Hi speech friends!
I am a speech pathologist hoping to tell the world about the ins and outs of speech pathology. When I first heard about speech pathology, I did not see any content creators! I so desperately wanted to know what speech pathology was like before I applied to programs, but the content was limited. I decided to create this channel to educate others about this field (and the truths behind it). I love answering questions and talking with others!

Hello! I am a fellow SLP and have started a a newsletter for graduate students in the field and for those wanting to learn more about speech-language pathology. I am wondering if you would like to be part of a future edition. I have called this The Prospective SLP newsletter and while it is new, I am trying to highlight some SLPs in the Weekly Spotlight, a section of the newsletter that allows for SLPs to share their experiences. My goal with this newsletter is to share helpful resources for students, answer some questions, provide helpful resources, and ultimately be able to provide contacts for graduate students when they graduate from their programs and start looking for employment. If you would like to be in the Weekly Spotlight, please let me know. I am hoping that, over time, this can be a helpful resource for prospective SLPs and be beneficial for the SLPs that have offered input as well. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Hi! Thank you for reaching out about this opportunity ☺ I love your idea! I would love to help out! Let me know what you need!
@@YourLocalSpeechie Awesome, thank you! Do you have an email where I can send more details? I have some links to share. Thank you!🙂

@@YourLocalSpeechie Thank you! I'll reach out through email now.
What a great video! I loved it !

Thess are such detailed insights! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! I'm starting my SLP Masters this Fall ✨
Thank you!! I am so glad you enjoyed this ☺ Good luck this Fall! You are going to be great :)

Starting my undergrad for speech pathology soon! Hope that COVID didn't treat you terribly.
Congratulations! Let me know if you have any questions during undergrad ☺ And aw thank you, I am here now and that is all that matters
Thank you for this!
Oh my goodness, of course! Thank you for enjoying ☺
Your adventure has help me so much! I just received a job offer for Maryland. How long did it take your license to get approved? Also, did you have to wait until you were completely done with school and your hours to apply?
Aw thank you, I am so happy it has helped you! Congratulations on the job offer ☺👏🏻 My license process was fairly quick! I believe it got approved within a few weeks or a couple of months :) From what I remember, you could only apply once you were done with school since you had to have hours approved and a document from school saying that you received your degree, I applied a week or so after graduation.
How are you so darn good with kids lol
Aw oh my gosh! Thank you for thinking that, I just try to have fun 😭
Hey! I was just accepted into SLP grad school and was curious about your note-taking and study methods; do you have any tips to share?? TIA! <3
Hi! Thank you so much for reaching out about this plus congratulations! I honestly was never a big "write in a notebook" girl- I typically would make my study sets on Quizlet during class so I could start studying them. I have a bunch left on my profile if you want me to share! It is also beneficial to know the process of what you are learning about, not just studying surface value but really being able to discuss the topic with others and know your stuff :)
Sure sharing would be great, if you don’t mind! I’m curious about what kinds of things exactly I’ll be studying. I’m supposed to start classes in May and even though I did great in undergrad, I’m an out of field student and haven’t been in school since 2017, so I’m a little nervous!
@@mcgillshelby Of course! You will do great plus everyone will be nervous in your program so you will have good people around you to help ease your feelings 🙂 Here is the name: taylor_wach (check out my folders and you will see all of the classes!)
thank you for validating how tough the cfy is 🥲
What city or state are you in? I know the pay varies greatly.
I am in Maryland! But I am seeing overall that the pay is not up to par for all of our education and work we do in the different settings :)
I love your video. I have applied to do speech pathology and I am nervous and excited. Will find out 16 October.
Aw, thank you so much! Good luck with everything, I hope you found out some good news yesterday ☺

