!
