SCHUBERT: Death and the Maiden (1824)
Schubert began 1824 with a plan to write a set of three string quartets.
During this time, he famously wrote:
“I feel myself to be the most unfortunate, the most miserable being in the world. Think of a man whose health will never be right again, and who from despair over the fact makes it worse instead of better, think of a man, I say, whose splendid hopes have come to naught, to whom the happiness of love and friendship offers nothing but acutest pain, whose enthusiasm (at least, the inspiring kind) for the Beautiful threatens to disappear, and ask yourself whether he isn’t a miserable, unfortunate fellow.
My peace is gone, my heart is heavy,
I find it never, nevermore…
so might I sing every day, since each night when I go to sleep I hope never again to wake, and each morning merely reminds me of the misery of yesterday.”
The middle line (“My peace….”) is a quote from Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel, a song Schubert had set to text from Goethe’s Faust as a teenager. We’ll hear Schubert quote himself again tonight, as he uses a portion of the theme from his song Death and the Maiden as the basis for the second movement of his Quartet in D minor.
Schubert, perhaps more than any other composer, juxtaposes ethereal music of sublime tenderness with that of extreme harshness, even violence. His vision of beauty and peace is vividly painted in his lyrical moments and his music clearly contains the qualities he so yearned for (beauty, the “happiness of love and friendship”), yet it often seems slightly removed: an ideal fervently wished for but never attained.

Seriously excellent performance of this. It may become my favorite. The quality of sound and the sensitive technique without losing that momentum in the piece, is superbly executed. You can feel the Beethoven spirit in the playing of this Schubert piece. Lots of Passion ❤

Very nice ending where the middle voices thicken the texture as the melody reaches to a higher tessitura. Nice treatment of the contrabass. Probably my favorite instrument in an orquestra. It provides deep resonance to the harmony that is very satisfying.

San Diego is so fortunate to have musical (and other) arts organizations like Art of Elan, SD Symphony, SD Opera, Mostly Mozart, LJMS (and others) that did not just lie down and give up this year, but still brought inspiration and comfort to so many! A thousand thanks to you all ... and here's hoping that 2021 will develop into a year of recovery for the arts and for society.

I definitely think your two young performance artists are ready for the stage. Forget about hiring a sitter for the next Art of Elan museum concert. Just bring them along and give them a few props and let them go. They will entrance your audiences and give another dimension to music performance.

Undone was commissioned by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) and was premiered by the JACK and Arditti Quartets at the 2017 Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik. It began as an experiment with spatial arrangement of a string octet. My initial aim was to create a work using only acoustic sound that would achieve conditions similar to those I have attained in other pieces that rely on digital signal processing and amplification. Seven performers physically located around the hall spatialize, resonate, and echo (in a variety of ways) the music first played by the principal violinist. But while composing the piece, I became increasingly distracted and dismayed by political developments in the United States and Europe, and the work became much more than a formal exercise in acoustic spatialization. My grandfather came to America in 1902 when he was 20 years old, leaving behind his parents and twelve brothers and sisters, most of whom were later murdered during the Holocaust. The synagogue where he had his bar mitzvah was almost completely burned; today, one remaining wall has been integrated into a secular building in a town that is devoid of Jews. Yet because the United States accepted him as an immigrant, my grandfather was able to survive, worship freely, start a small business, and raise a family. Although neither he nor my father ever made much money, I was able to get an excellent education and have enjoyed a comfortable life with many extraordinary opportunities - including this one - to do what I love most: make music. To witness my country elect a racist president and close its doors to refugees, and to read about the rise of right-wing nationalism in Germany and other European countries, has been deeply troubling. As I composed the piece, my thoughts and emotions about my family’s past and contemporary events inevitably began to make their way into my music. Drawing on memories of my own bar mitzvah ceremony, I chose to incorporate references to Ashkenazi haftarah incantation (the way 13 year olds chant sacred texts during their bar mitzvah) to honor my deceased family members. These references, along with the more restrained material from earlier in the piece, yield and ultimately give way to the despair that I and so many others feel about our present geopolitical moment.

Add to this that Stephen Miller is of Jewish extraction, and he was channeling Roy Cohn. The world is upside down. Your music resonates, - even more so with those gallery wall echoes.
