Milky Way Astrophotography Review/Comparison of Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 vs Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR

Hi everyone-this is strictly an image quality comparison of these two lenses to give a coma/sharpness comparison. They are both really great lenses and meet needs for different uses, but testing coma always pushes a lens to its limits. If you are curious about the old Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8 HSM, then check out my video of the Northern Lights which was shot with that lens. The old Tamron is very sh...
2008-2016 Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2020 Dodge Caravan Door Lock Actuator Repair Relocation Hack
Переглядів 12 тис.3 роки тому
My passenger rear sliding door lock actuator broke for the 3rd time. I hate replacing the original so I decided to relocate it to an easier to reach spot. I bought the actuator in the video for $12 on ebay. The connector was taken from a PC power supply that I had laying around. The spring over the rod required some bending and finessing in order to get the unlock/lock action to complete 100%. ...

Samyang Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 VS Sigma 20mm f/1.4 ART (Astrophotography Coma Comparison)
Переглядів 20 тис.6 років тому
Sorry about the audio I don't have a very good mic. I couldn't find a direct comparison of these two lenses so hopefully this will help some of you out. I was getting frustrated by the lack of sharpness from the Samyang and wanted to point out the benefits of the Sigma in a direct comparison.

    I've done this repair twice and it's no fun!! I just did this modification today with the kit I bought from this company. Took about an hour to do. Only works if you can manually move the door lock. If it's jammed you can't use this fix. ua-cam.com/video/xWtIe_xU160/v-deo.html

    These lenses are 11 years appart. For this reason only I find the 17-35/2.8D AFS ED-IF (what a name...) does very well, being 11 years older. Also, it offers the advantage of a wider aperture and an aperture ring (in my case as I still shoot film on mechanical Nikons). As it'd be expected, the newer is sharper, but by a bit only - and it has nano coating, 11 years of lens design evolution, is a darker lens (helps on sharpness) and VR which, on a 20 sec exposure with some wind makes a difference. It had to be sharper and I thought the difference would be greater! After seeing your review I'm pretty happy with my choice, the 17-35/2.8. It will get to my hands on a couple of days and I believe it'll be a nice addition to my photo kit. Seem all it needs is a stop close or two for great performance, which is usual on wide angles and most lenses in general. Thanks for the comparision!

    It I very sad these parts are so poorly made. I can understand wear and tear, but I had my caravan less then 2 years before having this problem. If I had known it was prone to this problem I never would have bought this make of car. Just an unnecessary expense no owner should have to do, at least not in 20 yrs or so. I have a 2012 and it seems every year has this problem Chrysler dropped the ball on generally a great car to drive. Thanks for the video.

    I’m trying to do this now, and I’m having no luck with the lock button, only unlock. It’s on the left side, and according to the wiring diagram, the unlock is tan/orange, and the lock is tan/purple, which is how I hooked it up. You said the top and second pins were lock and unlock and the bottom pin was ground in the video, but the wiring doesn’t seem to match the pins when I look at the way they’re taped together. Anyway, I tried it in all combinations and nothing will work with the lock button. I even tried all combinations directly to the battery terminals, and only the top two pins got it to open or close, the fourth pin is irrelevant. I figured connecting positive from the battery to the bottom pin and negative to the second would get it to lock but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’ve messed with this on and off for a week and am lost so I guess I’m just hoping there’s something simple I’m missing

    Hi. Big question. You might know the answer. Just got for free a 06 Town & Country. Some rust. 175k miles but lots of maintenance. My question is about sliding doors. Both actually. They open/close from key fob, from inside buttons or center control buttons but not from de door handle. At least not by themself. They do manually. Not sure what could be the problem. I googled and googled but still dont have an answer. Maybe they are not even supposed to do that! So please lmk in case you have an advice at least where to start. Thank you

      Make sure the actuator is traveling the full distance. It can’t bind up on anything. In the video I had to add a spring in order to help it out.

  • @shawnweber5400
    @shawnweber5400 2 роки тому

    Were you able to lock and unlock it manually before you relocated the actuator? I ask because on my 2011 grand caravan I can not move the manual lever at all so I'm thinking my actuator is seized up, or does it start moving freely once the power is disconnected from it?

    • @capturedbyhisdesign8656
      @capturedbyhisdesign8656 2 роки тому

      Yes I was able to lock/unlock manually. If it is seized up then you’ll need to dig in there. Have fun 😕

    I agree , stupid location for the actuator. It's be cool if it was accessible via a quick access panel. The car companies don't do this because the high failure part costs 1200-2000 to fix a door with a 50 dollar part.

    I get your frustration with the manual focus. But too bad you're comparing an out of focus capture to one that's in focus... Where is the base for the comparison then. Me personally I didn't have a lot of trouble focusing with fast lenses so it would've been nice to have a comparison between two images that are in focus....

