Great demonstration. Thank you.
@@NYCNAP you're welcome. And thank you.
Gaden uke and gedan barrai are the wrong way round terminology wise. This is a problem i have at my club but keep getting told "It's what kancho calls them so that's what we call them," and it does my head in. The english translation of gedan barrai is low level or downward sweep.
Having watched some of your videos i have a question. This is not a dig at anything you are doing it is a genuine question. Why did you change some of the kata? I know your karate background, and i know that they have been changed before i just wondered the reason behind the change.
@ThorOdinson13 I did it originally so that gkr couldn't say I was steeling their syllabus. But now I believe the changes I have made are my own twist.
@@tadashiryukaratedo4484 Just because you use the same kata, he wouldn't be able to sue as he knicked them from Goju Kai and Shotokan, with maybe the exception of 2nd kata, as Kancho is supposed to have made it up himself. I can see why you would want to change things there are plenty of things I would change if I started up my own style based on gkr.
@ThorOdinson13 I have basically made my style. Noone in the world will ever have my knowledge.
@@tadashiryukaratedo4484 It's like Bruce Lee said, take what works get rid of the rest and add something of yourself, which is what it looks like you have.
@ThorOdinson13 that's exactly what I have done. I don't belive the words "traditional karate" exist anymore. There are so many styles developed by so many people. I changed kata because I know my mind, and my ability. Tradition to me is the etiquette and values that karate teaches, not the actual karate itself. I just had the balls to do it, rather than follow someone else which can be limit a person's mind and hinder progress. When I say progress I'm not talking grades, I'm talking the thoughts and ideas behind what a person is doing. Like when I was with gkr, I was limited to what I could teach and don't ask because the answer was always "that's what kancho wants", my mind was full of ideas but I couldn't express them. Karate ie kata, is an art form and a way of self expression, martial artist should have an open mind. I removed my limitations.
Hey Happy Birthday James 4 the other day hope your doing well meant to send this on the day 😀

Great stuff..love the kata
Thanks for posting this I will be using it as my go to reference while perfecting this kata. I do Shotokan so this is all extra things to practice.
@raysmith5639 well thanks for watching. I do hope it helps. Please note this is my version of this kata ie not the goju version. But yes, if you do shotokan you will notice bassai dai, kanku dai and a few others. All broken down the same way. Good luck on your journey.
Miss these days hope your keeping well

@Mbye Nyang thanks for watching and commenting. Karate is a journey, enjoy yours.
If you put your right leg behind Rich's leg doesn't that put you off balance as we talked about last night?
No, because of where he is in relation to where I am.
Very useful Thank you sensei!
@Tiago Nguma thanks for watching and commenting. And you're welcome.
Great video as always 😊
Hi. Some of these sanseru vids have the comments turned off. I have no idea why. Please when leaving a comment let me know which video it refers to if the comments are off that particular vid. My apologies.
Osu
what if instead of using back fist you just elbowed the person in the face. Using the back of your knuckles looks painful and has less force, but I could be wrong since I don't know martial arts.
If it works then it works. But this video is to show the backfist, not an elbow strike. Thanks for your comment.
@@tadashiryukaratedo4484 I'm asking what is the comparison of effectiveness.
@@quilfrey1139 oh.... the elbow strike can and will cause more damage due to amount of pounds per square inch. The idea of a back fist is to "stun" the opponent. Plus you have more reach. Elbow strikes are perfect for up close and personal but also good for blocking. In short you are right. Here is why...... I watched some professional "breakers" on TV years ago, they tested the Elbow strike. Being hit by a car at 30mph will generate around 8-900 pounds of pressure per square inch, the round Elbow strike generated just over 1200 psi. So yes, if you can use the elbow, go for it.
@@tadashiryukaratedo4484 got it, so they question is how much damage you are intending. Thank you for your input, that was helpful 👍
@@quilfrey1139 any time.
Great lesson learnt a lot more of this Kata good to have it broken down and explained so well.
@Greg Griffiths thank you for 1. Watching and 2. Commenting. Check out other kata on this page. Anything in the "mechanics" folder is a total breakdown. Don't forget to subscribe 😁

