Can I take red colour pen to write gratitude journal ?
Can I write gratitude journal for one year ?
Yes :) You can write for any length of time you’d like!
@@ShirleyHealthy Thank you ☺️
you get any free time in medical school or just study all-day?
I’d say I have quite a lot of free time nowadays now that I’m a 4th year, which is so nice :) First few months of med school was a bit of a rough transition, so it was mainly study all day. It’s also study all day a couple weeks / couple months before big exams, depending on the exam, but there’s definitely time to enjoy life outside of medicine! As showcased by the video ahaha thanks for commenting :)
yay! good times ❤
Thanks to you :’)
So cool to see this snippet of med school! :)

Thanks ^_^
What a great first rotation! Your attending really can change your whole perspective on a specialty :o
Yes, it's kind of like that one teacher who teaches a subject you don't care for in the most interesting way!
Congrats and what a refreshing channel! Low stats, straight to the point, didn't ramble on about yourself for 30 minutes. I'll be following along! The only thing that would have made this video more helpful is mentioning the dates you submitted applications and the dates you heard back.
Hey, thanks for watching and subscribing :) Looking back through my emails / memories, here are the dates: For AMCAS: - 6/19/2019 - AMCAS transcript received - 7/4/2019 - AMCAS submitted - 8/5/2019 - AMCAS verified - 3/20/2020 - First and only MD interview invite - 5/5/2020 - MD acceptance For AACOMAS: - 6/14/2019 - AACOMAS transcript received - 6/30/2019 - AACOMAS submitted - 7/3/2019 - AACOMAS verified - 7/29/2019 - First DO interview invite - 9/2019 - First DO acceptance (different school than the first interview; can't find exact date of acceptance) I definitely recommend submitting your applications ASAP (but obviously don't rush and provide sloppy work). Hope that answers your question! Let me know if you have any others :)
@@ShirleyHealthy So helpful, thank you! So comforting to know that you can get acceptances off IIs even as late as March. I can stop neurotically freaking out at my zero IIs in July now 😅
LOL yeah, definitely no need to worry in July! Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about not hearing back from schools by a certain time because the vast majority will get back to you-just gotta be patient. It’s nerve-wracking but now it’s just a waiting game unfortunately 🙃 I recommend finding ways to preoccupy yourself in the meantime, preferably with something that would benefit your application if you have to re-apply. Not trying to discourage you or anything, but there are those with great stats who don’t get in and then there’s me, so sometimes it seems pretty random even though it’s not 😅 So always best to prepare for worst case scenario until you do get that first of hopefully many acceptances. Then you can go crazy and do whatever you want ahaha best of luck!
For credit card bonuses / rewards, you get more bang for your buck when trading for travel or otherwise through their rewards programs, so it’s better than to opt for cash
As always, thanks for your help Shirley!
My pleasure :)
This gives me hope.
I’m glad :) Best of luck when you apply!

I got a C+ in orgo 1 and I’m pretty sure I tanked Calc. Should I retake? What do you think
Hey there! Not sure what your definition of “tank” would be, but you have to retake anything C- or below for med schools. In terms of the C+, I would personally retake it just because Orgo II often requires a good foundation of Orgo I if I remember correctly. If your courses are different, then maybe just go through with Orgo II. But otherwise, retake it to not only get a better grade, but to ensure you’ve set yourself up to do well in Orgo II. However, don’t retake it until you’re sure you can get an A in the course. Otherwise, it doesn’t look good if you can’t do well in the course after seeing the material twice. Most importantly, determine why you didn’t do as well and work on addressing those issues before retaking it. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting a similar grade the second time. Best of luck!
In the spring of my freshman year, I dropped out of gen chem and it's lab and i got a c- in general bio 1. I took just gen chem this semester and i got a c+. Now I'm considering retaking gen bio 1 next semester lol. I really don't know what to do, and whether to just quit. I'm a bad studier.
