Professionals do this!?!?!? XMAS 1 WK release
Join me on an exciting adventure as I set up a bird feeding station in the heart of the woods to attract and photograph stunning wildlife! In this video, I’ll recording the professional process of capturing breathtaking bird photos using my Nikon Z8 camera and the powerful 800mm Z lens.
To ensure we don’t miss any of the action, I’ve strategically placed a Trail camera Vanbar D700 2k 20FPS and a Voopack TC07 recording in crystal-clear 4K at 30 FPS. These cameras are perfect for capturing those candid moments of birds in their natural habitat, just like the pros do in wildlife documentaries.
I’ll share tips and techniques that professionals use to capture wildlife, from selecting the best location for a bird feeding station to setting up gear for optimal results. Whether you’re a budding wildlife photographer or a seasoned pro, you’ll find valuable insights in this video.
And, of course, I couldn’t do this without my trusty companion, Dora the Explorer! My dog Dora adds a fun twist to our wildlife adventure, and she’s always up for exploring new territories.

Close encounter of the Mammal kind at 1840mm 4K
As I discovered last night, they aren't able to penetrate a medium fog very well. I wasn't even able to see the glint of their eyes. These are good for a hobbyist- they don't have a very long range to be able to see the animal you're watching in detail, but I'm really enjoying them to simply monitor activities in my backyard from various animals! (We have a large cleared back yard, with additional forested acreage beyond that. )
They are OK but for the price I think you should be able to get Better ones. The biggest issue I have is the False Information they state on the website. Note that they are based on IR lights, If the light cannot pass the throught the fog they wouldn't work. maybe if you wanted longer range in the Garder you could use fixed IR lights at the bottom giving you that little more range.
I think I purchased something quite similar to these, to watch my backyard at night. They're actually quite handy for that, even if they're not great! I haven't figured out how to put it on my computer, though.
For these I take out the SD card and plug the SD card into the PC using a USB SD Card reader.
@rpcamera I think I might be having a problem with that part- well, with the cameras I purchased along with these- in that it requires a 3 or 4G network, and not 5. Is that an issue with these and plugging it into your PC? if not, I might try your suggestion for these, as well!
THE AUDIO IS CRAP HEAR EVER SHIT IN YOUR HAND A NO GO
Absolutely fantastic, I’ve not been there for years, and I was never into wildlife photography beck then either. There was no wooden walkway there last time I was there. Just wandering, was the dipper up beyond the falls. Keep up the great videos, truly inspirational
The dipper wasn't too far up the path passed the Falls. I would say about 1/2 way between the Falls and where the path pulls away for the rivers edge
The Kingfisher was up an down the whole path
@ Fantastic, thank you so much, whether time of year was this. I used to live in Pembrokeshire, now in Cheshire, but visit the area every couple of months, and that would make a great stop on the way home, thanks for getting back to me
@@alunlambert7456 this was in September, weather wasn't too bad but had been raining often during the week.
@@rpwildtravels Looked really good wags kings and dippers, are you on Facebook or instagram
Wasted my time watching this
Sorry, Please let me know what was missing from the video?
Liked the video, can i ask what part of newport that was?
River Nevern Wildfowl Conservation Area upto Newport Beach, Wales
@rpcamera ahh I see on the map its a diff newport from where I live, such a pity.
@@adragonphotography Yea, Wales has two Newport. One day I will be going to Newport Near Cardiff to check out the reserve there.
@@adragonphotography I have some videos from the Forest of Dean and Symonds Yat which isn't too far away from Cardiff Newport.
@rpcamera don't bother with the reserve, I went there last year and it was great easy access to see the small waterways that were cut back, places for squirrels to feed near the entrance shed so thought we would try again this year during summer once more. Everything was over grown, half the pathways through the middle were closed due to maintenance issues (the floating bridges had sunk) it was so difficult to see the water ways even from the main bird hide that had a colony of bees inhabiting the outside frame the water wax difficult to see because nothing was cut back, it was almost like it had been abandoned, their only concern was for a rare bee that had made a home somewhere on tne reserve. Tho there was lots and lots of pretty wild flowers there which I suposed attracted the bees in the first place lol. All I managed to photograph was a single swan. I can do better than that at park I go to that has a whole family of swans/cygnets and ducks and other birds plus squirrels. Basically it was very disappointing.
Excellent! Would love to see your camera settings for both photo and video. I’m seriously considering the 800pf. Thank you!
For video, mainly 4k 120FPS using DX mode (2.3x crop) and FX mode depending how much zoom I want. Shutter 250, Aperture 6.3, ISO Auto up to 20K. Photos would be a little tricky. I have done a First impression review of the 800mm PF and I am soon going to be working on a 2nd Review after having the lens for a while
ua-cam.com/video/XLxd7-mzOe0/v-deo.html first review
@@rpwildtravelswas wondering about the mm in the title. Now I know it is for vid. That’s a pretty big crop
@@thomastuorto9929 The way the Z8 works, If you record at 4k 120FPS, you would be able to change to DX mode which is 2.3x Crop. BUT it still records at 4K so isn't like a Photo crop. I.e. If you DX crop a photo it goes from a 45MP image to a 19MP image. You need to remember that 4K is only a 8.3MP images.
