Amazing Grace was written by John Newton, a slave trader turned Anglican clergyman, in the year 1777. He was inspired to write this hymn after he was caught in a storm while carrying a boatload of slaves from West Africa to the Caribbean. Thinking the storm was God's punishment against him for having no regard for the safety of fellow humans, he prayed and asked God for forgiveness, promising he would take everyone on board the ship back home if he survived. Of course, Mr. Newton survived, took all the captives back to Africa, and later returned to England, where he decided to become a minister in the Anglican Church to celebrate God's grace towards him during the storm at sea. This led to him writing Amazing Grace.
