    It's actually probably very nice for astarion, since he got to see how he looks. he had said before that he hasn't been able to do that since he turned. also i think there is a switch on the lift itself and the lever is for calling it down (and running into a trap)

      I wonder how terrible Geran would feel to know that the answer to the Faith-Leap trial was on the floor right before the offering altar and he somehow missed it the entire time. Granted I only realized it after his first attempt failed. I imagine he would have found it funny also if the trial hadn't frustrated him so.

      "When the position is such that neither side will gain by making the first move, it is called Temporizing Ground. In a position of this sort, even though the enemy should offer us an attractive bait, it will be advisable not to stir forth, but rather to retreat, thus enticing the enemy in his turn; then, when part of his army has come out, we may deliver our attack with advantage." While Sun Tzu may not exist in Faerun, I'm certain that Eve's father taught her in the ways of military philosophers like him.

  • @jcohasset23

    I wonder what Balthazar's build is as Cloudkill is a 5th level spell and he's only level 8 so technically doesn't have access to the spell slots. Also if one was metagaming I could see this fight being rather easy as poison damage is the easiest damage type to get resistance or immunity to in regular 5e.

    • @itaygert
      @itaygert 12 днів тому

      I believe he didn't actually cast it so many times. In 5e Cloudkill is a concentration spell that allows you to move the area every turn for the duration. I think Balthazar only cast it twice, and while maintaining concentration only "cast" it by moving the existing cloud to a new area. A 5th level spell that does 5d8 instantaneous poison damage is really underwhelming, the concentration makes it worth the slot

    • @Gar1onTabletop
      @Gar1onTabletop 12 днів тому

      Cloudkill is a concentration spell, but RAW it moves directly away from you with each turn. For him to reposition it like he did it'd either be a reworking of the spell in the game or he cast it multiple times. I've just looked it up, and the BG3 version *does* allow you to move it each turn. ... ... Well. Nevermind then.

    • @jcohasset23
      @jcohasset23 12 днів тому

      @@Gar1onTabletop I do have to admit that BG3's version making it so the caster can move it so that the spell functions like a poison version of the spell Dawn does make it more useful. It doesn't change the fact that he shouldn't have the 5th level slots to cast it twice as a level 8 npc without major nerfing (it's only at level 10 does one get 2 5th level spell slots) but even overlooking that upon reviewing the video I see the game cheats with the spell as Karlach, Asterion, and Eve took damage from when he cast Cloudkill and again upon their turn, which is why Asterion and Eve were downed the second time as they were getting hit with Cloudkill twice in the rounds it's being cast. Though I do have to say the fact that the spell (or maybe concentration aoe spells in general) is showing a lot of nerfing here is an indication of how situational most 5th level offensive spells are as unless one rolls well on the damage it can feel underwhelming in using up a 5th level spell slot to do an average of 20 damage per creature and that's only if they fail the save.

    I really wish I understood how speak with animals worked better. With situations like with the rats here I struggle to understand if they actually are following religion, are they actually praying to shar and calling you unworthy, or is that just the way that we interpret their thoughts via the magic. Cause if the rats are actually following the Shar religion that makes me question the supposed 2 in intelligence the game says they have.

  • @jcohasset23

    I agree that this is a nicely made fight and a good way to make it challenging without it becoming stupidly difficult. One rarely sees these kind of fights in tabletop games due to the number of npcs the DM has to then juggle and roll for.

    Sharpshooter can be a really fun feat if you get the chance to hit high enough with builds that let you make a lot of bow attacks a turn, like gloomstalker+assassin or thief with duel hand crossbows, but outside those situations the cost of -5 to hit usually isn't worth it imo. Don't feel bad about ASI, sometimes it just is the most valuable option.

  • @jcohasset23
    @jcohasset23 24 дні тому

    I'd been wondering why Shadowheart had relatively low hp compared to the rest of the party but then I do see that she has the lowest Con in the group with 13. It's a bit weird to see a ranged character not take sharpshooter as that usually is a go-to option in any irl campaign I've been in but I agree that it's not apparently that useful in BG3 and honestly even in a regular DnD campaign there are not many instances when a player is needing to shoot something over 100 feet away. Stat increases might be boring but I've seen a lot of DnD leveling guides recommend it to max out your primary stats asap before going for feats- which I suspect is part of why one DM I know would sometimes hand out free feats during campaigns but with the caveat they could only be used on feats and not stat increases as a way to encourage players to take feats.

    • @Gar1onTabletop
      @Gar1onTabletop 23 дні тому

      Yeah it's definitely the meta thing to max your stat first. I SORT OF do that if the starting stat is an odd number; then I can take a feat that increases it by 1 and gives me something cool. I guess the idea is you increase that by 1 and another by 1.