Hey there! I'm not sure how your school works, so here are a few considerations: 1) First and foremost, throw out the term "bad studier." Don't identity with that. Instead, recognize that there are better study habits and techniques that you need to experiment with. What aspects of studying do you struggle with? If it's memorization, use Anki / flashcards. If it's test anxiety, take practice tests in a similar environment to the actual test and get plenty of rest before the test. If it's procrastination, rely on habits rather than motivation. So on and so forth--find out what doesn't work for you, and work on that. On a side note, if you have any sort of learning disability, public colleges are required to offer appropriate accommodations if that's something that would help you. 2) Have a plan in place for when you retake the course. Go to your professors' office hours, take advantage of any tutoring services your school offers (UA-cam videos are also a great resource). Review your old exams to find out where you struggled, and review those concepts before classes start so that you will have improved on these weak areas. 3) If Gen Bio 1 is part of a series you need to finish, but these courses don't stack on top of each other and require knowledge from previous courses (i.e. you can do well in Gen Bio 2 even if you didn't do well in Gen Bio 1 because one's human biology vs another one is environmental biology), then just proceed with Gen Bio 2 and give yourself time to review Gen Bio 1 info before retaking it again. If these courses do stack or you can't proceed to Gen Bio 2 if you don't get at least a C in Gen Bio 1, then spend part of winter break reviewing Gen Bio 1 material before retaking it next semester. In regards to quitting, that's entirely up to you. If you're willing to put in the work to improve your study habits, then having to retake a class or two won't jeopardize your chances of getting into medical school. However, if you aren't, then you have to decide what you'd rather do. Consult your academic advisor / friends and colleagues from any pre-med health organizations regarding their input as well. They may have more specific advice that pertains more so to your school / situation. Best of luck!
@@ShirleyHealthy Thanks for getting back to me. Right now I'm hovering at around a 3.5ish gpa overall. I definitely have issues with procrastination. I also generally don't know *how* to study, if that makes sense? Like I don't know if I should memorize, or just do practice questions. I think in Gen Chem it is way more practice questions, whereas in Bio is more vocab. Your recommendations are really good, I just wish I would be able to find practice tests that are actually realistic and mirror what exams will be like lol. The textbook questions are on the same concepts, but don't really mirror tests. And the concept questions on tests also tend to be kind of obscure, ie no really direct way to study for them. So if you know of any ways to fix procrastination , and find actual exam prep for the science pre reqs, please lmk :)
@@ShirleyHealthy Also your other tips are really good too, I think I am stuck on what I'm going to do in school in general. If medicine is what is best in my life, then I will absolutely pursue it, no matter how hard it is. I have a couple other careers in mind too though, like clinical psych, so its really just about determining which one is best for me. If I knew, that would make everything so much easier lol, cuz right now I feel like everything is in uncertainty. Maybe volunteering and seeing what I like most would help?
No problem! 3.5ish is pretty decent, and you have still time to raise it :) It's exactly as you said--it'll depend on which class you're taking, and which professor is teaching in terms of how you need to study. I've only taken a handful of classes that were purely memorization; most times, even if there's a good amount of memorization involved, understanding the WHY behind the material makes it easier to remember these concepts. For the class you're planning to retake, if it's with the same professor, you can thankfully just review your past tests and hopefully get a good idea from that. In terms of practice questions that mirror exam questions, those are generally fairly difficult to find. At least with my professors, I felt they combined various concepts in obscure ways that didn't exactly reflect what was taught. The main thing is making sure you understand all the concepts that ARE taught, as it makes it easier to work out problems no matter how they're phrased. My best advice would be to ask the TAs how they studied for exams--they're generally students that have done really well in the class, so getting an idea of how they did so can help. Most classes have quizzes / midterms before the final, so using those to gauge how your professor asks questions can help you form a better understanding of what'll be asked as well. And sometimes RateMyProfessor reviews let you know how best to study--you can also try to select a professor that matches your learning style if possible. In terms of procrastination, I