Should Bitcoin Mining Be Eligible For The 45Q Tax Credit?
Should bitcoin mining be included in the 45Q tax credit? By capturing landfill methane gas, 8 gigatons of C02e (8000 mtCO2e) could be reduced over 20 years. Using Cambridge BTC electricity consumption index, which some experts believe under estimates BTC’s renewable energy use (thus making CO2e worse than it actually is) the methane emissions reduced could make bitcoin’s network carbon negative by 1000s of times.
The bitcoin network is 100% electric… As such, it is the source of energy that causes its emissions… Leveraging bitcoin miners at landfills not only can cause bitcoin miners to reduce methane released into the atmosphere, but also creates a financial incentive whereas otherwise there is a cost.
The “Methane Reduction and Economic Growth Act” - which is bipartisan legislation introduced by Mark Warner (D-VA) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) also proposes a tax credit that offers new incentives for reducing methane emissions in the U.S. from abandoned mines. As bitcoin can be used to create electricity to reduce methane emissions, it seems reasonable that section 45Q should include a tax credit for bitcoin mining equipment that captures and/or creates heat or electricity.
One of the challenges with greenhouse gas emissions reduction is measuring the amount of GhG such as methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere - however bitcoin mining is highly measurable in terms of hash rate or the amount of energy utilized that serves as the security mechanism for bitcoin in generating new bitcoin for miners.

    Where are you getting this idea that session hijacking usually starts with a sniffing attack? The vast majority of websites and services send session tokens over a secure connection, meaning the token cannot be sniffed. And even then, the hacker would have to already have control over a device near the victim in order to sniff. As far as I'm aware it's not common for malware to start sniffing either. Most session hijacking is due to malware. The user runs something they shouldn't and the malware grabs their token. VPNs aren't nearly as useful as people make them sound. Yes, there are unsecured wifi networks... that doesn't mean you can't still make a secure connection to websites and other services. It just means that any connections that aren't secure could be sniffed by a nearby device or altered in a MITM attack. That's why you get an extension/addon like HTTPS Everywhere to ensure your web browsing stays secure even on sketchy networks. VPNs are frankly overkill for anyone who isn't actively being targeted by a motivated individual/group. Unless you're using it simply as a utility to tunnel into a home/work network or evade region blocks/content filters.

    Recently, when I turned on private relay, I noticed that UA-cam on Safari is very slow. Since the loading speed is slow, the video quality is automatically lowered. If you manually change it to high quality, try moving the timestamp here and there. The quality will be lowered or the video will stop. This change is more noticeable on older Macs. It wasn't like this before, but private relay has been acting strange for the past month or two.

    Thanks 4 the test. On Christmas eve I came out to go2 work. Car was gone. Honda Accords are being stolen like crazy where I live in Philly. Definitely invest in a Faraday box n pouches, I got a set for 20$ on Amazon. Also....if you have rims, u might want to add an extra rim lock on each, and invest in an alarm. I was carjacked @ gunpoint once, and recently the key fob got hacked. Also, one more inexpensive way to ensure your car won't start .......pull the ignition circuit. It might sound like a lot, but if you live in the city, it will help you sleep at night.

    Anyone had this issue ?? I am an insurance producer, and I am not appointed with any admitted insurance companies. I want to get quotes and each time when i contact to those 2-3 wholesale brokers that finally got appointed, they send me surplus only , and if you want to bind then they require to fill our diligent effort form that most states require. Essentially, I have to prove that I reached out to 3-5 admitted insurance companies they declined the applicant and that is why i am forced to seek coverage in surplus line markets. I am new in business and not appointed with any admitted insurance company, so i do not even have any admitted carrier to reach out. So how I am suppose to fill out diligent effort statement? What exactly should I say when filling it out to ensure it gets approved?"

    If a person is a victim of a sim swap, are the passwords protected in iOS?

    • @RobFreeman
      @RobFreeman Місяць тому

      A sim swap just gives the criminals access to your phone number, not iOS. But if they can use your phone number to gain access to your data by sending messages to the phone to validate 2FA or something then they could get access to your account. Apple is adding new layers of security and security measures to make it more difficult for this to be done.

