Another good way of cruising the Dandenongs is getting by train on the Belgrave Line to Upper Ferntree Gully or on the Lilydale Line to Croydon and using the linking bus No. 688 between those 2 stations. Interesting stops are Olinda and Mount Dandenong. Regardless of weather, it is always 6°C / 10.8° F cooler than at the foot of the mountain, although, especially in winter, the top can be shrouded in fog, low clouds and misty rain.

Forget about the 1000 steps. From Upper Ferntree Gully Station just cross the main road, leave the Royal Hotel on the left and head up the road through a roundabout to the Angliss Hospital. That is Talaskia Road. Look to your right or south and see the steps on the hill. Yep, up you go, first on the asphalted road then up the steps. Nobody will be up there, only local residents, NO tourists. Turn right, follow the road to a T-section and go downhill. Soon you will see another set of steps downhill. If that was not enough exercise, turn right, head back to the hospital and track up to those steps again. Enjoy the serenity all to yourself.

You probably should have left the station by the back entrance and you'd then be straight onto the path that leads you to the 1000 steps. The path runs alongside the railway track until you take a left. That way is quicker than walking along the main road and is more peaceful.

Just to note, people shouldn't just leave stuff out hoping someone else will take it. You are supposed to ring the local council, and book with them to come and collect it. If people take stuff from that pile in the mean time, then all good, but if you don't notify them it will sit there for a long time and the council will eventually flag it as being an illegal dump.

Didnt realise there are 20 of them. Lucky people who stay there. And thanks to Mr Sng and Mrs Sng for not letting go of the land