    • @jcohasset23
      @jcohasset23 23 дні тому

      @@Gar1onTabletop Half-feats are great if a player has an odd number stat since typically only even number stats count towards anything (skill and saving throw pluses and minuses) and many of them do offer some useful ability that can add quite a bit to a character. There are a number of feats that see little use outside of very niche circumstances or builds due to the fact that the abilities don't offer any stat increase and aren't worth giving up a rare feat to take.

    about the covert cowl, the effect can stack means you can further lower the number needed for critical hits if you have other items that do so. this on just need you to be obscured for it to activate. (another item would be knife of the undermountainking and if equiped and he is obscured to activate the cowl he would crit on a 18,19 and 20)

    @Tfin 26 днів тому

    I think the "effect" that can stack with the cowl is the lowering of the crit threshold, meaning that other things can also lower it. "More explosives... I saw this door." Yup, the reason both of the walls had explosives *behind* them is that someone went through there backwards. The barrels were there to open the walls, not blow up people going through!

    • @jcohasset23
      @jcohasset23 25 днів тому

      Yeah I interpret the cowl's effect also at lowering what the character needs to roll to do a crit by one, similar to Champion's Improved Critical ability. It's nice that there is such a wide variety of magical equipment but it does mean the magical economy of this game is kind of busted, especially compared to most ttrpg campaigns where even in a high magic campaign the players may not have much, if any, in the way of rare equipment at their current level.

    it is the knife of the undermountain king i mentioned before, as long s it's in the weaponslot, everything using attack rolls crits on more numbers. this effect stacks if you find other stuff like it, and works even if you had for example both a bow and a sword with said effect equipped, no matter what you attack with the effect stays. 3:09 This feels like the time I tried Elder Scrolls: Arena and was killed by the first rat I came across as I couldn't figure out the combat (to be fair having the right mouse be the attack button is weird and the starting dungeon has a massive difficulty curve). I really like this game but it can be quite unforgiving.

    I know this is 6 months old but please! Respec your characters they’ll work so much better for you 😂 also Astarion has two bonus actions every turn from Fast Hands that I don’t think I’ve seen you take advantage of once

    12:10 Amen to that rant. It's like games, movies, and tv can't show damage to an area or a post-apocalyptic/combat area without rubble and debris everywhere in places where people live and work even though irl when people have downtime they go and get a broom to clean up as it improves safety, hygiene, and morale. Happy 100 episodes!

    I really disliked the leadup to this moment. It was a crazy interesting moment, but I hate how it railroads you to it which hasn't really been present in anything up until this point (idk if it happens again you I am at the exact same point in the game as you). Also the relative ease in which a ragtag group is able to effectively wipe out the Creche makes the Githyanki lose a lot of their intimidation factor for me. I was scared going in because I figured angering the Gith would end up in a TPK, but in reality the Goblins felt like a more difficult fight.

    Yes, you'll... almost certainly... be back to that plane. You were given a hint about the statues elsewhere in the building.

      There's a big difference between, when asked if you ate someone's sandwich, they respond: "No, I didn't eat your sandwich." and "......No..... I definitely didn't.....eat your sandwich...." I do want you to comment and interact, but you *have* to completely avoid spoilers, spoiler hints, or references to things that I'd consider spoilery.

      @@Gar1onTabletop Hmm... The "almost certainly" was meant in earnest, as in, "maybe you won't, I'm not absolutely sure you can't avoid it." There really have been some surprises in your playthrough.

    for the statue you never made a check indicating that it was something else, so you should try some different stuff.

    It's interesting to hear you taking some time to think through everything that could the case, and explaining your reasoning. Though I have to admit, with games like these, I can often get lost with how many sidequests they get to the point I can't recall the important parts like you do here (assuming I don't lose interest entirely).

    • @jcohasset23
      @jcohasset23 2 місяці тому

      The fact that there really isn't any urgency in time for the main quest so the player can do all the exploring and sidequests they want also can make it harder to keep track of what's going on in the shadows of the main quest. That the creche is also apparently an optional path for the main quest means that skipping it could have lead to an entirely different outcome and line of reasoning.

      That's interesting. I had a similar problem watching Geran's playthrough of Wasteland 2, and the original Baldur's Gate. So easy to lose one's way.

    I really enjoy the theorising. I think the dream visitor could still be connected to Orpheus, with Orpheus holding the secret knowledge. In that case, the dream visitor could either be a follower/friend of Orpheus, or, as you suggested, an illusion he employed to communicate with you. He'd definitely have reason to hide his true identity for now. Eve hasn't done what the dream visitor has asked of her so far, so it would seem like a high risk to put all cards on the table at this point.

    cannot comment on your theories but i am enjoying them. also agreed the writing in this section is weak, in my opinion it tricks you into thinking it’s an important decision you are making but there isn’t one and you’re just being railroaded here, because they needed to reveal who is in the prism + destroy lae’zel’s faith at this point in the game. if you opened the map you’d get the notice that when the map is red, it means you cannot use fast travel in that area (to other portals or to the camp). should first have been encountered in auntie ethel’s basement