    Thieves have now a new device to steal keyless cars. They don’t need to stand one at your car & the other at your door with an antenna anymore. What they do now is walk or drive up to your car, use their new device which doesn’t need any signal coming from your keys. The device opens up the doors straight away & once the thieves are in the car it only takes them about 1 minute and the cars gone. so i suggest you clamp your cars wheel or use a battery cut off switch.

    1 Password allows other documentation like notes and attachments to be stored with passwords and also haa a separate "secure notes" section for passports etc. Apple Passwords doen't seem to accommodate anything like this. And Notes with PDF attachements can't be secured with a password. So Passwords seems a good option if all one needs is password storage but if you need more than apps like 1 Password are better options, right?

    • @RobFreeman

    • @RobFreeman

      If you’re using an iPhone or iCloud you should have the secure payments options available through the Wallet app, and Apple Pay, so you wouldn’t need to necessarily save your credit card because it will automatically fill from Safari… That said, if you prefer to use Chrome or another browser you might not have the seamless experience that you describe as you would with 1Password. Apple Passwords does allow you to add notes to a record.

    I think that the downside to the password app is that apple has set the “password” to get into it (after biometric attempts fail) to be the same as the device (say, an iPhone) passcode. So, if a thief shoulder surfs your iPhone lock code and then steals your phone…… he has all the info he needs to enter your phone AND your password app. The Wall Street Journal had a great story on this about 2 years ago…. With real world interviews of people that this has happened to….. Apple, to my knowledge, has not fixed this vulnerability (I.e. allow folks to use a DIFFERENT password from the device passcode to get into the Password app.

    Hi Rob, thx for this vid,, well laid out, and you are easy to understand. I have been on 1password for quite a long time, being on 100% apple ecosystem, but occasionally using chrome browser. I switch from time to time browsers, between chrome and safari. Since introduction of Apple Passwords, seems like I am occasionally granting , especially newly created passwords, letting apple Passwords do its thing. So experimenting somewhat. I don’t know if , or when I will make a decision to stick to one or the other, but it definitely creates a decision process, each and every time the question is asked where I want to store my password. I sure hope that Apple, should they ever be hacked, does a better job than other passwords managers at alerting customers of irregularities, as they seem to have a slow apparatus of acknowledging problems, from what I have seen.

    I actually use multiple password managers. I like the redundancy, but I also like having access to the varied features of competing products. Zoho Vault has great autofill options in the browser extension. Bitwarden has the quickest browser autofill (via Ctrl-Shift-L), and supports Passkeys. KeepassXC is super secure, and has many options for sorting and organizing login entries and secure notes. It even works when the online services don't (even if this is a rare event).

    Why would the website passwords ONLY work on Safari and not other browsers? Because Apple wants to track you with their own code in their own browser! For starters, this password manager it's not open source, so how it works is not made public by Apple. Don't trust anyone guys! I use the open source KeePassXC app, which is not perfect but is safe and works well.

    My Apple password is less complex than my Keepass manager. The former would take months to hack, the latter many years. Also, not everything in my soho is Apple. I have three different third party pswd managers using two encrypted files stored locally and also synced on the web.On my iPhone I have three different pswd managers. All this serves me well except for one thing, because my iMac is 2019, I can't synchronize my Apple Password apps to my iPhone whereas all my third party apps do sync on both devices and on my chrome and android devices. I also find that the Apple app requires face ID and a password to insert the pswd, where as the others just need the face ID to access the 13 char lock on the app and let it do the fill in for me. Therefore, in general use, I don't find a compelling case for the Apple Password app.

    • @RobFreeman
      @RobFreeman 3 місяці тому

      Seems like a lot of moving parts there… I would think that narrowing your password management options down to one 3rd party PW manager and Apple Passwords might reduce complexity. An 18 character password using upper and lower case letters would take something like 100 billion years to hack using a brute force attack… If you add numbers, which I think Apple defaults to, I think it’s in the trillions of years.

    Something you didn't mention, and something I believe is a significant vulnerability of the Apple Password app, is that if someone gets access to your relatively simple login password for your Apple Device, they will then have access to all your passwords by simply opening the Apple Password app. 3rd party password managers, such as 1Password, have their own separate master password. So even if someone gains access to your Apple Device, they still could not access your passwords as they would not know your master password, which is typically a much longer and more secure password than your Apple login password.
