What exactly is Ryan supposed to earn? He didn't ask to be saved. He wanted to help his unit to defend the bridge and later he did exactly that. Two Miller's men were lost due to someone's stupidity (Caparzo foolishly tried to carry that little girl and died. Miller decided to take out the machine gun nest in the middle of nowhere in the most retarded way possible and thus their only medic died.). Since Miller felt obligated to attack some random machine gun nest in the middle of nowhere, he should have felt obligated to defend this bridge in order to help to win the war. Yes, Miller was taking care of Ryan during the final battle and Ryan let him do that, because Miller said it's non-negotiable. But Miller almost got Ryan killed when he told him to stay put in the crater only to get almost shot by the tank.

I remember first version of this movie from 1997 whwere Cpt Miller gives medal of honnor to Ryan and say "Earn This". Later in ending scene Ryan left that medal on his grave. But I cant find that scene anywere on intternet.
