Using my woodworking projects to speak about bigger issues, and I don't care if you find it offensive
I Hope I'm WRONG About Smartphone Bans
Teachers, are you losing control of your classrooms to the insidious distraction of smartphones? Are your carefully crafted lessons drowned out by the mindless scrolling of social media? This isn't some cutesy trend, it's an educational crisis.
In this video, I'll cut through the fluff and get down to brass tacks. We'll explore battle-tested strategies to eradicate the smartphone menace from your classroom. We're talking concrete tactics, not participation trophies.

In this video, I take you along for the (often hilarious) journey of building a beautiful cedar screen door from scratch! Spoiler alert: there were mistakes. Lots of them. From miscuts to questionable joinery choices, this project definitely tested my patience. But hey, that's the beauty of DIY, right? You learn as you go, and sometimes those lessons come in the form of rerouting a board or two...

best alternative to epoxy for inlay - cheap, easy, fast

If you're into woodworking, you're probably familiar with epoxy as a popular material for filling gaps and inlay work. However, there's a natural alternative that's gaining popularity in the woodworking community - baking soda! Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a versatile material that can be used in a variety of woodworking applications, including inlay work. In this video, I'...
I just got the brilliant idea to add some inlay to some patio furniture on my "to be made" list. I'm so glad I found this video - looks super easy to do and customize the color. Thank you!
I really enjoy your videos. I’m a Shaper Origin owner because I watched your videos. I saw on the news the other day that they sold out at the A’s last game in Oakland, I was wondering if you were there. I watched your ‘bombshell’ video on Cranky Workshop and was disappointed you are leaving UA-cam. But as a father of one child, also a daughter, I can understand that family time is priority. My daughter is 31, and let me tell you, they go from 5 to adults overnight. You’ll see it for yourself in about 15 years.
Appreciate you taking the time to watch. I really tried to find the time (and cash) to get back for the final game, but alas I watched it from my classroom up here in Spokane. Not ashamed to admit, I cried a little. I have chosen to let this channel go, but I'm working on building a new channel. If/when I do, I'll make a post on the community page here to let everyone know.
Great video~! I whole-heartedly agree with what you're saying and the way that you're approaching it in your classroom(s). Also hoping that it catches on thru your school and others. I'm retired military and continued working in the gov't sector filled with active & other prior-military. We fight the mobile device addiction as it seems impossible to get the younger gens to do anything without a cellphone in hand or looking at it every few seconds/minutes. Thankfully, I've worked in restricted-access environments, so it's easier to enforce, but it's still a fight. I can only hope that the administrations AND PARENTS get behind and/or remain behind teachers as it seems that your authority has been undermined. You don't always have to rule with an iron fist, but you still have to rule the classroom. Bravo~!! Oh, and great build~!! Love the ingenuity~!!
Hi Jered - first, I really enjoyed the video; great content and production. All that said, I have to question the cost aspect. The cheapest CA glue I could find is around $3/oz whereas my favorite epoxy is around $0.80/oz -- you can certainly find epoxy that is less is expensive if you want. For small jobs certainly using CA is easier, but for anything large I believe epoxy is still the way to go. Keep up the great work!
GREAT VIDEO, EVERYTHING BOUT IT !!!!
💚
Do you think it will last as long as epoxy