@@rpwildtravels Thanks. I still shoot the D810 & only have shot a couple very short vids in jpeg & have done no editing. Great explanation
lovely video.
great video
great video
👍 Always wondered about how useful it was to have the LensCoat protection on super teles ❌ Same goes for having the Nikon strap on ❌ Although I would recommend using a tripod and video head at that focal length to capture video ✔️
Lenscoat - I would recommend it on Stormy Weather or at the beach but it is a pain, makes it tricky to find the buttons. I now tend to use Hide Clamps with a video head and a Tripod or Monopod depending on what if I plan to sit and wait or walk around. I do need a better tripod tho... mine isn't great.
great video and nice shots nice meat you in new forest look at red deer

But still not got anything within a good distance yet.... Fingers Crossed
Hi - are you talking about RSPB Greylake (no ‘s’)? Thanks
Thank you, Corrected Title.
Baby great whites in there be carefull lol
The cranes are usually directly in front of the hide with the brats in and at las 00 meters away
At least 500 meters
@@davidcannon1148 Thank you, I assume that was at the hide I was sat in at the time. Did later find that there is another hide which is down a very long (for me) track which might be closer if they are still in view.
Yes it from the hide you were in
Great video of the birds at Avalon What settings do you use never realy ventured into the video side .
Ideally you should use 30FPS 4K or 8K, But to take advantage of the 2.3x Crop I tend to use 120FPS at 4K. I would recommend using Auto ISO in Manual setting with your Shutter at 2x of your FPS (Me at 120FPS, Shutter 250) and Aperture set for needs.
@@rpwildtravelsGreat info, thx!
Great examples shown here. Have you tried video in 4k 24fps then used digital zoom with no image quality loss?
I haven't yet no, But I will give that a try. Just finished recording a video with this lens using a 1.4TC though. but that will be a while before it is uploaded (Estimate 11 weeks).
Wonderful video! Would you please share the Z8 settings you use for the video clips you showed? Thank you!
Tend to us 4k 10bit (MOV) - 120 FPS mainly- Then I can use DX Mode to get a extra 2.3x crop still at 4k making my 800mm a 1840mm lens. I have now started using 8k sometimes with a large aperture (F8-10) at 60FPS when I don't know where something is going to pop up (i.e. Dolphine, Seal, or a bird fishing). Then I can 2x crop into the video and still have 4k results but have a much better chance of capturing the moment they break the surface.
I edit the videos in Davinci at the moment at 30 FPS but do sometimes need to slow down the 120FPS footage a little to prevent the double (shadow) frames on the wings of flying birds.
Don't really think that was a fair comparison when you were in the pre capture mode your shutter speed was 1250 or 1600 but when you were shooting in Aurora your shutter speed was 4,000. Also most people that shoot in the pre capture mode set their Fps to 120 not 30. In fact I didn't even know that you could shoot pre capture at only 30 frames per second
Well, I was in Avalon hide a few weeks ago when you were there. I was horrified by the abject rudeness of an RSPB volunteer towards you, as I think was everyone else in the hide. Lovely video.
Enjoyed that, thank you.
Thank you.
Sorry but RSPB reserves are private property so thwy have every right to refuse whomever they like. I'm sure your entitled attitude would also see you take you "assistance dog" onto beaches that are supposed to be dog free.
Anywhere that allows public access paid or not paid by law needs to allow assistance dogs onto the location under the Equality Act 2010 - Refusing access will result in fines. if you believe otherwise show me the government documentation stating that assistance dogs can be refused. Website Ref www.equalityhumanrights.com/guidance/assistance-dogs-guide-all-businesses
Shouldn't allow any dogs on nature reserves. What you have shown us is how selfish you are.
Glad you had a good day, in the end...👍
Thank you, Have a even better day the 2 days later at greylakes, Video goes up Monday.
When in a rspb hide I would not want my conversation recorded by someone making a vlog I would ask the vlogger to turn off the camera/microphone
People and kids haven’t got any respect when vlog or when you have a 600mm lens
Don't get any better with the 800mm. I don't mind kids being there and kids being a little excited about the birds they see, But these ones wasn't there for the wildlife. They needed to be at a play park. They wasn't there the next day so I was able to see some beauties and rare birds... Video Coming Monday.
@@rpwildtravels Looking forward to watching this vlog
Lovely video, well edited and great choice of music keep up the good work.

I would have politely asked them to keep the noise down a bit while you filmed
Well done!!
Enjoyed that, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it

@duffyellie Find more information in the link below. www.wuffable.com/post/owner-trained-assistance-dogs
So you were refused but went anyway? Not cool. Your dog isn't an official 'assistance dog' so why should they let you in? Anyone could say their dog is an 'assistance dog'.
