Thanks for sharing your wonderful story! It's apparent the amazing relationship you have. I have multiple disabilities, some visible, some not. I am a little person, and have a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia. Even with my disability being immediately apparent, I do find that conversations about disability do not happen very often. In fact, it's mostly children that bring up my disability. At least here in America, I find that parents don't want their children to be rude, and so they often will shush the children when they innocently point out (especially toddlers and young children) my difference. "Mom, look at the little man!" I worry that shushing the children is teaching them that differences are bad. So, whenever I do hear a child say something, if I'm close enough, I will actually respond to them directly, "Yes, I am small like you!" One of my non-outwardly visible disabilities is like Ryan's; I also have Retinitis Pigmentosa, which is exhibiting symptoms similar to how he described his condition. Thank you for showing how you navigating these challenging conversations in a relationship. This gives me hope for any future relationship I might have.
