Road Conditions on the Arkansas Missouri Border Near Lead Hill on January 15th, 2024

Due to some stores being out of propane last Thursday, we had no choice but to run to Bergman, Arkansas today to get propane for our greenhouse and mushroom growing building. A car carrier ran off the road West of Lead Hill at Hwy 14 and Horseshoe Bend Road. As we were flagged through that I looked back to see our Pit mix Buster chasing us down Hwy 14. After his mile run he enjoyed the ride to ...

I left mine in vodka from October till now. January 22. Is it still good
Yes, the alcohol acts as a preservative so it should be. The longer you let the alcohol extract the plant chemicals the more potent will be the tincture, up to a point. Leaving it for too long may affect the final look of the tincture.
Good info! Well done!
Thank you!
Thank you!
I gathered my first ever Goldenrod today, 9/28/2023. I will attempt to make my first Tinture today. Later I may attempt to make an infused oil and maybe a Goldenrod salve. My question is, should I hang it to air dry inside, or can I start today with it still green? Which is best? Thank you for all your time, effort, and energy.
I would dry it first if you are going to use the traditional method of making a tincture. Good luck on your first tincture!
@LostInTheOzarks well, they are hanging as I write this. thank you for all your time, effort, and energy, brother...
Many say using fresh herbs causes too much moisture in oil, so to use dried. Just curious why you use fresh.
Thanks for the question. I use a double boiler on low heat to infuse the oil over 72 hours. I maintain the temperature of the oil at between 140-170° F. I cover the jar with a coffee filter and secure it with a rubber band. This allows any moisture that might make it's way into the oil to evaporate. I have some oil in a jar that I never got around to using that is two years old, and it hasn't spoiled. Since I didn't use it I within a year I kept it and used it as a control in an experiment to see if it made any difference. In my personal experience, it did not. However, it would probably be better to use dried plant material if you do the traditional method of placing it on a shelf for 6-8 weeks or longer to slowly infuse.
I'm curious to ask how would you do it differently if you were doing a non-alcohol tincture? Would you have to modify the recipe more than just say using a vegetable gel or apple cider vinegar somehow? And if you heat it, wouldn't you have to not go above a certain temperature to avoid damaging any beneficial properties? (No idea what that would be.)
The process would be exactly the same if you were to make a glycerite using vegetable glycerin, or an extraction using vinegar. I only use heat when making an infused oil to speed up the process. Using low heat between 140-170° F you can create the infusion in about 72 hours versus 6-8 weeks in a cupboard. Of course, you wouldn't use heat with alcohol due to the fire risk as the alcohol vaporizes. It's also important to note that the infused oil will be used externally, while tinctures and other infusions are made to be used internally, so I would stick with proven recipes for anything I am planning to take internally. I hope that helps.
Wow very awesome. Thank you for the reply./ @@LostInTheOzarks
You can use raw honey ..or virgin oilve oil..
Thanks for the video. And goldenrod is such a wonderful plant. Bees sure love it too. You have some skills.
Thank you very much!
you didn't say how to identify it.
Goldenrod is pretty easy to identify, but, if you want to learn more about how to identify wild plants I suggest getting a good field guide. It's the best way to learn how to identify edible and medicinal plants. This is a good one for the Eastern and Central US: amzn.to/48slCwl
thanks. i tried to google the image i took of some growing outside but there was so much conflicting information!@@LostInTheOzarks
Fellow Ozarkian here 👋 thanks for the helpful information
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and for your kind remarks.
What part of the Ozarks are you in? We have a cabin in Bollinger County and a house in town in Cape Girardeau County. Do you ever do homestead conferences?
We are located in Boone County, AR. We aren't currently looking at doing conferences but it might be something we look at in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video Gary! I have some Goldenrod that popped up at our place near the beginning of Bull Shoals Lake. I told my wife about it and she told me "You need to kill it right now because it will flare up Jim's (our son) allergies!". So instead I decided to confirm it's Goldenrod and then looked into it's characteristics and found out it's actually good for treating allergies. I'll harvest it tomorrow and make the tincture and infused oil using your directions (thank you for sharing those!), and start drying the leaves for tea. Apparently there are some bugs that like to munch on the leafs too, so I'll leave a few for them since they've left plenty for me. I suspect there is a lot more on our property. I just haven't walked it yet to find out.
Thank you so much. It is a shame that the ragweed that blooms at the same time is mostly to blame for allergies, but Goldenrod gets the blame. I'm happy you decided to do the research and I hope you get good results.
Did you have to worry about any water in the fresh plant causing the oil to go rancid? or mold?
No. Just make sure and lay the plant material out to dry after you rinse it off. The small amount of moisture in the fresh plant material doesn't cause issues in my experience. If you are worried about that you can dry the plant material and it will still work for your tincture.
You can also just cover the oil with a few layers of cheesecloth to let any moisture out
Looks like a great place to fish!
worked at Horton Chevrolet for a couple of months for a few bucks an hour then offered construction job in California for 8 bucks an hour to start no brainer
near the spring was ouro drag strip on the highway we had 1/4 mile marked back in the 70,s
old stomping grounds when i lived in Witts Springs during H S weekends at the daisy queen then to the drive in
I don't know how people can stand to live there. It looks so boring and depressing and quiet. I'm used to big city living and having everything that I need within easy walking distance from my apartment. And having a ton of things to choose from for entertainment. There are probably more people on my block than in the whole town of Marshall, AR..
Beautiful area. Great video. Thanks for sharing!
We found our way up there by accident and it was a trip.
What a great place to fish river n lake go every year
Love this! I make tinctures and infused oils and salves all the time. This knowledge needs to be shared more.
Thank you. I totally agree.
Shouldn't make it with sunflower oil it's made with chamicals
@@kathyhirsch379 I agree. Seed lis go rancid very quickly and are processed with too many chemicals. Coconut oil or olive oil are the bast. Tallow or lard are even better but they have to be kept liquid while infusing.
Beautiful..absolutely beautiful….
going next week second time at His Place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Cotter is one of my favorite places!! Friendly people and great fishing!!6 Thanks for sharing!!
Can you use corn liquor? Anywhere from 100-140 proof.
You can use any alcohol above 80 proof (40%). Just be sure it is something you can stand to take by mouth since you usually hold a tincture under the tongue for some absorption before swallowing.
Sir, so how would I use the tincture? Do I drink it? Rub it? Not sure.
It is normally taken by mouth. The usual recommended dosage is 1-3 ml. A good way to use tinctures is to place them in a 4 oz dropper bottle. Squeeze the rubber stopper and the amount in the dropper is a "dropper full", approximately 1 ml. To get 3 ml just turn the dropper upside down and squeeze the dropper, hold it until you put it back into the bottle then release. That is about 2 ml. Do it once more to fill the dropper, and that is about 3 ml. Drop the tincture under the tongue and let it sit there for up to a minute. Then swallow it. Placing it under the tongue allows some of the tincture to be absorbed through the mucus membranes in the mouth right away. If it starts burning from the alcohol just go ahead and swallow it. I hope this helps.
Can you use coconut oil?
You can use fractionated coconut oil, which is liquid at room temperature. You can't use the coconut oil you might find in the supermarket, as it becomes solid at 76° F.
I get organic refined, I did just try and put in double boiler for 3 days, and strained I'm hoping it will hold. To use for balms. I use it to infuse myrrh and frankincense. That works What's ur thought
Awaiting part two!
I moved from the PNW to mountain home about 6 months ago. Still haven't unpacked my rod yet. Thanks for the video. I think I may head that way this weekend.
We have maps and other info about many of the access points close to Mountain Home at lostintheozarks.com.
So the 40 percent works well ehough too? I had just bought 100 proof 50/50 cause some lady did hers with that but it's not as easy to find as the 80 !
Yes, 40% works fine. That said, 80 proof is the minimum you want to use. I just buy a liter of whatever they have on sale, and use it strictly for tinctures.
It was probably April. She uses 100 50/50 as that is folk medicine and no math. 80 is fine for this. Extracting medicine from bark usually needs high alcohol content. Some are water soluble though.

