    hi sir ...although i read the comments of may colleagues , but still am confusing , in the design of column by etabs , the oreintation of columns in the summary labeled with axies 2,3 and this matters to tell which major or minor ... for moments , it is logical that the shorter side of column( the weaker) will buckle more than that of longer side , now here in etabs the shorter is about 2 axis ( minor ) , and the longer is about 3 axis ..... but why this is not always the case ??? sometimes it is totally rhe opposite ..... for example , the etabs summary shows that the major bend is about 3 axis but above of the page the column of horizontal oreintation has an arrow of 3 axis parallel to the longer side of the column . why ?

    In etabs, when u model column it is in 2 and 3 direction. 2 perpendicular to short and 3 perpendicular to long. As per your explanation. The no. 3 is the major axis. When i run the model. And see the summary. The result the Vu2 is the major and Vu3 is the minor. It contradicts your explanation kindly explain pls. Thank you. 😊

      In ETABS, axis conventions sometimes cause confusion: 2 and 3 directions are simply labels for the local axes, not fixed designations for "major" or "minor" axes. Typically, the 3-axis aligns with the column's longer side, making it the major axis. However, Vu2 and Vu3 refer to shear forces along these local axes, not necessarily indicating "major" or "minor." For design, always verify which axis aligns with the longer dimension (major) and shorter (minor), regardless of Vu2/Vu3 naming.

    In case of square columns, what are the major and minor axes?

    • @hcStructuralDesigns
      @hcStructuralDesigns 3 місяці тому

      In square columns, both the major and minor axes are identical due to their symmetry. The moment of inertia and stiffness are the same in both directions, so either axis can be considered as the major or minor axis.
