HIHI UA-cam!!! sooo i have been busy with college finals (GET ME OUTTA HERE) and for my psychology class we had to make a quick PSA on a diversity related issue! i chose to do a quick cartoon about autism stigma at different levels, as its an issue that's deeply personal to me as an autistic person who failed to get properly diagnosed when i was a kid due to harmful outdated autism stereotypes ...

    I am autistic with talking problems like small stuttering and like that but here's a near small history about autism, diabetes Connection and whatever: So like- I was in school and (since I am Brazilian) I was talking with my teacher about going to my neurologist at CEAS/CREAS (if you don't know, it's a place with a calm, supporting place for autistic people like me, you, and autistic people). I was talking about it and when I said "autism" my teacher stopped me by saying that I cannot say that word. (autism if you don't know. *AUTISM.*) the only way I would say autism was "special needs" (that I hate saying this because it feels that I'm being ignorant about it.) But on the other side, I explained and done. Now here's the point. I'm diabetic, and I get stressed easily so that made me offended to use the word "special needs", but I offered to stay calm. But that's it, I'm editing this comment anyways.

    As an autistic person I 100% agree with everything said in this video, apart from ‘functioning labels were used depending on how much help a person needs’. As an autistic person, I’ve noticed that even when I show my autistic traits I’m still labelled as ‘high functioning’. Ablests put those labels on us not based on how much support we need, but how well they think that we can think for ourselves. They choose this based on body language and speech mainly, and I think that needs to be addressed, because I’ve never heard another autistic person talk about that. Just wanted to share that based on my experience idk

    • @SappiPapi
      @SappiPapi 3 місяці тому

      oh yeah that's exactly what i was trying to say in this video!!! me saying "you may have heard autistic people being described as high-functioning or low-functioning depending on the level of support they require" was me trying to lead into how they're used to discriminate against autistic people who might be like non-verbal for example or require more help in day-to-day functioning; i'm sorry if i was unclear on that haha :'D thank you very much for sharing your experience yeah! i think it's really important to hear from all members of the community on these kinds of subjects and i'm grateful for your perspective :3 /gen

    I have Autism and lemmie tell y'all, it is kinda rough. Y'know, like there's these friggin' ratchet kids at my school that kept callin' me "sped" and "retarded" n all that and acting like I was braindead and what have you. Funny thing is, these kids were in the sped classes themselves, and to everyone else, I seemed to be able to speak perfectly normal English. The tough part is that there was a large influx of them, and you practically saw them everywhere you went. Sometimes too though, they'd also baby my friend (who has both Autism and OCD) for the fun of it to see him go all apeshiz over that and get mad. I had to tell him "If any of them try to mess with you, ignore them." Seriously though, whenever he'd have a breakdown in class or something similar sometimes, everybody would just look at him and smile, or even sometimes laugh... EXCUSE YOU, NEUROTYPICAL SCUMBAGS?! I DON'T SMILE AT YOU WHEN YOU'RE CRYING, NOW DO I?! Yes, just because we have our own problems like everyone else suddenly does not matter because we have a condition that is "incorrect". I hate people like this and want to snap their necks.

      GOOD LORDDD no i totally understand your rage and exhaustion all of that sounds awful.. my previous schooling also sucked with the way they treated disabled kids but nowhere near to that extent and i'm so sorry you have to deal with that q-q if nothing else i'm really happy you and your friend have each other to support each other through it. i wish you guys nothing but the best and i hope you can get to a kinder and safer environment someday. until then know that i see your struggles and that i promise you you don't need to change for anyone who doesn't love you for you. everything will be okay in the end, and if it isn't okay, then it's not the end yet.💚

      @SappiPapi 3 місяці тому

      hi!!! i can understand your perspective - i understand that there are some autistic people out there who DO want a cure and with the cruel ways some non-autistic people treat us, i can totally empathize with their reasoning. however i'd like to say that the majority of us actually wouldn't prefer a cure - autism affects our day-to-day functioning, but it isn't a disease or something we're sick with! if anything the hardest part about being an autistic person myself is the harsh treatment i get from non-autistic people who think i need to be erased. i think investing into accommodations/services that improve quality of life for autistic people would end up not only being cheaper than finding a cure, but help to benefit non-autistic people as well! for example designated "quiet" areas or sensory rooms could benefit people who have anxiety and have trouble functioning in chaotic environments :] /info /nm

    Just wondering, what's the difference between labelling one as "a person with autism" or "an autistic person"? Not autistic, by the way--just going through my weekly hyperfixation (adhd moment) on a random topic I find cool. This is super insightful especially after 3 days of essay vid-scrounging on youtube because none of them talked about the racial and gender bias!! I've been trying to explain to my parents why using the terms low/high functioning are bad and you explained it wayy clearer than my yapping can, so, looking forward to pulling out this tonight 😎😎

    • @SappiPapi
      @SappiPapi 3 місяці тому

      HIII thank you so much for your feedback oh my gosh!!! regarding your question the reason a lot of us prefer identity first language (referring to us as autistic people) is because it acknowledges that our disability is an integral part of who were are and how it affects our day-to-day functioning! terms like "people with autism" can make us feel like our autism is a negative add-on or not an important part of our identity if that makes sense :o /info .. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR KIND WORDS THOUGH AHAAA i'm so so happy this video was able to help inform you!!! i think the racial/gender bias regarding autism diagnosis (and in healthcare in general for that matter) are so gross and it makes me so sad :( anybody can be autistic - regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, or whatever!!! we are here and have always been here and i wish more healthcare workers recognized that.. i'm happy i could clear up the confusion regarding functioning labels!!! i hope it was able to help your family understand too :'D thank you again for your feedback!!! have an awesome rest of your day/night muahaha :3

