Hey all, we're two grad students looking for any excuse to get aquatic - 10/10 prefer to be submerged at all times. We have spent over a decade studying the marine ecology of the West Coast (best coast) and are stoked to share some of this knowledge with you. Wave specializes in rockfish ecology and fisheries management while Alexander focuses on primary producers and light.

If you rent/move a small refrigerator/microwave into a UCSC room, you will likely need one 9 or 10 foot 14AWG (15 amp) appliance cord and one 9 foot or 10 foot outdoor 14AWG (15 amp) extension cord. The rental companies do not provide them. The local ACE hardware in Santa Cruz ran out of the 9 foot appliance cords the first week. Parents, buy them and bring with you. You cannot use two appliance cords in the same outlet because they usually have a perpendicular plug end that interferes with the other outlet. One plug can be perpendicular (appliance) while the other is a straight plug (outdoor extension) or both can be straight plugs. Lower than 15 amp cords are not acceptable.

Hey! Yeah for sure there’s a lot of organizations that you can join that are pre-med oriented. I’ve heard they provide help with like choosing classes, the mcat and basically prepare you to apply for medical school :)

Do you happen to know what research opportunities are like at UCSC compared to the other UCs? I remember just looking at UCSC's website and being so impressed by all of the opportunities and labs that they were doing and how undergrads could participate but I wasn't really able to find anything similar explaining opportunities so in-depth on my other top UCs website (Davis and SB).
There's a lot(especially for biological sciences), I'm planning to make a video about it soon! :) I would look at the professors within the department that you want to major in here to see specifically, because most professors here are doing their own research and have labs you can get involved with

Hiii! I really enjoyed the video, thanks for all the information. I don't even know if one day I'll be able to go there but I dream of it. I am from Colombia, South America and well it is pretty hard to find financial aid, I want to go to do the master of biological sciences in ecology and evolutionary biology and I really feel close to it by watching this videos, lol so dumb. You may not have any experience or know about this, but how would you compare UCSC and UCSB? And I never heard of parking after 5 pm is there anywhere where I can find more info on that?
I don't know a ton about UCSB but I'll do my best lol I was considering UCSB as well for my undergrad, I applied for aquatic bio there bc that's the closest they have to marine bio (what I study at UCSC). Both schools are great for those majors and bio in general, since UCSC is really close to the ocean (specifically the ecology department) there's a lot of good field work/research opportunities for those majors and would assume the same of UCSB. (I don't really know much about other programs at UCSB but I assume since it's a UC there's a good emphasis on research and internships etc). The main reason I went with SC is bc of the reputation of SB as more of a party school (obviously i don't go there so this was just what I heard) but honestly i feel like that's just what you make of it. I would look into the majors/departments at both schools and use that to make a decision if it's between them-I'm highly considering SB for grad school so I honestly really like both. And for the parking the West & East Remote lots are free after 5pm everyday, taps.ucsc.edu/parking/park-for-free.html

how big are your classes? do you have super impacted lectures?
My intro classes my first year were the biggest, gen chem 1a was around 500, but my more specific major classes are 20-50 and most of my classes now, even if they're more general, are around 100-200 people.

I notice that you’re wearing a SEA CAMP shirt. Is that a program from Santa Cruz? I got accepted to UCSC, but I don’t know that much about the marine bio program there. What do you think about your school’s marine bio program? I’m choosing between UCSB and UCSC.
Haha no, SEA CAMP is a summer program in San Diego. I really like UCSC's marine bio program but UCSB's is great too. I've been able to get a lot of research experience at UCSC (I started working in a marine bio lab my second year and am currently working on my senior thesis/project). Our marine bio program has a large focus on ecology and behavior, although you can definitely tie it to whatever interests you (I'm more focused on climate change impacts to marine communities). We also have a really good SCUBA program which is helpful for research in marine bio. I would look at the professors at both schools and see which one's research appeals to you more. :)

It is hard to get completely off campus and enjoy what Santa Cruz has to offer. Please try to make it down to Steamers Lane, Natural Bridges and 41st if u can.
Are the freshman required to live on campus?
No.
When my mom went, freshman were required to live on campus, but the application now let’s you choose between university housing and off campus housing. I think the most important thing to take note of is that freshman are *guaranteed* housing
No, but like Ezekiel said freshmen are guaranteed housing and finding housing in sc can be pretty difficult especially if you don't have people to live with. But I know some ppl who are from sc so they just live at home, even their first year.