1. Screen time has been a parental concern since the first moving pictures were shown. 2. Spending time with your children to help them grow into productive adults is an idea older than #1. 3. You can read narratives of older generations bashing the young, and the young blaming the old folks for all their problems in any BCE writing, not new in the 21st century. 4. Spending time with people who are not like you helps you become a more caring, compassionate, mature person. 5. Haven’t decided which adult child gets the workbench I recorded for Christmas 1970, or if I keep it to work in the shop with my grandchildren when they come over. 6. Great video and life lesson. i'm a new woodworker - love your shit, normal talking and mistakes that I would make instead of woodfluencer malarky of a perfectly executed project. Makes you human and more likable. to me anyway!
I appreciate that. Rarely do I have a project that goes "perfectly." So when I fuck up (which is often), I'll share the setback and do my best to show to remedy
I hope this isn't a one and done video on the rebranded channel. I love your take on things and, while I understand the reasons for leaving the old identity behind (and nuking the podcast as well, though that wasn't a solo decision), I hated the idea of having to say so long in such a permanent way. Heck, I kind of felt an Expos/A's bond as well... anyway, in case you don't produce anything else, I thank you for the mica powder/baking soda technique once again as it has been awesome for me! I would have watched this closer to its launch but i took the family out of town to catch the Jays double header at Camden Yards and have been running since. 😂 I used to be known as an opinionated lad before in changed careers 16-plus years ago and have had to be publicly mute ever since. Maybe I've been living vicariously through your videos as I share your views and values. Don't ever change.
We are certainly two 🫛 in a pod, and I'm appreciative of your continued support. I feel like I've still got ⛽️ in the tank, but I've got to make some serious changes outside of YT (which I can't guarantee) in order to put out future videos
Im not just saying this but I genuinely feel like this is the best content I have seen of yours or anyone else for months. 2 passions combined into one video. Im not blowing smoke up your ass to try and change the future. That's yours to control. But if people cant feel the effort and passion coming at them when they watch this then I dont know what else you can do. Ive said it before and I will say it again, I hope your students and their parents/guardians know how lucky they are to have a teacher/role model who cares as much as you clearly do. I agree with you 100%. Bravo bud. I only wish YT had fed me this as the build is the cherry on top. I have been waiting patiently through your tempting insta stories. Sorry bud YT has let you down here.
I'm with him.
@@worstworkshopMark's a good guy to align with 👍
Once again Mark, you've identified my YT curse. I'm only able to reach those who are on this side of the camera. I'm proud of this video, the chest is pretty cool, but damn am I bent out of shape that this video hasn't been seen by educators. I was so ready to have conversations with teachers about this issue
@@vulgarwoodworks Oh yeah. We're fully aligned
I like everything you said. But I'd be quite angry if you took my sons his phone. It's controls his insulin pump. But by all means we can work on a another solution because I hate the obsession with the damn electronics.
As I said, teachers aren't in the business of confiscating personal property. With the constant reductions in Classified staff (i.e. school nurses), your son's need for their device, as justified as it may be, is the Achilles heel of this whole mandate. Once concession will lead to demands from other parents and then we're back to square one. I don't like it any more than you, but for these policies to work, they must be absolute
Wow, great build Jared! My wife is a teacher as well. I can't agree more with everything you had to say about this topic and I really enjoyed your unapologetic, level headed view. Also, I love seeing the shaper in action! Well done!👍
Thanks Adrian. I'm looking forward to putting this chest to work and seeing the effect it (and I) can have on reclaiming my classroom from the scourge of smartphones. Wish your wife best of luck this upcoming year for me. We teachers need all the help we can get
The state of education is becoming deplorable and there’s numerous reasons as to why: society, woke government, state laws and testing and I feel some of the wrong ppl have been hired and what I mean is finding willing teachers to come in is almost impossible in many areas like mine so substitutes are picked instead as long term subs and unfortunately ieps must be followed yet there’s not enough enforcement or direction given to unprepared staff. I agree there’s too much ideology that caters to parents more than addresses the root issues. What’s devastating is some of our best teachers who teach without bias yet are passionate and full of knowledge and skill, patriotism and teach real life lessons and aren’t afraid to be tough… they’re leaving and I don’t blame them not to mention pay isn’t great either for what teachers and staff are expected to put up with! I love btw your rule for entering into class, I absolutely support your perspective and I think you get it! To put it in the hands of the student, as you’ve done it, sets expectations immediately and reminds them they don’t get the final say and the class, desk, etc don’t belong to them! In fact they need to earn their spot in class and that’s not mean, that’s real life. I agree tech and the addiction to iPads and phones have only exacerbated the issues staff face in getting compliance not to mention their attention. But I think this is a societal issue that’s deep rooted and requires parents to be involved and willing to make efforts in getting control back. Basically school isn’t valued or appreciated like it once was and often teachers are forced into raising these kids rather than educating! Then comes along these occasional new ideas by the state to be kinder, avoid the real issues and avoid getting sued. Our educational system has become weak, tolerant of intolerable things and beat up on teachers rather than put their foot down and get control back. I think because school is required by law and paid for by taxes unlike other countries, society forgets how lucky our Nation is to offer every child regardless disability or needs, regardless financial means, etc. the right to a free education therefore it isn’t appreciated like it should be. Look at other countries where schools are a luxury, they don’t deal with the behaviors or violence teachers face here nor would they tolerate it. I don’t want free education to be taken but something in the way education is viewed has to! But this is also on school districts, admins, principals and staff to not tolerate excuses, ignore violence, etc. like I’ve been seeing worsen in the last few years. Very good discussion and a subject that needs to be discussed more often
