Conjuncture: Gillian Hart on South Africa and Palestine/Israel in a Global Frame | S3 Ep 6
This episode features a talk by geographer Gillian Hart from the Howard Zinn Book Fair in San Francisco in December 2023. Hart interrogates the conflation of anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism and situates Palestine/Israel and South African apartheid in a global comparative frame. Her talk draws upon her presentation at the Historical Materialism London conference in November 2023. Questions raised in both lectures have informed her new Antipode article, “Progeny of Empire: Defining Moments of Nation Formation in South Africa and Palestine/Israel,” available here:

0:00:00 I n t r o d u c t i o n 0:09:42 >>> Start of thanatocracy discussion: Peter Linebaugh Robin DG Kelley
What a crock of 💩
Excellent illustration of the varied consequences of the Leftist mind virus.
Is Robin Kelley the brother of Dr Don Quinn Kelley? 😮 Somebody please respond.
Thank you so much for this brilliant, illuminating discussion.
You are missing the point Mr Kamola: it is not Wall Street moguls that are dictating what universities should do: they are the only one you arrogant teachers hear. We are millions horrifiend by the despicable attitude of Harvard Penn and MIT presidents. We need a new governance. Wokism must end now.
Brilliant as always, thanks for this!
Thank, s.....
There is only 1 reality . You'll know you're not living in it when things don't seem to be adding up. Example , what the collective West thought would happen to Russia after they imposed massive sanctions on the country . As opposed to what actually happened .
You ne3d the proper theory to move forward in the struggle against a well funded and totalitarian capitalist class. If you don't you end up like Occupy Wall Street .
His big idea is just basic Marxism
The scale and scope of this problem is one of the most underreported stories in our polity. Everything he's said is true, yet it's so much worse. I hope someday I'll be free to tell the tale. I supported Koch money on my campus. No one knew we were signing up was turning our department and then the university into a place where there are no rules, crimes are committed, and cannot even tell the truth about what happens without being disciplined. Executives cover everything up, and then even compliance agencies--overworked, underfunded, and assuming the complaints are "political" ---don't take the time to investigate.
You think the Koch’s and the right are fueling the campus culture wars? Only one side dominates campuses, is intolerant, and views the campus as a battlefield. The left. Only one side is responsible for Critical Race Pedagogy both for grade school kids, the military, etc.
So, by the same token, all that is melting in the air will not be detected until the end.
As a South African I am trying to understand what the point of the research is actually trying to achieve besides a news report. Perhaps what you should invest your time in is 1: The ANC made it very clear in the 1994 elections that they will give free education and free housing 2. Why are so many people moving to informal settlements close to urban environments 3. Why and how can we educate people that the current ANC government is just as corrupt and evil as the previous one. 4.How can we impose sanctions just like they did in the 80's on current government to hold them accountable for being the biggest criminal syndicate on the planet. This is far too conservative discussion. We need to liberate people.
Housing is an easy problem to solve. Marry people. Western teachings are not helpful, we need to arrange marriages again. In Third World cultures, husbands to be are supposed to pay a dowry and build a house for his bride. Enforce housing plans through this and you'll see a big change - holding men accountable.
Yes Donald Trump was popular because he didn't want to put us in a war soon as the Liberals get in there the war machine starts and the money starts to roll
Brilliant! The array of traditions, movements, events, individuals, and ideas brought into conversation here is simply stunning. Thank you for writing this book, Christina, and thank you both for this fantastic interview.