    Hi there! I’m extremely confused about these “labels”? I’m an autistic 15 year old digital artist and I’m confused whether these labels are fine or if they are not? My teachers say these labels are not harmful and I can use/say them and tell me not to believe everything I read on the internet which is true…but I’m confused on why the internet says these “labels” are harmful…and it’s making me rlly confused..? And I labeled myself “high-functioning” since I can do some things other autistic ppl can’t and because I was told I was high functioning? I have no idea…and I need proper clarification for that…? Any trusted sources so I can get clarification..? And not be lied to..? I know I have autism. I’m just confused about these functioning label parts. And I need the truth on whether they are bad or not.

    • @SappiPapi
      @SappiPapi 3 місяці тому

      HIII i'm so sorry for the late response! yes i'm totally happy to give you my thoughts :3 while i and many other autistic people dislike functioning labels due to them being created by non-autistic people as a way to ostracize autistic people who require more support and downplay the needs of autistic people with less visible symptoms, if you as an autistic person DO find comfort in those labels to explain your own needs, then i don't see anything wrong with that!!! we get enough garbage from non-autistic people as is, so i think you ought to do what makes you feel best about yourself :'3 if you're looking for more information on functioning labels though rachel elkin's article (the one cited at the end of this video) explains it a lot more in-depth!!! i personally like to use support needs labels as an alternative - such as saying high support needs in place of low-functioning, and low support needs in place of high functioning! this is just my perspective though :D i hope this helps!!! thank you for your comment :3

      hi!!! as someone who was also diagnosed with adhd and spd it's definitely possible you could also be autistic!!! that was my experience - i was screened for autism as a kid but wasn't able to get a diagnosis because of gross stereotypes existing about autism at the time - literally the only things holding me back were the fact i SOMETIMES made eye contact and displayed high empathy :/ if you're looking for resources i can't recommend the ASAN (autistic self advocacy network) enough - they're a nonprofit organization founded and led by autistic people who are working to clear up a lot of the stigma surrounding autism!!!

      FELLOW SGRAGGLY HERE!!! hi thank you so much for your feedback this is so sweet!!! i'm so sorry you have to constantly put up with ableism - so so much of my previous schooling was like that and those experiences still affect a lot of my self-esteem today :( i hope you can get to a healthier environment sooner - until then know you're wonderful the way you are and that you have no reason to change for anyone who doesn't love you for you :') hold your head high, i see you and we've got this!!!

    I AM AUTISM I AM COMING FOR YOU Im crying that kills me everytime xDD Cool video though!! I learned something new, I didn't know the functioning terms were offensive. As an autistic person I used them myself because my parents didn't understand how I could be autistic if I wasn't non verbal or semi verbal. But I just mask hard asf and when I stop masking from exhaustion or something it becomes extremely obvious. Part of life for me has been learning that I'm not as solo-functioning as I thought and It's okay to ask for help and have support to help instead of trying to approach everything solo. Especially when I can't do something solo, instead of beating myself up mentally and feeling shame it's important to remind oneself it's okay to ask for help. Unless the person you're asking help from starts degrading you saying its common sense, then ask elsewhere for sure 😅 (Honestly, I really dislike the term common sense. It has been used on me in degrading ways over and over when I was just confused or asking a question. Wish we could normalize not saying common sense tbf, the term feels ableist in itself, like the common mentality that "everyone should have" is used to call people "stupid" when they don't have that "mentality everyone should have". Granted I've seen it used in fair ways too like, "it's common sense not to juggle with knives", so I dunno, I'm iffy on it. It's ehh, alright as long as it's not degrading people I think, I've used it myself in the past and I need to catch myself when I do use it)

      AHHH HI I'M SO SO SORRY FOR THE LATE REPLY what the heck thank you so much for your kind words and your feedback!!! i'm so happy this could help you learn more about yourself - i'm still learning about my autistic self all the time even though i figured out i was autistic over a year ago :'D i'm so glad you're getting more comfortable with asking for help/accommodations! that's something i'm still learning to do even at 19 haha - self care is so so important and letting others take care of you is a lot easier said than done, and i'm really proud of you for getting there! also i just want to say autistic people who DO prefer using high/low functioning labels to explain their needs are totally valid :'3 we already get enough garbage from non-autistic people so i say we should represent ourselves in the way we feel most comfortable with!!! i totally get you on the masking thing - i used to mask so so much as a kid and i'm still recovering from the stress of that several years later >_< i'm sorry your parents didn't understand your needs, i hope they're better now :( ALSO I TOTALLY GET YOUR VIEWPOINT!!! i 100% agree - i don't think it's inherently offensive when you're talking about things like "it's common sense to not kill people" but when you say things like "it's common sense to look people in the eyes when they talk" then it's like woaaah okay let's take a sec. thank you for sharing that - i hadn't thought about the term in that way before!!! and of course once again thank you so much for sharing your thoughts - i'm so so grateful for everyone's voices and hearing from everybody has been so wonderful :'D have an awesome rest of your day/night!!!