There's quite a lot to unpack here, and all you said is completely valid. I'll keep my reply brief. As sensationalized as the problems associated with education have become in our news media, the reality is far from the myth. The vast majority of students are there because that's what they've told they must do. Those students are neither disruptive, nor high achievers, and that's perfectly acceptable. The higher end of the bell curve is going to do, and exceed, in everything they set their minds to. Which again, is great and they should be celebrated for that mentality. The lower side of the curve is what gets all the undue attention. Educators fixate on those who just don't get it while their in the system, and those students hate being identified and labeled. The phone issue is only the tip of the iceberg, but if we remove that delivery device from the equation for a few hours a day multiplied by 180 days multiplied by X amount of years, mark my words, the behaviors in question would drastically change. Then it will be another issue to contend with a few years from now. Sadly, it's just the nature of the beast
Great to have you back Jared! We have talked education in a previous life as my wife is a teacher. She has mentioned many times of the lack of classroom management from her colleagues that are fresh out of college in perhaps their first assignment. You have presented, in this video, a tool that could give any teacher regardless of experience level, another weapon in their arsenal to maintain control. The only certainty in this entire subject is this: if the teacher doesn't control the classroom....the students will. Again, love the new edge on things and great to see you back on the tube.
It definitely takes time to develop your "voice" and "style" as a teacher, and in the time it takes to find those traits, you certainly take a beating. Classroom management has turned soft in the past decade, and it's an aspect of the job I've actively fought against. Teenagers are NOT my equal, their issues outside of the classroom are out of my control, and thusly, none of my concern. I've been criticized too many times to count, that my style is authoritarian. Excuse me for having a set of balls and demanding a higher standard from those that are enrolled in my courses. The shit other teachers complain about on a daily basis, I don't have to deal with. I wonder why that is?
The state of schools has certainly changed over the years. Back when I was young it was the controversy over Walkman cassette players in high school. One point you nailed for sure is that without the backing of administrators and school boards, teachers are just being put in the middle of a no win situation.
I don't know why my original reply didn't go through, so I'll make another attempt. Smartphones are the thing right now. 5 years from now, it'll be something else. Educators will be always on defense as long as parents continue to impose the belief that their "rights" lead the charge. Schools should be citadels of pluralistic thought, of discourse, of diction. Perhaps if we ALL took a step back from mass media and mass communication, we could all elevate our abilities to think critically. Pie in the sky I know
Seriously, the biggest thing we had were sneaking in gum or candy, passing notes in class, and not getting caught with a crib notes to cheat on tests. LOL... Every generation has their slackers, burn-outs, nerds, jocks, geeks, outcasts, and underachievers. However, I can see how the phones can lead to a serious increase in the "underachiever" category. Mediocrity is very acceptable in society and we all hope for more than that for our children. I do feel you're take on things is precise, well thought out and correct. Wood working, life advice, and the want to make our children more accountable and engaged in their own education! You can't be more correct here my friend! Well done!
No point in doing the job if I'm not going to have any meaningful impact. Certainly not doing the job for the paycheck. I'm dying on this fucking smartphone ban hill this year. No more will I allow these damn devices to dictate what happens in my classroom
Way to go Jared. As a father of five my kids grew up knowing the teacher was always right and even if they weren’t they weren’t going to get edified by it. Now my kids are raising their kids and they are stricter than I was.
I'm certainly NOT right all the time, but the older these kids get, the MORE right I'll become. I'm on a quest to break these kids addictions 1 hour at a time, 5x a day, 180 days a year.
There’s the Jered I know. Telling it like it is 💪
And I only said fuck twice😂😂😂 Well 3x I guess
good job
This was a pain in my ass type project. Grateful you appreciated it. My students certainly won't, but they'll respect it whether they want to or not
New name, new direction. Very well put my man. As a teacher you can relate to these modern classroom issues, but all I can remember was trying to sneak gum in, not a phone. Haha - also, one of those big enough to fit an iPad would be good to keep around my house.
Gone are the days of passing notes. Kids doomscrolling TikTok & IG, taking pics of their feet to keep their dumbasd SnapChat streaks alive, watching PornHub in class, and constantly having ear buds implanted in their heads are the new norm.
@@vulgarwoodworks that is outrageous dude. And I thought I was cool sneaking in a TI83 for tests.
Wow. Such a nice storage for the phones! I hope many schools will order it from you! And yea - no phones in the classroom!!! I thought it’s kinda obvious, but I guess i have not seen it all just yet.
I hope I NEVER make another one of these chests again! I need a break from cutting circles. The foil tape bag is so much simpler
@@vulgarwoodworks hahahaha! okey then. still cool!
BRIGHT Very cool example! If you do get alcohol ink on your hands (or sharpie for that matter, as it's also alcohol based) use some rubbing alcohol and it comes back off pretty easy. I would make sure to use some sort of top coat over the stain, especially for anything like a table/coffee table that might have an alcoholic drink split on it, or be cleaned with something that contains alcohol, as the color can bleed back out
0:19 daaaaamn that's a savage wife burn... 🤣