Thank you Shihan , this really helped....👍
Please. Keep showing these useless applications. Still make fun of practitioners, who are ignorant and stupid by continuing to see the same applications over and over and convince themselves that they are correct. But the masters of the past weren't stupid. Those of the present are, who do not know the bunkai of kata, and they invent anything to mask their ignorance.
These ideas are to help people understand the techniques. I never say that any of the "bunkai" works. The actual term you are looking for is "ime" that is "application" the word "bunkai" means "to break down". So inlight of what you have written I believe that I am "breaking down" the techniques so that someone watching can learn. If you want the real stuff then that would be in a class setting. Any "bunkai" that is on this channel is user friendly. I save the other stuff for class. Ie..... only my students get to go over the "ime". You may ask why this is user friendly.. well let me answer that for you. I want people to look at my videos and say "I can / want to do that", some videos I see can put people off. I don't believe martial arts should put anyone off. As for you blatant ignorance of kata "bunkai", please note that there isn't just 1 bunkai for anything. I see far too many people only showing 1 version, but the truth is that there are many bunkai for many of the techniques in karate. Basically you can allow your mind to run free. As for making fun of practitioners... I'm sorry but where I see it, I say it. The main ones I do comment on and come across are the "Americanised" people ie.. way over the top. I tell people what I see in their kata mainly. I rarely comment on bunkai. As for you reference to "those of the present are"... you have just insulted all "present" "masters".... ps, I never proclaimed to be a "master".
I have just been to your channel. I think you need to check yourself before you pop at me.
@@tadashiryukaratedo4484 You have a great responsibility towards your students and the people who watch your videos. If what you show is not applicable in a real situation, it is just academy. it's not useful.
@@tadashiryukaratedo4484 Try a shihonage, a sankyonage (overturned) and a jujinage.
@@artimarzialiefitness-aless6034 I have never professed to it being real. However, my belief is that 80% of "ime" isn't useful anyway. Why? Because you are expecting you opponent to do certain things ie the way you have trained. Reality is that people are unpredictable, and you cannot not train for unpredictability.
I can learn from this sensei very good teacher!!!!osu!
Thank you for your comment. I hope my videos help in some way.
6 months into my training and covid restrictions have only just allowed us to do full sparring practice. Today's lesson was bunkai for taigyoku shodan and nidan. I didn't see all these possibilities before, I thought it was just practice to block, strike and turn but it actually has hundreds of practical applications too... I did a kick and then sensei threw me on the floor effortlessly !! (I mean he's high grade, but it worked when I tried on him too!)
That's the thing about bunkai, there is more than 1. Some styles get stuck in their ways and say that "this is THE bunkai for this move". To me this limits not only the style but the student. The one thing that bunkai should do is open not only a teachers mind but the mind of the student. Whenever you think of bunkai, open your mind, remember that not all is as it seems in karate.
@@tadashiryukaratedo4484 yea I'm open to new ideas. But their teaching was like, from here you're behind. You can grab here, here, here. Strike here, here, here, run away from danger, sweep the leg and throw here, here or here... Me and a month long white belt were doing proper effective stuff, I did 4 years approx of aikido. Dont have the confidence in it that I do of 6 months on and off socially distant karate!
@@tadashiryukaratedo4484 my biggest issue at the moment is I've trained 2 metres away from people and unless in a proper fight never really hit a real person... how do I get over the :I don't want to hurt you" cuz they're expecting a proper strike to practice against and I don't kick properly or don't take the chance when I'm sparring cuz I don't want to hurt them, it's like a mental block where I can't hit them! In a real fight then yea I kick the back of their head all day long, but yesterday I hesitated as to not hurt the partner then he turned round and floored me lol
@@john9409 well if you ever need advice or help via video class or something just ask. You can email me directly tadashi.ryu@yahoo.com Or find me on Facebook James Davey
@@john9409 tadashi moto is "in order for self improvement we must first remove self doubt". The greatest skill in any martial art is to not fight. Take the 2 meter training and reduce the space over time. In time confidence comes, karate isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. Take time to practice and build up a level of skill. Anyone can hit another person and hurt them, the true skill is "San do mae" (forgive the spelling) it means skin touch. Having thr choice to hold back or follow through. Work on skill ie technique. Technique will forever win over power or speed.
Can u do were u do step by step so i can understand it

Hi James nice Kata you do in the video, just a quick note I’ve been studying Goju Ryu Kata since 1988 and have seen this Kata performed many ways depending on the association you are training with and if you want to do a way that suits your association that’s not a problem, just have fun doing Kata take care Michael

What style of karate did you study before you started your own club? What Dan grade are you? Not trolling just genuinely interested.
Hi. I spent around 18 years as a full time student/manager with GKR karate. I got to my 4th dan (that as high as their syllabus goes). I became very dissolutioned with the business and to a point the karate. I left and decided to take what I know, what I have seen and also add my own parts to kata and make Tadashi. I don't believe there is 1 style that is "traditional" due to many styles of karate. You could say because what I have done, I have followed traditional. Ie branching off and making my own.
