Dear Collector, This Is How You NOT Collect Art!|Art Studio Vlog
Are you thinking about how to collect art or already building your art collection? In this video, I’m sharing a real-life story that every art collector-and artist-should hear. A collector purchased an original painting but later discovered the artist had duplicated the piece, sparking questions about copyrights, intellectual property, and what rights collectors and artists actually have.
Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of this situation. If you’re buying art, do you own just the physical painting, or do you also own the rights to reproduce it? Spoiler: it’s more complicated than you think. As an artist myself, I know how important it is to protect our creative work, but it’s equally important for collectors to understand what they’re investing in. In this video, I break down the difference between owning an artwork and owning the rights to the artwork, so you can navigate the art world with confidence.
We’ll talk about copyright, intellectual property, and how these concepts affect both the artist and the collector. Whether you’re new to collecting or already have a few pieces hanging on your walls, this video will give you the tools to avoid misunderstandings and ensure you’re respecting both your rights and the artist’s.
So grab a coffee, and let’s have an honest conversation about how to collect art while understanding the bigger picture (pun intended!). Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and leave your thoughts in the comments below. Let’s keep the conversation going-because knowing your rights and supporting artists is the key to building a meaningful art collection.

50% is industry standard
Yes, that is what I hear a lot. 50 percent is sen as the norm.
@@mcjstudioart Yeh, its a good way to make money in the long term.
Great video. I worked in a variety of galleries over the years, and 50% was the industry norm for commercial for-profit galleries. Now in those galleries we were often extending 20% discounts to interior designers and other collectors and that was taken off the galleries side. The shadiest part was that we would often sell work from the inventory and were told to hold off on paying the artist because we had bills to pay. Artists who were local and stopped by frequently had more luck getting paid as sales happened as were artists who were having a solo show at the time. Additionally those galleries had extremely low attendance. No one came in the gallery to view the art. Small non-profit galleries typically take 35% commission and promise “exposure”. I’ve worked there too and they also have extremely low attendance with few sales since their audience tends to be other artists. Now as a professional artist I’m cutting back exhibitions. Paying for the application, shipping, all for the hopes of sales. No Way! I need to love the organization, be promised at least a link to my website from theres to improve my SEO and get paid to exhibit. Which is possible I’ve had multiple venues pay me to exhibit. I was recently offered an exhibit opportunity and I said I needed to be paid and they said “no problem”……I just needed to ask.
Proud of you for your fortitude!!!
Thank you, I appreciate it :)
Congrats on the new studio! That's super exciting 🥳 I can definitely relate to self-sabotage manifesting as doing everything else but the art- social media being one, for sure. I got a UA-cam break coming up for June. My only goals then our camping & creating 🎨🌲 Love the illustration, welcome back!💕
Thank you ❤. Enjoy the break. I do believe that breaks should be normal. It really brings that energy back that we artists need.
@@mcjstudioart Absolutely! 💯
This is amazing
Thank you, enjoyed doing it!
Great conversation. See u soon

Hey sis! New subscriber!
Hey welcome and thank you.
Loved this conversation! Totally agree about representation...and not appropriation. "Show up with your credit card, debit, dollars, euros, yins..." YAAASSS, preach!! Congrats on 100 subbies, many more hundreds to come 🙌🏾✨️
Yaasss, so happy for the 100 subbies. Representing all the way and unapologetically lol.
I does have same problem when taking photos of my art from my phone.....your art is beautiful
Hey! Yeah, taking shots is a whole different task that really takes time to understand. Sometimes it is as simple as upgrading your equipment or photographing in daylight more and practice. Thank you for compliment.