She is an assistance dog, There is no Registration for Assistance Animals. OTAD is fully classed as an Assistance Dog.
@@rpwildtravels so could I just call my dog my Assistance Dog?
@@duffyellie If you have a need for a assistance dog and it has been trained to a high standard.
I am new to RP wild travels. I've watched this little dog just like everyone else. She is obviously well trained and obediant in a way most dog owners aspire to. If a dog (cat, budgie, shetland pony or whatever) causes no alarm or disturbance where is the harm?
@@shanestewart4905 Thank you, Just realized in this video I haven't shown much of Dora (dog) in this video. She has been trained to sit in her bed when we are in the hides and when the bed has been put down.
Why do you need a dog?
Medical Condition
@@rpwildtravels Not really an answer. Support dogs do tend to be for that. I just wonder what condition required one on a nature reserve.
@@bardot777 Sorry, I'm not willing to go pubic with the medical condition
Not an official assistance dog then? Are you registered disabled?
At least the dog is well trained... I've seen other entitled twerps who have just as much lack of respect for the rules but less trained dogs.
These are cross breed wild pigs, not true wild boar. Worldwide feral pigs are a scourge to both agriculture and fauna flora and to have them in the UK is just so wrong. Europe is full of Wild Boar and ask anyone there and they would think you nuts to think they are cute or necessary in the UK. We have fantastic wildlife in the UK, and loads of deer, we don't need these giant rats.
I can confirm that these are not true wild boar, They was bread for farming. I provide more information in this video ua-cam.com/video/_cLf15BN2o4/v-deo.html
Poor dog...you were a bit cruel there with her....don't take her with you next time
I believe that Dora is treated well and following proven training guides which creates no harm to the dog.
A bit cruel? Given the choice Dora would almost certainly always want to be out with her pack leader. Don't mistake that doe eyed hurt look for a human expression and remember in a wild pack situation such disobediance would be punished by a sharp nip at the very least.
This is invaluable, especially leaving the footage of the af hunting and all the trials and errors. Leave it all in, It's rare to see real world issues like this. It's also great to watch chilled non-pretentious wildlife days out.
This is exactly the Nikon's AF: ua-cam.com/video/1MIRtNz959c/v-deo.html
I'm a Canon guy, but you might convert me XD
Wowwww! What an honour to film such a beautiful creature ❤🎉
So glad you were able to find them and thank you for the mention too. Lovely video
No Problem, I try to give credit where possible.
Are you recording handheld or using a tripod?
Depends on which Bit, in this video parts are Handheld, Monopod and Tripod.
Wow! Loved seeing this! ❤️ Greetings from a Swedish youtuber! 🇸🇪
When I have the van Sweden would be one of the places I will go as I have some Friends there. In the UK we have a service BirdGuides.com which reports birds been seen in the UK. do you know if Sweden have a similar service?
I’m planning on getting r5 11…are Hong Kong savings worth it?…did you have to pay taxes when it arrived?
Most will include Import VAT (UK), If you don't mind waiting a little longer it should be fine. I would recommend SLRhut. Used them a couple of times with no issues yet.
You demonstrate a great reason NOT to get that lens coat. There are a number of lenses in the z range capable of 1000mm now. The z180-600 in DX is 900 onto which a 1.4 TC gives 1260 and a 2x gets a whopping 1800mm ! The z100-400 and z400 are also capable of 1200 in DX with a 2X
@patrickmolloy6994 yea the lens cover may be a too much hassle. It does OK with control wheel cover missing. I mainly want it as a extra protection. Might try a different cover in the future. I will be doing a proper review of the lens in the future once I feel I have got really used to its nature.
Thanks for this video. I have been using the Z 800 lens on my Z9 & Z8 for almost 2 years now and absolutely love it. I am a little surprised at your comment at around 19:35 where you say that it doesn't seem to be much better than the F-mount 200-500 lens. I traded my copy of the latter when i got the Z800 and fell the new lens is significantly faster and sharper than the older lens. I now also have the Z 180-600 and regularly go out with the 800 on one body and the 180-600 on the other using a Black Rapid two camera harness/strap system. This puts the load on thge shoulders rather than the neck and despite being a not particularly fit 75 year old, find i can carry both cameras this way for several hours.
May have been unfair with the speed of the af. It maybe because I am used to the f4 which was super fast however noisy and at 5 kg heavy for my legs. I am enjoying the 800mm and will be doing a review in the future once I have had it for a while I am please so far.
Thanks for this interesting and lovely collection of scenes - but why, oh why, use constant intrusive muzak to hide the rich soundscape of this beautiful area? You wouldn't want that lift music played while you're roaming the forest would you?
I will bare that in mind on future edits. These days i tend to reduce the music a lot more so you can hear the sounds of the location.
@@rpwildtravels Bless you. Many thanks.
Dora ❤