      @@flospectives7548 maybe I am wrong :) but i own that lens myself and you can focus it by looking for bokeh fringing. out of focus to one side is severely purple, to the other side green :D not sure if that's a positive or negative :)

    • @capturedbyhisdesign8656
      @capturedbyhisdesign8656 4 роки тому

      Haha! Well for landscape astrophotography you can definitely auto-focus! Try it you'll be surprised. I live in a rural area and my D810 along with this Sigma will AF on Procyon, Sirius, or any distant light will do for landscape astro. I'll admit there have been times (not many) that AF is off and I'll manual focus. I use Betelgeuse to focus for wide field astro...it has the perfect brightness but yes you need to MF and a Bahtinov mask is a must.

  • @capturedbyhisdesign8656

    Wow the audio sucks! I'm sorry about that again. Quick post/19 month follow-up: The Sigma 20mm 1.4 is awesome and I have not looked back since ditching the Samyang. The Sigma 20mm 1.4 is still my #1 for astro followed by the Sigma 14mm 1.8. I do still enjoy the images and wider field of view out of the 14-24mm Nikkor and the zoom comes in handy. My advice is to not get to wrapped up in reviews. Just get what you can afford and make the best of it. High ISO tech has come so far that you can push the sensor with cheap lenses and get great results.The old Tamron and Sigma 17-35's can be found for cheap and aren't bad if coma doesn't make you lose sleep...

      Thank you for this review. This appears to be the lens for photogrammetry also. Still wondering the Sigma 24mm 1.4. Regarding audio: Just remember that no amount of audio gear will save you if you do not speak up. Imagine speaking to a class. Then position the mic to balance the level. Making these changes does not cost anything (unless maybe the neighbours will think you´re weird, talking to yourself). :)

    Thanks for digging into this, seems other reviews struggle to get past the coma and talk about things the Sigma actually does well. I decided to go with the Sigma to pair with my A7s, I figure as I'll mainly be looking to do shorter exposure time lapse and hyper lapse the overall sharpness, contrast and light gathering than moderate coma.

    • @capturedbyhisdesign8656
      @capturedbyhisdesign8656 5 років тому

      Glad you liked the video. I still use the Sigma for Astro and love it. Great light gathering capability-and for those that are anal about coma you can just crop to 24mm and its gone. Anyway have fun and best wishes on clear moonless nights.

    Also, not sure what you are seeing but Tony Northrup did a review on the sigma 20mm comparing it with the rokinon and criticized the sigma for coma. his photos showed worse coma with the sigma. The sigma is twice the price of the rokinon too. Dustin abbot also reviewed the sigma and was dissapointed with the coma performance.

    • @dominic-ryan
      @dominic-ryan 5 років тому

      Yeah, Dustin certainly didn't give the Sigma a great wrap. I don't know about Tony's review though, you could see in his exif readout his exposure time was 30 seconds. NPF rule for the Sigma on a 5DS R has max exposure at 8 seconds, even the classic 500 rule has the max at 25 seconds. I would think it would make it hard to give a solid evaluation of coma on a lens when exposure time is in star trail territory.

  • @scottsmith4145
    @scottsmith4145 5 років тому

    Huh? Im totally baffled. At the very end of the video you say you passed on the sigma 14mm 1.8 prime lens because the nikon 14-24 zoom lens seems wider? The nikon is an f2.8 lol. Uh hmm...ok. So you opted for a zoom lens with nearly 2 full stops LESS light over a prime thats most certainly sharper (primes are usually like that vs zooms). Ok...good luck.

      Yeah i have only heard great things about the Sigma 14mm 1.8 Art. Only beaten by the more recent Sony 14mm F1.8 GM, which is only for Sony cameras, it's still a great lens. I've got a Samyang 24mmF1.4 on the way, I plan to shoot it at F2.8 on a star tracker, i'm sure it will be sharp with no coma :)

    • @capturedbyhisdesign8656

      GRJOHN360 Actually the most common issue is decentering which this lens doesn’t have. I hate to say it but the Samyang is just not sharp wide open...I’ve tried many copies.

    •  6 років тому

      No, my copy is the same at f/1.4, and what is interesting is if you stop down to f/2.8 it is even sharper than my Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM. And what I understand is nightscape photography people are using this lens stopped down in f/2.8 or more where it really shines.

    at 4:00 in the video, I think the Sigma has more astigmatism, not coma when it's a flat line like that. But I could be wrong.

    • @sandb1867
      @sandb1867 5 років тому

      It's a combination of both, but probably more coma. The best way to test is to take a bright point source and rack focus in and out. If blur shifts 90 degrees, it's astigmatism.