would recommend reading / watching a video regarding forming good habits. I have one on my channel: ua-cam.com/video/pK671jkYjfQ/v-deo.html I also highly recommend checking out habit formation videos by Ali Abdaal, Thomas Frank, and Med School Insiders / Kevin Jubaal. They have great videos in general--Ali's and Kevin's are geared specifically for pre-meds as well. Gist of it is you want to optimize your environment (minimizing distractions, having everything you need to study set up ahead of time, determine a specific time and place and all the other necessary details that you'll need to fit it into your schedule, etc), and create a good cue and reward. Learn to rely on consistency, diligence, and habit formation rather than inspiration or willpower. As for determining what you want to do, shadowing / volunteering should give you a better idea. I personally don't subscribe to the idea of having only one calling in life--regardless of which career you select, there are people that love that field and make the best of it. Try to get more insight into the aspects of each field that aren't glamorous. Yes, medicine is great in terms of feeling like you're making a difference in others' lifes, continuous learning and focus on research and new discoveries, patient interactions, salaries, respect from others, etc. But there's a greal deal of burnout, depression, dissatisfaction with the amount of paperwork involved, dealing with insurance and prior authorizations, etc. I personally don't know much about clinical psych, so can't speak to that, but find out the pros and cons of each career you're considering. Remember that at the end of the day, life is what you make of it, and no matter what it seems like, you have the option to switch to another job if you're absolutely miserable in your current one. Hope that helps. Happy holidays!
approaching MSK. Our school calls it Skin, Bone, and Muscle so I guess we have Derm in there too.
Best of luck :) I think ours was called Structure and Function, so yours makes more sense LOL
I got a C in bios :((((
Turns out we gotta know more than the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell 🙃 It’s okay, hopefully this will be a learning experience!
GPA's are overrated .... there are over 1,000 applicants each year getting into medical school with a sub 3.0 GPA
It’s an important component of the application, but yes, it’s definitely possible to get in with a low GPA :)

Hi Shirley! Thanks for making this video! One question I had was regarding the letters of evaluation? Does the website require a minimum amount of rec letters? If so how many?
Hey! Each school varies in terms of what their specific requirements for letters of recommendation are. For specific requirements, you can look at this site: www.prospectivedoctor.com/letters-of-recommendation-do-medical-schools/ Not sure how updated that website is, so I'd recommend double checking each of your school's websites so that you can be sure you're meeting their requirements. Mainly, you'll want 2 letters from science professors, 1 from a non-science professor / extracurricular advisor, and 1 from a DO physician. You'll want to ensure quality > quantity. Don't ask for a letter of recommendation from someone who isn't certain they can write a strong one for you as that can actually hurt your chances. Best of luck applying!
@@ShirleyHealthy Thank you so much!!
I really love the new style of this vlog! Great job Shirley. Best of luck in your 2nd year ❤️

Coming back to reflect on 1st year as a 2nd year med student! Oh, how time flies . . . P.s. Apologies for the sound quality >.> Didn't realize how loud the AC at school was ahaha
thank you, I was trying to figure out what to write in my description area because AAMC loves stories, but AACOMAS seems so limited with 600 characters. I will definitely write in paragraphs but I love how simple everything was in yours.
Glad I could help :) The main goal is to have them understand what you did, what you learned, etc. so as long as you get that across, you'll be golden!
I’m so thankful for coming across this video. I was an idiot in high school and took so many dual credit classes that I did not care about at the time, so my GPA tanked. Now I’m going into sophomore year and I’m doing much better, but I always have that fear that my high school mistakes will screw me over for medical school :(
Hey, Niki! If you’re in an education system where you go directly to med school from high school, there’s still time to improve your GPA! If you’re from the US or another country where you go to medical school after college, then med schools don’t care about your high school performance. Either way, there’s always room for improvement and you’re not screwed!

Your information delivery is steady and concise. You would have made a great sales presenter if you went into business.
If only I wasn’t terrible at smooth talking 😂 Thanks for your comment though, I now have a backup plan in case med school doesn’t work out LOL
Love your videos! Please make one soon with mcat tips and strategies and how you studied for each section. Thanks.