Hi! I'm really interested in applying for a SLP graduate program and love your content. It has been very inspiring to see the real day to day. Love it and look forward to seeing more :)
Aw thank you so much! 🥰 Let me know if you have any questions!
when you mention notes are you doing SOAPS then?? Thanks for the video super interested in this setting!
I apologize for such a late response! Yes, I am referring to SOAP notes :)
Hi! I just started my last clinical rotation of graduate school and loving it! I recently passed my program's comprehensive exam and the Praxis as well! Starting to research CF opportunities :)
Congratulations! I am excited for you😍
I’m rewatching to make sure you said “SUNDAY”??? 😮😅
Unfortunately, yes 😭
CFY here!!! The back to back is HARD. My clinic doesn’t offer a break besides lunch. Some days I see 8 patients back to back. I will say I’ve gotten used to it. But I can see myself leaving outpatient to go to the schools for a bit lighter schedule
I agree! And that is exhausting, I'm sorry 😭 It is hard out here!
Thank you for this! Keep posting ❤❤❤❤
This was so helpful as a current 2nd year TU student, thank you!
Hi! Thank you for the kind words, I am glad this was helpful! Congrats on almost being done 👏🏻It is so good to meet another TU speechie!
Great to see a view of what happens on a Sunday. Hope you enjoyed a grilled cheese evening
Appreciate the candid realities
Hi! You look so happy and fulfilled working with children 😊 I have some questions to ask since I'm exploring the field of SLP. What are the main differences between working in a clinic vs. schools? Pros and cons for both settings? Are there certain cases that you would mostly see in clinic than in a school? Would you ever switch to a different specialty/patient population like working with adults, working in a hospital setting, etc.? I am interested in working with children, and I really appreciate these videos! I still need to watch more of your vids haha 😆Thank you for sharing your journey in this field 💖
Hey Melanie!! You are so sweet, thank you 🥰 I am happy you enjoy these! So far in my clinic, I have seen a lot of sensory/autism kiddos and early intervention! Only a handful of articulation kiddos. And for schools, the caseload depends on how old your kids are and the type of school :) 1) School pros: if you are working for the district you will get: better benefits, a better work shift (typically out by 3 pm), summer off if you want, you make your own schedule of when you see the kiddos, you might have a high caseload but you can group kids to make it easier, salary over hourly School cons: likely lower pay, a lot of documentation, many meetings, you will do things out of your field (bus duty, etc), can be hard if teachers are rude and don't like when you take kids out of class 2) Clinic pros: 1:1 sessions, likely higher pay, potential for more training and help from other slps working with you Clinic cons: less benefits, some won't pay you if a client cancels, high caseload, more evals, long days (most clinics close around 6 pm) I personally would not switch populations simply because I feel more comfortable with kids and I prefer that caseload over stroke, dysphagia, etc! Let me know if you have more questions! I appreciate your comments ☺
@@YourLocalSpeechie Thank you so much for answering my questions! 💖I really appreciate it! I'll take note of these☺ I hope you're doing well and have a wonderful rest of your week 💖

Hi, thanks for the video! I’m currently in my first semester of grad school and reconsidering the career…wondering if I can dm/email you some questions?
I am always here to talk! I am sorry you are having mixed feelings, but congratulations on graduate school ☺ I will send you my old student email so I don't publish my personal email out here but it's twach1@students.towson.edu.

