I hear people say that we need a temple in order to keep this correctly. But this commandment was given when they were in the wilderness and they didn't have a temple. They had the tent meeting of appointment. The question why or how this is supposed to be done today should be seriously questioned. It appears we only make excuses rooted in our own man made traditions that now have more weight than Torah. Thanks for sharing.

You see what I see. In the wilderness, they had Aaron and what we can call the traveling temple. The Torah is the law, we either follow it or do not.

A lot to think about and reflect on in Debarim 28. It seems we we think in a them or us frame of mind, but there is a lot of that playing out in our lives daily today and has been for a long time. Depending on where you are at least many of us are not openly/literally under a siege. There are so many things happening that cannot be seen that are a siege. This should penetrate our hearts and minds and call us back. Thank you for sharing. Shabbat Shalom! I am enjoying listening and reading along with you.

You are absolutely right. We live under siege every single day, be it from the forces of mankind, the forces of our own inclinations, or the forces of unseen spiritual enemies.

12 is a very significant number to the universe as a whole. We count in base 10 because of the digits on our hands, but we could count in base 12 on our digits as well (each finger segment on one hand excluding the thumb as the counter) and it would be a more universal counting system. Some of the most important groups are counted in 12. It's also a reason why 13 is consider such bad fate, for it is the odd man out considering a 12.

So the language can suggest that the raven may have made many, many treks out before it finally did not. One reason could be that raven can eat carrion and will land on dead things (even rotten sea creatures on surface). It can make much longer flights (up to 2 or so days) than the dove and still yet return. If the raven finally does not return, there must be habitable land in that direction, but it may be far. The dove feeds on seeds and insect primarily. It needs trees and build a nest and will not perch on dead things. I read it as basically the broad shot and then narrowing in. You would expect both to return over time no matter what because their mate is still on the ark, but the raven could stay away long enough that dove could make all of its trips before needing to return. Tthere is probably also a connotation there of the raven symbolizing death and the unclean while the dove symbolizes life and the clean, but these are practical reasons I'm laying out).

    • @ShmuelMoshe

Those reasons make perfect sense. Excellent interpretation.

I've always, peronslally, interpreted Eve being the mother of all that is living as a position of authority in the same way that her husband is also the steward of the lands and what lay upon them, not the implication that all humans were specifically birthed from her and her generations. For the position is also the mother of birds and trees, yet they do not come from her body. Which, I think that interpretation gives even more weight to the generations that follow from them specifically.

Lot and Abraham trying to save as many people as they could was great; I really liked the bargaining scene. Is it intended to be humorous? It kind of felt that way to me.

This sort of back and forth is kind of common in historical negotiations between a servant and king. It's a really grave situation but the idea of saying "Yes" and then upping the request every time with even more self-admonishment or whatnot is definitely funny from the right perspective.
