    I mowed a 6 1/2 acre property a few years ago for a friend that looked like what you mowed. He had a Simplicity zero turn and it kept breaking the deck belt trying to knock it down. I mowed every bit of it with my 42" John Deere LA120. I went through two 6 gallon cans of gas but I got it done. Wish Id had my Scag zero turn at that time. It would have been so much better Im sure. This reminds me of what I had to tackle after a couple of years of not mowing my back fields. After purchasing the property, I concentrated on the just the yard around the house, but then noticed an increase in rodents (mice, ground hogs, etc.) so figured they were moving in and taking over in the back. It took several passes and consistent mowing over the years, but now have it in the same shape as my yard and no more rodents.

    Just my experience ,thick blades require more hp,just like a thick blade on a saw requires more push to cut.High lift blades gunk up the underside of the deck and wear much fasters because they pick up debri and dirt etc ,which wears everything on the underside of deck especially bad in sandy soil areas.

    • @BigSouthOutdoorsTV
      @BigSouthOutdoorsTV 7 днів тому

      Thanks for your thoughts. I've been in business for 25 years and I can tell you, high lift blades or no lift blades make no difference in cutting. When you pop that pto, there is what is called a built in buffer to keep the engine from stalling. Take a clutch apart and you'll see the evidence of it. The cluth is made to slip ever so slightly to prevent engine stall. The weight of the blades make virtually no difference once they are up to full speed. The extra 1.25 lbs or so don't make a hills worh of difference. Yes, high lift blades can stir up some dust, but, in this business, time is money. Idmuch rather change a set of blades rather than spend an extra 2 hours a day mowing because the blades don't have the proper lift to raise the grass to cut it properly. I have found that gunking up the under side of the deck isnt caused by the blade you use, but by cutting wet grass. Wet grass sticks to the deck shell and if you do not clean it farily quickly, it hardens and becomes difficult to clean unless you scrape it. I have experimented with x-blades also. I've used high lift blades, high lift and low lift, and I've even used high lift and gator blades. BY FAR, the gator blade was the worst. They minced up the clippings and they stuck to the deck in layers so hard, it was like trying to bust concrete off the inside of a concrete mixer. I say that because I used to drive a concrete mixer. High ift blades are, BY FAR the best I've used. They cut very efficiently, last longer, and keep the underside of the deck cleaner.

      You will notice the difference between 3/8 thick and 1/4 inch thick blades on a 6 ft shredder in Bermuda grass with my old 4840. Thickness does matter even metal cut off blades 3/32 cut faster with less pressure than 1/8 thick.Hell man a thin sharp blade just takes less effort to slice with than a sharp thick blade.Even weedeater string is a example of thick vs thin and then there is the other proposition that a rotary blade cuts at the very tip and he rest of that sharpened leading edge just cleans up some.Mister I have been farming and cutting grass for 75 years,starting with reel type mowers. Rotary mower blades are designed with planned obsolescence in mind.I hard surface all my blades with a welder and triple the life of them.

    • @BigSouthOutdoorsTV
      @BigSouthOutdoorsTV 9 днів тому

      @bobbean4702 Thanks for watching. I've never thought of Florida as being sandy. I guess I was mistaken. We have sandy "spots," but most of this area is either red clay of loamy soil from decades of farming. More to the point, yes, sandy soils will eat blades, but that's not the case here. I took one of the blades to a metallurgist and had it tested. According to him, they had almost no carbon in them. His opinion was it (that steel) should've never been used to make mower blades.

    I have a similar model maybe 2 yrs older. Piece of junk. I have had many problems, but worst is that the drive belt just pops off. Never breaks, just pops off, and it just stops. Blades still turn, but not moving. Sounds like no big deal, right. Wrong, the machine has to be almost completely disassembled. $400 each time for a dealer to put the belt back on. I asked, is this common. The mechanic says yes happens all the time on this model. Also, brakes fell off as well as other random bolts. Found on brake, and was able to reinstall it. The other one got chopped in half. So it cost about $100 for a very small piece of cast alloy (aluminum). So one brake will have to do me, until i can get rid of the junk ikon 54 Ariens.

    I bought one of these last year when they became available and have mowed my own yard with it over the last two seasons. It has 18 hours on the clock and the deck hanger bracket has broken off the same way that yours did. The seat cover has also come off because it is too small as well, and one of the arm rests is bent. I guess I will expect it to continue to deteriorate after seeing this video. Thanks for the info.

      @frequentfrenzied although I have no way to change it, I am sorry for your problems. This machine has to be one of the worst built mowers on the market. They really should take it off the market.

    hey Brian I bought a gravely zt hd 52 brand new I hit and chopped a piece of tree root and a couple days later I had some vibration with deck on so I looked at my discharge spindle as that was the blade that got it it's there laser edge blades not there standard blades I know you run copperhead blades are the slightly arched like mine as the dealer told me a strait blade would cut lower never heard that before as he also has the.oregon super highlight blades had um on a lesco 48 man were the brutal but my dealer tells me the only blades i can run is the factory blades or laser edge ive built mowers for years ive never heard such a thing like that have you seems a little odd to me but let me know what your dealer told you it seems wierd that im limited to only two different blades or mulching with ill never do i hate it and chute blockers are pointless but will be putting suspension seat on in spring they have suspension front casters but only good for slow and med speed $400.00 for.those i cant see wasting money on them i think the seat will be just fine at $710.00 ouch but worth the comfort my tow hitch had to nicks taken out of it by my dump trailer think I'll by another and drill hole for a 1/7/8 ball and put a coupling on dump trailer even if she has to be cut and rewelded should solve the problem bought biggest one at tractor supply hauls 1200 lbs I think but the last two times it damaged my hitch by pealing and indenting the plate steel still works no problem but it shouldn't be doing that right off the bat she's only got 24.9 hrs on her tracking is a little off have to check tires first but dealer will have to adjust levers etc but this thing is a Sherman tank looked at ferris 500s with suspension and a buddy I know said no difference from one to another he's got a snapper pro and a ferris could feel any difference at all so I said well I guess it'll be a gravely bigger gas tank same tranny's 3100s 7guage x factor 3 deck 8mph f 4mph rev she said no 60 it's to big of course then she says after it's to late oh I thought you would have bought the 60 and she kept saying not in my yard to big yah then she said oh go get it then now it's to late of course but damn thankful I got it would have liked the Xtra trim room on left side but it was .my coin and yet she tells me they done got some nerve don't they the Italian comes out all the time can't figure were the German in her is likes to point the finger and I do all the back breaking I think she needs to learn a lesson the hard way by getting her hands dirty what do you think ol buddy

    They say them cub cadets ZT with the steering wheels do hills no problem. They pricey though. Good stuff.

      @JC-tm6wh Thanks for watching. My dealer sales those Cub mowers. I've never operated one, but by the looks of them, I'd have to agree with you.
