August Art Vlog: How I Deal With Art Block & Finding Your Creative Spark✹✹
Art block can be hard to deal with, but sometimes its best to take a step back and give yourself space to create. I can't wait to get started... I'm thinking the grass piece is going to be first but we'll have to see.

    Cool idea the playing with Photoshop; i do find to be true that some good ideas can come from setting limitations, forcing to select certain things, working with them, see what comes to mind now that there are things to guide from

    • @kghstudio
      @kghstudio Місяць тому

      That’s exactly it, when you’re overwhelmed with choices it’s hard to narrow it down to a final composition. With photoshop it doesn’t feel as final, so it’s easier to experiment even though you’re limiting yourself to photos.

    if you use the fence on that circular saw, you dont need to mark the whole board, and the cut will be more consistant, which i guess isnt a big deal, but it'll still make it easier to cut. edit: Puppy!!!!

    I started making my own stretcher bars exactly the same as you showed. I thought I was the only one who thought of it. The first ones I used a circular saw and then a friend gifted me with a real table saw. Then I purchased a cheap electric miter saw. So now the process is a bit more easier. I always paint on a pre-stretched canvas. I have fears of paint cracking or damaging my finished painting while stretching it.

    • @kghstudio
      @kghstudio 3 місяці тому

      Yes, I feel like I’m crazy sometimes for doing it this way but I’m just working with what I have. Makes me happy to hear other people have gone through the same thing. Maybe one day, when I declutter the studio, I’ll get myself a table saw. But for working on unstretched canvas, I actually really love it. I feel like it gives me a lot more freedom to experiment. The pressure just isn’t there the same way a stretched canvas is! I’ve never had them crack on me, so let’s hope it stays that way 🤞🏻

    • @ltwig476
      @ltwig476 3 місяці тому

      @@kghstudio Iv'e never felt pressured by the stretched canvas, except the pressure of locking in the bottom corners. Iv'e always been intrigued by the freedom of running the painting off the edges, it definitely has it's advantages. Most compositions require at least the bottom corners being locked in. I'm not sure how I would deal with that, while running off the entire canvas. Someday I will likely learn. I hope to soon move my studio into a larger space with much greater hight. Then I can set up for wall hangings. When planning a new studio, you either do it up right or be let down for your effort. So the investment is always much more than you imagined. That's the only thing holding me back now. I love your work. It has freedom written all over!

    Thank you SO much for sharing your experience! Your stories do a great job of solidifying why I have been a little afraid of these higher-end traditional art markets. I spent a few solid years working as a curator and working up to a few big solo shows. After those didnt lead to success i just stopped making for awhile to figure out what i really valued and how to make a more sustainable practice. I've been testing out Makers and Craft markets lately and am pretty excited about the community over there. Selling prints of paintings is helping me have a conversation about classism when people are surprised to see me not exhibiting in a traditional gallery.

      Thank you for watching I’m glad you enjoyed! It’s so important to take the time to figure out where your art sit. I’m still at the stage in my career where I am just throwing things out and seeing what sticks. Maker and craft markets seem like a great space to be in, and I’ve only ever heard good things. It might be something I look into next time. Classism is a huge play in the art world so I definitely appreciate where you’re coming from!

    I think I would only do an art fair if I had a bunch of reproductions of my art to sell. A friend of mine does art fairs and he makes greeting cards, magnets, and small prints of his art, and some jewelry and other little trinkets that he paints, as well as selling his big paintings. He doesn’t sell many, of why, of the big paintings at these fairs. It’s mostly people buying the greeting cards and magnets and trinkets. Most people are just there to look, but if they can find someone selling things for just a few dollars, they don’t hesitate to buy those. It’s worth it to him because after all of the costs he usually grosses about a thousand dollars.

    • @kghstudio
      @kghstudio 4 місяці тому

      Such a good point, prints are definitely the way to go. The fair I was in doesn’t allow prints, and are really specific about how your booth is set-up. They want to be viewed as a hired end market, which just makes it hard to make a profit from. I completely agree though, most people are just there to look or to purchase something small.