Hey, Sarah! Thanks for commenting, and I'm glad you do :) Personally, I don't think I did all that well on anything other than CARS, so I recommend you look at videos of those who did: ua-cam.com/video/vH-7fjxgULQ/v-deo.html I can certainly make a video on CARS though. I also do have a section on general MCAT tips in my "10 Tips for Getting into US Medical School" video (it's time-stamped and based on others' strategies) that might be helpful for you though! In regards to how I studied: I didn't really stick to a plan because I was also working full-time and part-time and retaking some courses. I know some people try to stick to a schedule of what sections they cover when, so that might be a strategy you want to employ if you work well with structure, but I just winged it because I wouldn't have been able to keep up with that. So whenever I did have time over lunch breaks or over weekends, I'd just study as much of the Kaplan books as I could (I don't have any specific preference for Kaplan--those were just what my friend gave me for free). I tried focusing more on biochem since that makes up a greater proportion of the questions. Also, it can be expensive but I do highly recommend UWorld--you can purchase a shorter subscription right before your exam. I got pretty lucky with my score, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing what I did ahaha but I'll publish a future video regarding CARS!
Hey Shirley, I see that you used bullet points when writing in the description of your experiences. I assume adcoms don't care if its bullet point or paragraph form?
Hey! If you want to err on the side of caution, I'd recommend using paragraphs. Personally, I liked that bullet points were more concise (and therefore would allow you to include more responsiblities and tasks and such if you so choose) and easier to read. Essentially, less room for fluff as they're straight to the point. Neither format should be a deal-braker for adcoms though.
Hi Shirley, thanks for always being very transparent. I submitted my primary apps recently to 1 school to verify and studying for my MCAT to take later this summer. But I love to hear how you strategically built your school list to apply to and in hindsight whether you have anything that you could have changed. I'm pretty similar to you in terms of multiple C's and taking postbac in undergrad, so I love to hear from you about this to optimize my cycle and wallet. I have MSAR and I love to know what your tips are
Hey Penny! In terms of building my school list, my inability to apply to medical schools that required math, specific letters of recommendation (e.g. non-science LOR, LOR from department of my major, etc.), etc helped me narrow down my list as I didn't meet those requirements. Although not impossible to get into, schools with stats much higher than my own weren't ones I applied to either given that more schools = more money spent, and I'd rather focus on those for which I had a greater chance of being accepted. Then I narrowed my list down further via my own preferences, meaning I didn't apply to schools that had a religious affiliation, were in areas I didn't care to move to, had mission statements that didn't speak to me, etc. If I were back at the same stage where you are at now, there's nothing I would've changed personally. In regards to overall pre-med journey, the two things I would've changed were my major (didn't realize pre-meds could have non-science majors) and my study habits. In regards to asking what you yourself can change right now, if there's any way for you to prepare sooner and move up your MCAT date, that would be my one suggestion. It takes a few weeks to get your score, so that'll further delay your application. Ideally, you'd apply as soon as possible. However, if you won't feel prepared until later, best to keep the current date. Better to have a good MCAT score, and you've already submitted your primaries to one school, so your application should be verified in terms of GPA, and you'd be able to apply right away once you get your score back. Lastly, in terms of optimizing your wallet, I would check to see that your GPA falls within at least the 10th percentile of schools you apply to. It's great to have dream schools, but they're also a huge money sink considering the probability of acceptance given their past matriculation rates. For optimizing your cycle, focus solely on the MCAT for now, but once you're done with the test, take a small break and then dive right into pre-writing secondaries and preparing for interviews. Alright, very long answer ahaha hope that helped!
@@ShirleyHealthy these definitely helped! Thank you for your thorough response! It is super duper appreciated!! ❤❤ I hope you enjoy some time off this summer and looking forward to seeing your updates and success.
Hey there, very informative video. When did you submit your application ? What would be an ideal month to apply.
Hey, Murtuza! Glad you found it helpful :) I submitted my application 6/30, and my coursework was verified 7/3. The ideal month to apply would be whenever the application first opens. Barring that, the sooner you apply, the better. Best of luck!
That CARS score is an actual dream haha 😅
Had to make up for the others :') LOL
