In the 1980's the road I drove from Richard's Bay to Johannesburg used to run right through the outskirts of the town. I drove up and down every week. One Saturday morning around 1 I was on the final leg returning to Johannesburg. I had a 325iS BMW and went trough a lone speed trap there at a speed I cannot post here. The traffic official just shook his head, told me he does not even have a guide in his fine book for that speed, told me to drive carefully (not slower) and wished me the best of luck. I miss the days when I was younger and the world more free than it is today.

Also an olympic size swimming pool at Sasolburg is named after the golden girl of swimming namely PENNY HEYNS. Regular championships take place there. SASOL abbreviation of the afrikaans "Suid Afrikaanse Steenkool en Olie Maatskappy."

Named after commandant Adriaan Hendrik Stander of the farm Grootverlangen on which Standerton was established. Just outside Standerton on the Bethal road is the Grootdraai dam. This dam was specially built to supply water to SASOL 2&3 at Secunda via a canal to a dam (Trichardtsfontein) at Trichardt. The Trichardtsfontein dam was enlarged. It was previously a much smaller dam that supplied water for steam locomotives at Trichardt. Mayor Queen Radebe-Khumalo ordered (2008) the destruction of the Great Trek memorial (because it means nothing) but a court order reversed it for restoration. Was it done? I do not know that . . . During 1975 a huge flooding of Standerton took place. In your video at 24:00 is where the water reached. Houses and the mosque were under water. Motor boats enjoyed the streets ignoring the red lights of robots!!! Building of the Grootdraai dam reduced flooding but I understand it still happened afterwards. Great to see how speed humps and potholes can reduce speed . . .

We travelled 300km one way to visit the Park, bringing a visitor from America along. That was in 1998. As soon as our braai fire was lit, a minibus with youths stopped and twenty-odd guys spilled out, very noisily, and emptied two large bins fklled with cans of beer. They were rowdy, rude and our day was spoiled. We never visited our regular old haunt again.
