    I left mine in vodka from October till now. January 22. Is it still good

    • @LostInTheOzarks
      @LostInTheOzarks 6 місяців тому

      Yes, the alcohol acts as a preservative so it should be. The longer you let the alcohol extract the plant chemicals the more potent will be the tincture, up to a point. Leaving it for too long may affect the final look of the tincture.

    I gathered my first ever Goldenrod today, 9/28/2023. I will attempt to make my first Tinture today. Later I may attempt to make an infused oil and maybe a Goldenrod salve. My question is, should I hang it to air dry inside, or can I start today with it still green? Which is best? Thank you for all your time, effort, and energy.

    Many say using fresh herbs causes too much moisture in oil, so to use dried. Just curious why you use fresh.

    • @LostInTheOzarks
      @LostInTheOzarks 10 місяців тому

      Thanks for the question. I use a double boiler on low heat to infuse the oil over 72 hours. I maintain the temperature of the oil at between 140-170° F. I cover the jar with a coffee filter and secure it with a rubber band. This allows any moisture that might make it's way into the oil to evaporate. I have some oil in a jar that I never got around to using that is two years old, and it hasn't spoiled. Since I didn't use it I within a year I kept it and used it as a control in an experiment to see if it made any difference. In my personal experience, it did not. However, it would probably be better to use dried plant material if you do the traditional method of placing it on a shelf for 6-8 weeks or longer to slowly infuse.

  • @noahriding5780
    @noahriding5780 10 місяців тому

    I'm curious to ask how would you do it differently if you were doing a non-alcohol tincture? Would you have to modify the recipe more than just say using a vegetable gel or apple cider vinegar somehow? And if you heat it, wouldn't you have to not go above a certain temperature to avoid damaging any beneficial properties? (No idea what that would be.)

    • @LostInTheOzarks
      @LostInTheOzarks 10 місяців тому

      The process would be exactly the same if you were to make a glycerite using vegetable glycerin, or an extraction using vinegar. I only use heat when making an infused oil to speed up the process. Using low heat between 140-170° F you can create the infusion in about 72 hours versus 6-8 weeks in a cupboard. Of course, you wouldn't use heat with alcohol due to the fire risk as the alcohol vaporizes. It's also important to note that the infused oil will be used externally, while tinctures and other infusions are made to be used internally, so I would stick with proven recipes for anything I am planning to take internally. I hope that helps.

    Great video Gary! I have some Goldenrod that popped up at our place near the beginning of Bull Shoals Lake. I told my wife about it and she told me "You need to kill it right now because it will flare up Jim's (our son) allergies!". So instead I decided to confirm it's Goldenrod and then looked into it's characteristics and found out it's actually good for treating allergies. I'll harvest it tomorrow and make the tincture and infused oil using your directions (thank you for sharing those!), and start drying the leaves for tea. Apparently there are some bugs that like to munch on the leafs too, so I'll leave a few for them since they've left plenty for me. I suspect there is a lot more on our property. I just haven't walked it yet to find out.

    • @LostInTheOzarks
      @LostInTheOzarks 10 місяців тому

      Thank you so much. It is a shame that the ragweed that blooms at the same time is mostly to blame for allergies, but Goldenrod gets the blame. I'm happy you decided to do the research and I hope you get good results.

    Did you have to worry about any water in the fresh plant causing the oil to go rancid? or mold?

    • @LostInTheOzarks
      @LostInTheOzarks 11 місяців тому

      No. Just make sure and lay the plant material out to dry after you rinse it off. The small amount of moisture in the fresh plant material doesn't cause issues in my experience. If you are worried about that you can dry the plant material and it will still work for your tincture.

      @LostInTheOzarks 2 роки тому

      You can use any alcohol above 80 proof (40%). Just be sure it is something you can stand to take by mouth since you usually hold a tincture under the tongue for some absorption before swallowing.

  • @lolafigueroa9871
    @lolafigueroa9871 2 роки тому

    Sir, so how would I use the tincture? Do I drink it? Rub it? Not sure.

    • @LostInTheOzarks
      @LostInTheOzarks 2 роки тому

      It is normally taken by mouth. The usual recommended dosage is 1-3 ml. A good way to use tinctures is to place them in a 4 oz dropper bottle. Squeeze the rubber stopper and the amount in the dropper is a "dropper full", approximately 1 ml. To get 3 ml just turn the dropper upside down and squeeze the dropper, hold it until you put it back into the bottle then release. That is about 2 ml. Do it once more to fill the dropper, and that is about 3 ml. Drop the tincture under the tongue and let it sit there for up to a minute. Then swallow it. Placing it under the tongue allows some of the tincture to be absorbed through the mucus membranes in the mouth right away. If it starts burning from the alcohol just go ahead and swallow it. I hope this helps.

Some options include sweet almond, grapeseed, fractionated coconut oil, etc. A lighter oil like grapeseed will absorb faster into the skin than a heavier oil like apricot seed oil, for example.
