Very posh for a gorbals boy, but the games were played by older boys in my youth. I remember it led to lots of fights as they usually had a few bottles lanliq wine.

This is superb !. I couldnt believe it when told we were to use a 1954 film as part of our 1974 english pre-lims, I thought it was too out-dated but very quickly changed my mind after watching it !. It's never out of my top 10 favourite films !

I have many films I'm really fond of but I think Hobson's Choice is my favourite! The screenplay and accompanying music along the counter of shoes is spot on at the very beginning. 3 actors were quite young then but appeared much older, Tubby, Albert Prosser and the Scots doctor, great character actors. The script was much better even than the stage play. My only grouse, Mrs. Figgins and Alice Hobson are cockneys and being a cockney, I can hear it each time. I think John Mills was wonderful in this, his facial expressions were spot on unyet he is better known for war films, I think. Loved listening to someone who was involved in it. Thankyou! ❤ XXX

Thank you so much for posting, I grew up on the estate Norah mentions in the film. I remember Diggles from the 70s & very early 80s. Her assessment of its decline is spot on. This is a absolute gem for any person from Whitefield and remembers the shop 👍👍

Well this was posted over 10 years ago so people have moved on and perhaps no one is interested now but here goes. I left school aged 15 in 1965, I had studied the violin and was set to go to the college of music in Manchester when l was 17. So unlike a lot of my friends who went into apprenticeships, I decided to go into the cotton mills, the money was three or four times what my apprentice friends could earn (for the first few years anyway! There were plenty of working cotton mills in the Oldham area then, my mum had worked mostly in mills and she was working as a cotton spinner in the ring room at Moorfield in Shaw Oldham. I left school on Friday and started working on the Monday, I worked on the top floor in the winding room, every one of the winders were women and they were lovely people. The mill overlooked the outside market and every Thursday (pay-day I think), at dinner time the ladies would do some shopping. Once work resumed, the winders would give me toffees/sweets, I was quite small for my age then and they just liked to mother me I guess. It was eerie when the machinery was shut down, the silence was deafening, the mill had a dining room/canteen and I had loved the meals that I think were subsidised. I worked there for about six months, jobs in the mills at that time seemed plentiful so purely because I could, I finished there and went to the Kent mill in Chadderton. Now I was a doffer in the ring room, unlike Pat I was not aware of any training classes, yes “stripping & grinding” for example was regarded as a specialised job, but most of the work was learned ‘on the job’. Over the next four years I worked on all the different floors of the mills there were lots of vacancies then so when I got bored I changed jobs. Here are the names of some of the mills that I worked 1965-1969, Moorfield,, Kent, Manor, Roy, Asia (the cotton chamber one shift)! Eli Lees Weaving shed Greenacres Road Oldham, Ramsey dye-house Fields New Road. Some of these several times because they were near my home. Motorcycles and girls came along and I never did go to Music college. In 1969 I joined British Railways working with my dad at Hollinwood p-way, in 1979 I trained as an URFDO.

Delighted to hear Richard ‘s account of the early resettlements. I’m watching as a 2nd generation HK Hakka girl. My sister’s marital family’s village in Shatin was moved only several hundred yards to make way for the reclaimed land. Shatin means Sandy Fields. But as her in-laws got a large new 3 storey house, it didn’t matter there was a massive flyover going past their new house! My own village further inland is close to the China border. Village is still on same spot. But tiny bits of infertile farmland is slowly being reclaimed. Last one was for another flyover - a brand new route from village to HK city or even to China.

The Gorbals is now unrecognizable from its hey-day - a misnomer if ever there was one . The Gorbals originaĺly housed professionals and well to do families during the 19th century but when the buildings fell into disrepair the wealthy families moved out and the poor moved in - gentrification in reverse . Now it has come complete cycle .

The written commentary is very annoying as the person writing has not got a proper grasp of the English language or what is being said. The commentary really detracts from the interview which is interesting. Get rid of the ignorant commentary it would be an improvement.

Hi Marlene. When I uploaded this, I put on a well edited accurate sequence of subtitles. Unfortunately since then You Tube has changed various addons, and the original subtitles have been lost. You were watching these dreadful computer generated subtitles which are often confusing and very inaccurate. They can easily be switched off using the subtitle tool on the tool bar.