AW thank you Stephanie! 🥰 I am so glad the honesty and transparency was taken well.
Thank you for sharing!! I just started graduate school in SLP two weeks ago - I know its going to be a crazy ride ahead!
Of course! Congratulations on grad school ☺ You'll do great!
Hi! It was interesting hearing you talk about your experiences from undergrad. I've always been interested in learning about other CSD/SLPs experiences from their undergrad. My undergrad program didn't have a GPA requirement, nor did I have to apply to be accepted into their program. I just switched my major and went into the program blind. I didn't have a 3.5 GPA when I started. I was a B-student! If my undergrad program HAD a GPA requirement, I would have been denied or removed. I would have pursued special education or early childhood studies and applied as an out-of-field student. Taking SLP courses during undergrad was stressful. Some professors contributed to the stressful atmosphere for the students. It was hard to not compare myself to my peers who did better than me. I wondered back then if I was in the right major because I didn't get many As back then. I've come a long way from my undergrad days. I'm on my second year of grad school in a part-time program! I finish up next summer. Nice video :)
I loved hearing your story! It sounds similar to mine, how I was the B student also and the first time I got denied for the undergrad program I was going to pursue early childhood studies :) It is great to see where you are now, congrats on being in the second year! Almost done 👏🏻👏🏻 Can't wait to see where you go after grad school!
Hi! What do you use to make your Telehealth slides?
Hi! I use google slides + a bunch of transparent gifs :) I usually find cute simple backgrounds for the slides in google images also! I have another video on my channel from when I made my telehealth slides a year ago and I follow the same plan now, that video is more in depth ☺ Great question!
Hi! I'm wrapping up my clinic placement at a pediatric private clinic for grad school! I've enjoyed it so much and I'm definitely interested in pursuing my CFY next year at a peds private practice :)
Hi Elizabeth! Yay, that's great! Congratulations on almost finishing school also ☺ If you have any questions about the setting and my thoughts so far just let me know!
@@YourLocalSpeechie I definitely will! :)
Hey bestie already in love with ur videos just subscribed hope we can be friends 🥺💗
Aw thank you so much! Of course! ☺
Hiiii how are you feeling about this career path at this point ?:) thank you sunshine!
Hi! There is so much that goes with it that we never discussed during graduate school, so there are pros and cons for sure :) I am feeling okay right now, but of course I still feel like I don't know what I am doing and with that comes negative feelings at work, but I have heard that a majority of speechies grow their clinic skills stILL for a few years after graduating, so I know with confidence and time I will feel better!
This was sooo helpful. Thank you 😊 I was so confused about this whole process. Good luck with your CFY!
I am so glad it helped out! Thank you so much and good luck with the process 😊
Thank yo so much for this video. I am currently in the process of interviews.
That's what I do it for, I am that you enjoyed this video ☺ Good luck with the interviews!!
Would love for tips on how you studied! Did you take any notes??
Good question! I mainly studied from my Quizlet folders that I have made for my classes throughout the years :) I added links to the Praxis folders I studied from in the bio as well! I never really focus on taking notes since I already did during the program!
this is so helpful and wonderful to hear about. I love your ideas about self advocacy and taking time for yourself. It's so important and inspiring to hear, thank you for your video! :)) hope you are doing well and good luck with everything. also u are super pretty btw !! :D
Thank you so much, Kate! You are so nice 🥺 I am happy to hear that you enjoyed this topic!
omg thanks for the quizlet shoutout!! haha congrats on passing :)
Your quizlet was a savior during those times 🙏🏻 Thank you <3 Same to you, we did it!!
Thank you SO much for the quizlets! I’m a first year student but still saving this because it’ll come sooner than I think😅 but in good news, my university announced that if we have a passing grade on the praxis we don’t have to take the comps!
Of course! I know I was so stressed trying to figure out how to study without the books but I felt like I was able to study a good amount of information from the quizlets ☺️ I agree also, time goes by sooo quick in grad school! You're gonna do great, it'll be so nice to skip those comps 🙏🏻
Hey I worked at my public library (reference desk). We had a resource called learning express. Learning express had practice test from act, gre, to the SLP praxis. If you use this resource they will ask u which mode would you like to take the test (simulation, learning, study). For the learning and study mode they corrected your answer as you went through the test and they give you an explanation why all the answers correct or wrong. I'm just passing the info along. This is a shorten explanation, but if you want more details, just ask 😊 for any future clinicians I'm happy you passed
Hi there, are you taking praxis as an undergrad student? Or are you currently in grad school? I’m an undergrad student and would like to know when should I start looking to enrolling in praxis exam.
Hi! I am a second-year graduate student in an SLP program. I do not recommend taking the Praxis in your undergraduate years because you will not have gone through all the classes and academic experience yet for the test. I took my Praxis early for my second year but it is recommended to take the Praxis before you graduate from grad school.
@@YourLocalSpeechie Thank you for replying. Thank you so much for valuable information!
@@sairaestherthomas9421 Of course! Let me know if you have any other questions ☺️
