Yes! Thank you. The plot of the Club House itself is both its own character and literal manifestation of the restoration of hope, building a new future built upon the past while still honoring the past. Literally growing and moving on to the future, without forgetting the history of how you got there. From her ending the movie still waving the flags for her beloved dad though while looking forward to her future, to the classmates literally talk about what I just said previously (before you can move into the future you must first know why you are there) they are connected, and are her internal conflicts of her living through the complicated events happenig to her in her life (like her relationships with her parents and her first love) brought out both visually and audibly, in all the plots and these representations. (Rather than some cliche anime internal monolog) We get to see her face and over come all the things that try to drag her down, stuck living in hoplessy in the past, to trying hard for what they wanted, (to save the club house and a future together) and ultimately finding the truth and a new found hope of the future not plagued by what held her life back from before. What a journey. What a work of art. Simply... Beautiful.

@caseyhartsock2750 my high school art teacher looked at my art portfolio and said it all looks the same since all my work was fantasy related and colorful ..... now I understand why.... not all ghibli films could be big and fantasy and colorful.... some need to be mundane, beautiful, and relatable but still very lovable. I love this film for exactly that. It is a film I can watch in whatever mood

Who began the German war of aggression? Hitler did. Who began the Japanese war of aggression? Japanese emperor Hirohito did. They were allies and massacred too many people. We should not forget, the War criminals are responsible to all the tragedies. Why Japanese did not punish the Japanese emperor? Why Japanese still warship Japanese emperor? And today, Japanese liberal democratic party, they are the descendants of the war criminals, try to brake the Japanese peace constitution which inhibit the war, and let the Japanese people go to war again. And it is the United States that is trying to make Japan start war with China and North Korea for American business. Please, everyone, raise your voice. Choose peace over war!

My favourite scene is all of the Studio Ghibli movies is in The Cat Returns when the cat guards are searching for Haru in the maze and the ones with the walls attached to their backs in order to move the maze around all manage to line up in a row and ending up getting knocked down like dominos! The sound of them all meowing as they fall down gets me in hysterics every time!

What I love about Only Yesterday is that it could easily have been a live movie that wouldn't have needed a particularly large budget but instead we get one of the most beautifully animated movies of all time! It's the attention to the backdrops and small details that makes it and all the Studio Ghibli movies so special!

I honestly think they are just idealized men, with little to no flaws. That’s why they’re so appealing, and of course that makes sense. It’s the same reason most women love reading romance novels, no matter how cheesy; it’s because the men in them were written like a woman’s perfect fantasy of a man. No genuinely difficult personality traits or flaws to deal with or grow with. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the men of Ghibli films as much as anyone… But they’re enjoyable because they’re always nice, always good, always charming, always gracious. This isn’t a bad thing, as long as we don’t expect any man - or person - we ever meet to be just like a film character.

I feel lucky as an Asian growing up watching both Disney and Ghibli movies, but I'll always prefer Ghibli more❤. You can see the big difference compared to many lazy works from Disney nowadays. Ghibli NEVER gave us any lazy work.

I love hearing a bit about the background for this film! I loved "The Borrowers" when I was a kid, and this film was actually the first Ghibli film I ever watched, before I even knew what the studio was! Now, years later, after having seen almost all their films many times over, this is still one of my favorites. Because of that, I do take issue a little bit with your criticism of its plot. I don't think a film has to have a lot of plot twists or a complicated plot to be a great film. Some of the greatest films have simple, straightforward plots -- but they tell important, beautiful, and meaningful stories. This film is not just eye candy, it has a beautiful, valuable, and relevant story to tell. It explores the concepts and realities of death and survival, and different attitudes towards them (Sho accepts them to a fault, and Arrietty fights). It also reveals without direct exposition how some people are driven by their own greed, while others choose to be motivated by kindness, wonder, and selflessness. It's a study of, on the one hand, understanding and honor between species, and on the other hand, ignorance, fear, loathing, and exploitation based on "otherness". I repeat, this film is not just eye candy.
