first saw Turandot screened by my local cinema from the New York metro opera, interesting set and costumes in this version in contrast to the more traditional format, it does suit the opera,
Bravo bravo ❣️ This staging makes me feel Turandot is not a person but an ideology which Calaf is willing to lose true love ( parental love and romantic love) for. The face lighting makes me think of blindly following the leader . Timely concept.
These days I have watched several productions of this opera in UA-cam, and can say that the way this Calaf sings "VINcero" the first time (that is, when he sings "al alba vincero"), that very first syllable, VIN-cero, has been my favorite. Such sensitivity! Unique! I would like to know what production this was, their names, etc. I saw Turandot in person about eight years ago at the Kennedy Center by the Washington Opera, and fell in love with this opera.
I find myself in agreement with some of the other commts here. I am unsure whether or not i have watched thee worst production of Turandot or the best. I suppose if it has left you thinking, well it can't have been all bad. Thank you regardless for posting it.
@@zbynekvydra8210Exactly. How many lyric soprani have wrecked their voice trying to sing the role of Turandot. Way too many. Just be a great lyric soprano and leave the dramatic soprano roles to the actual dramatic soprani.
This is the best opera ive ever seen... the otherwordly design is not off putting at all, it's very unique and expresses the message in a very clear and touching way😭 the last part made me cry so hard
This information was already published by Eriknorcal, missing only the date which was October 7, 2019. The rest is as follows: Puccini's 'Turandot' with Theorin, de León, Vinogradov and Jaho from Barcelona Performers: Turandot: Iréne Theorin. Emperor Altoum: Chris Merritt. Timur: Alexander Vinogradov. Calaf: Jorge de León. Liù: Ermonela Jaho. Ping: Toni Marsol. Pang: Francisco Vas. Pong: Mikeldi Atxalandabaso. Mandarin: Michael Borth. Vivaldi Choir. Gran Teatre del Liceu Choir and Symphony Orchestra. Conductor: Josep Pons.
Opera is very silly, purposefully so 😄 It's not supposed to be boring or rigid. Before Wagner came along the performances used to be social events. People would drink, eat, talk a bit. Wagner kind of started the trend of "sit still and in silence for the entire thing". Which is especially cruel, since his operas are about 3-5 hours long...
Same. But this libretto is notoriously ridiculous (especially the third act), so may as well interpret it in an equally ridiculous manner. At least the singing is pretty good.
The first opera I ever saw was a Boston production of Moses und Aaron when I was in college many years ago. I did not understand the music of Arnold Schoenberg and I still don't. But this is lovely. OK, I've heard two other Turandots that were more traditional in approach. Still, it's Puccini! And in the middle of a sleepless night in a dreary June three weeks from my 80th birthday, I'll take it and be glad.
At the beginning the production reminds of Blade Runner, then just as I'm getting used to that, the end of the first act turns into Carrie, the Musical.
What kind of intoxicating substances do these European "opera producers" are on to come up with such ludicrous garbage? Thank God the singers saved the night. Maybe they borrowed this production from some crazy planet in the Andromeda galaxy.
And congrats on worst ending of Tir-an-door ever. He's in love with a mask and she's in love with a corpse, the very thing that attracted Puccini to the story.
Well this is the only production that make me feel turandot really got feelings and yes!! calaf is only in love with turandot's beauty with her facade nothing more or do you think he loved the way she puts to death her suitors?? this is not a love story
@@GitanAnimex No it's a political story but it's never done like this and the production here doesn't really understand that either. Calif's obviously been given the answers to the riddles by the Emperor because he's sick of his daughter's shenanigans. However, Turandot has to change thru understanding love or the story doesn't make any sense and like most operas just becomes thoroughly depressing which the composer clearly did not intend.
@@GitanAnimex Yes but he obviously knew the story he was putting the music to before he died and the guy who finished it simply reused many of the themes already written in the opera. The reason I like this opera is because it doesn't indulge in the usual hack tragic ending. Which makes directors who do this cliche mongers.
Nothing wrong with the set, amazing set, yeah Star Wars but who cares. But oh god, do we always have to suffer the cliche of aging fat opera singers? Can't we regenerqte a Corelli and Callas to give the idea that a man can be so captivated by a woman's beauty that he's prepared to throw away his life. I'd rather a young Sofia Loren mime Turandot that have to see pudgy warblers try to convince us.
@@GitanAnimex No, I think the demands of a really good opera are too extensive, great voice, great looking, great orchestra, great director great set, all done live, too many plates spinning, which is why most opera productions are sub sub standard.

Beautiful production - apart from Calaf. His 'wobble' was really tiring to listen to for 2.5 hours !!!!.

Ermonela Jaho is without doubt the most breathtaking soprano I’ve heard since Mirella Freni. The production could be better.
disastrous. we're lucky that Birgit Nilsson and Franco Corelli's performance are available here in yt.
Salvo soltanto Ermonela . Il resto da dimenticare.

CG on the stage.
Big, Big, Big. Simply wonderful.
Ad breaks every 10 minutes! Wtf!!
wtf at 2:8:26
If Calaf doesn't find somewhere and sit down with all of his nonsense.
Wow! Ermonela's performance was flawless and the audience gave her the best reception! I hope she will get the role of Turandot one day.
I hope she does not. Liu is a perfect role for her voice; Turandot is too heavy. She is a lyrical soprano.

Fantastische opera. Ontzettend mooi. Ik heb ervan genoten van de eerste tot de laatste minuut. 👏👏👏👏

2:25:22-2:26:29 Puccini must have adored Handel’s oratorio choruses 🤓

I've loved Opera for years. But I am honestly new to the nomenclature.
Can I get the cast and produtcion notes? Who, what, when, where?

I think the lighting is interesting and shows the compulsion to follow power or an ideology. Quite current concerns.