What trail takes you to the area captured between min 4 and 5?
It is called Pruitt Landing. You can drive right up to the river here.
Beautiful channel
Cnt wait for part twoo!!!!
What other oils can be used besides sunflower? I just made a goldenrod tincture and a bottle of infused honey but I want to try making an oil to see if it helps topically with aches and pains. I do not have sunflower oil. Vegetable oil? Olive oil? Coconut ?
Any carrier oil can be used. Some options include sweet almond, grapeseed, fractionated coconut oil, etc. A lighter oil like grapeseed will absorb faster into the skin than a heavier oil like apricot seed oil, for example. It depends on your taste. You can read this article on carrier oils on our website for more information. aromatherapy.garydaviswebsitecreation.com/carrier-oil-aromatherapy-terms
Did you mention here that there was something on your website regarding the uses for goldenrod?

Nice video, that looks like a really cool area to explore! Thanks for sharing!
Great video!
Did you not go on down Highway 7 and actually view the theme park?
I did but you can't really see much of the theme park from the road.
I just wondered. I drive by there about once every couple weeks and the park is easy to see
@@garybest706 It's easier to see now that the leaves are off the trees. You can actually see Marble Falls from Highway 7. But the theme park is pretty run down now. Not really the subject for a video unless the owners would let you get inside. I have thought about taking my drone back and trying to get some aerial views of the park.
Dog patch just bought by Billionaire Johnie Morris to be converted to a Nature Conservation area. He does top notch stuff. Big Cedar, Dogwood Canyon, etc. It will be very nice!
Question, is this area where the ski lodge and motel were located?
These style of videos always benefit from natural sound only. If you have the B-roll can you upload the raw clips of dam only without the music and stills?
To which style of video are you referring? I could upload the B-roll but I chose a different creative avenue. I appreciate you watching the video and leaving a comment.
If you guys are ever in my area, I would like to meet. I do a little you-tubing too. Pocahontas, Arkansas
We just subscribed to your channel too. Very interesting channel. If we get over that way we'll sure give you a shout.
Just subbed. Where are ya'll located?
On Bull Shoals Lake near Diamond City.