Can this be used for a table that is 5ftx 18in, Iam trying to create an agate table.

I wish I was that clever. If you give it a try, test first before going headlong into your project.
Ahhhh, I see your problem. You mixed MM with inches. If you had just stayed with the antiquated Inch program, it would have been fine. Remember the Hubble mirror debacle? Yes, that was it, not your fault,,, well maybe it was. Nice build though, meow meow meow. (a cats input on the finish)
I blame the American public education system for my Cro-Magnon usage of the Imperial system. The rest of the world certainly is far more sophisticated
LMAO, you're fuckin' awesome bro! I love the complete honesty, now I can look forward to making those same mistakes as I get better! Keep on makin these vids man!

I was ready to ladle out copious amounts of crap for using a luxury tool. Then I remembered I have one of those Shaper gadgets too. But, come on man. Who really NEEDS a batter power stapler. A corded one will do just fine without all the mucking about with batteries and chargers. 😂😂 But seriously, thank you for another quality video and for showing the human error that many edit out. It is good to see that we can all make mistakes. More importantly, we can all overcome them.
Cords are so 20th century 😂 Maybe then Gen 3 Shaper will be cordless? Run time of 13minutes on a 12amphr Festool battery of course

Smartphones are the devil. They've ruined an entire group of kids and adults. I was out to dinner recently, and I looked around, and no one was talking to each other. They were all staring mindlessly at the damn phones. Such a waste of experience. Great message that more of us need to take to heart.
Yeah I've noticed that disturbing trend as well. I must be the only person who leaves his phone in the truck when he gets to wherever I need to be.
Good save on this one. Way to incorporate the Shaper into this project. Subtle touch made a huge difference into that door. Question for ya.... Was your "NOT CEDAR" example to scale? Looked pretty damn close to the real thing. Also, did you take your soffits color into consideration? Pretty dang close in color
It looks like I did make the small door to scale, but I was just winging it. As far as the soffits, that was a happy accident. Those soffits desperately need replacing, so when I've got a few more nickels to rub together, I'll definitely replace with cedar and use this finish
Artwork aside, this is a really good method just for repairing items. Refilling cracks, connecting plastics back together, or even adding to items to make them more functional. Also ashes work in place of baking soda, so does cornstarch. You can even make small items with this as you would with a 3D printer. Just make a mold for it. It's really an incredible substance.
I should mention also, one caveat with this technique is that it's very difficult to work with. In this example using it to fill it's pretty easy, but doing more delicate or intricate repairs with it can be tricky. Just because it hardens so quickly. Also when you drop the glue on it it tends to form a bead and roll off of the powder if it's on an angle. It doesn't mix readily with the baking soda. But if you're on a flat surface like this filling something then it's no problem.
Absolutely. I've been playing around with other "fillers" just to see what happens, and as long as the medium is fine enough, practically anything will work
Very true. There is a fair amount of delicacy in applying the glue. Large drops leave pits in the mica, and it's better to go thinner layers to get full penetration of the glue, than the heftier fills I did here. All part of the learning process
That’s a good lookin door. Didn’t know that trick about putting the frame in tension to put on the screen - it’s always a bonus when you watch a video and you are entertained and informed, good work dude
Thanks bud. I learned that trick from my granddad way back last century. Works like a charm and really helps to avoid having to wait for that second pair of hands
@@vulgarwoodworks Yes, that was an awesome tip!
100% some type of CNC, Laser, and even a 3D is becoming more and more necessary in the shop! Even more, some people who haven't used one seem to think the machine does all the work, the hours of designing and creating the file for the cut paths just make themselves 🤣 Nicely done, the screen door looks great!
So true. I have no idea how much time I've spent asking the wife if she likes what I've designed.
@@vulgarwoodworks 🤣🤣🤣 or "What if we add this" after you finish the design

By the sounds of those who have commented on this video, I think the parents of Gen Alpha have swung the pendulum and this group of kiddos is going to be just fine.
Thank you for this thoughtful video. Kid shop time starts now! 😀❤
Just trying to do my part and hopefully inspire others to do what they can. Appreciate you taking the time to listen
Spent a lot of time with my nephew' and niece's as they were growing up. I filled in a lot of space their parents could not because of work. They grew up camping, hiking, and learning to work with their hands. They are all successful grownups now and I'd like to believe I had a small part in that. Their parents gave them a good work ethic, and my being self employed gave me lots of time with them. I hope they have as many good memories of me that I have of them.
My parents were the same, so my grandparents became the instrument of learning, much like yourself. To borrow a phrase, "It takes a village." Hopefully you niece and nephew will realize the importance of what you and their parents did and will carry on that legacy. Thanks for taking the time to listen
Can i ask can these alternative be used to make a diy particle board with Coconut husks or banana fibers instead of Resin because it is too expensive and this for our research project?
I've seen people recycle saw dust wood glue to make diy MDF, so anything is possible through trial and error. I wouldn't suggest using CA glue if you need a large panel
Our kids and grandkids need us. God promises us as parents. Train up a child in the way he should go, when he is old he will not depart. You go young daddy!
