Have the exact same card, mine starting to heat up real bad. You've been a great help
are you using the beacon to help it track you?
No beacon. It’s supposed to help with tracking but not obstacle avoidance
Nice video would like to see the strava for this
Thank you, I don’t think I was using Strava back then. I’ll do the ride again and make an update video and will post the Strava link.
Thanks for the honest review. All your points are important to know before buying. I don’t have a HoverAir, but I’ve had a number of drones (Skydio, DJI Maivc and DJI Minin 4, Staaker) and none are perfect. Everyone raves about the Skydio and hate that it's no longer available, but I've had issues with the Skydio. It was not perfect like everyone claims. The Skydio certainly does not hit anyhting due to its obstacle avoidance, but it often struggles to follow me, especially on snow skiing a steep slope. One thing Skydio support told me to help fix the tracking issue was to set it higher so it could see me better. I did that and it didn’t help. If any thing it made tracking worse because the extra distance seemed to amplify its inability to see me. My question for you, you have the HoverAir quite low, lower than a walking eye-level. Did you try it at a higher elevation, like five feet above the brush? That might help with the collisions you had. Plus having it fly so low, in my opinion, is not remarkable footage. It looks like someone is following you with a GoPro, not a flying camera. My ski videos look best when the drone is set 20 feet above me. In comparison, both my DJIs tracked much worse than the Skydio. The DJI tracking ability is very disappointing. My best drone for tracking was the Staaker, it had a wearable beacon that locked on to the drone. The tracking was flawless, but it had zero obstacle avoidance so it crashed constantly, requiring constantly replacing arms and rotors, which was not cheap. Staaker had a good product, but with obstacle avoidance it would have been almost perfect (although it was big and heavy). Staaker never added osbtacle avoidance and they went of business, so no longer avaialbe. From the videos I’ve seen, it looks like the HoverAir tracks better than the Skydio, but it has poor obstacle avoidance. I’m curious how it performs on snow following a skier descending a steep slope. So far I’ve seen no ski videos from the HoverAir, except for the marketing videos on their website, and those slopes were quite flat, beginer or intermediate slopes. Thanks for the review.
It looked like two of the issues you had were due to contrast. At the beginning when you put your hand out, it was a black glove that blended with your body. Did you try it with your hand out to the side so there is a clear distinction between your hand and the ground? Second when you tried to have the camera follow you from a stationary position and it looked far to the right, it looked like that was because you rode into a dark shadow. Maybe it wouldn’t have that problem if you were lit consistently the whole time? Curious to know if it works better under more ideal situations.
At the time I made the video, the app alluded to gesture based control. Since then, they removed it from the app menu because it never existed…
Super nice review! I'll definitely wait for that types of products to improve before puchasing one. I really would like something being able to follow me reliably on wooden trails... I guess this will be possible soon.
Thank you for saving me 1k USD and a tone of frustration.
Where is there ?
The Strava link under the video will the route
Good Training
Your review is very helpful
Thanks, glad it was helpful
Have you tried with phones like the bigger iPhone 13 or latest 16 pro max?
No, just the GoPro
Nice ride. I’m going to have to try this one. Just did Highland Valley trail south east of LH and that was super fun, just too short. Seems like you can string a few of these different trails in for a longer day.
Thanks for your effort in putting this together. Very useful and your conclusions have me swayed (away 😂).
Glad it was helpful!
Do you know where those jumps at 4:44 are? Is that above the 4palms trail?
you should have gotten stitches on that finger
I’m certain this drone has a use to add footage to a ride through pre-filming trail parts, start, jumps, etc and the end of the trail. Then combine that with what I’m going to purchase for MTB rides - a 360 X4. 😉 #MTB_BOOMER
I agree
Most excellent review and solid MTB work on the stairs. I I have the standard X1 and it does work, amazing product but not perfect. Thought I would get the Pro or Pro Max but am going to pause. Do you think it makes sense to wait till the spring for software updates? -Definitely a flying camera and not a drone. -I spent way too much time trying to figure out how to set the date with Google / AI Search and eventually learned there is no clock and need to sync it before each ride. I did contact support via the app and got a timely response which was good. -For road cycling I use it in limited cases and just one or 2 riders and no cars as a novelty compared with my GoPro. -Agree with you that I am always checking to make sure it is there. On a paved bike trail I thought I lost it twice but road back and it was just hovering. - For skiing the product would be awesome compare to an action camera because footage with many turns requires much work in post. However if there is an issue and it gets stuck retrieving will be very difficult to climb up and if you ski down, someone could take it (with good or bad intentions). If you have a small group of 3 or 4, someone could trail the device.
It’s advertised as being faster, but in wooded areas, speed + turns+ obstacles = crashing. As a result, I have to keep it at below 12mph in crowded areas. With that being said, that’s a comfortable speed for the original x1. The only reason I could think of, to reasonably justify the upgrade, is the higher video quality and slow motion.
And thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for this video. I was really hoping this would be the answer to Skydio leaving the civilian market and also being something much smaller for packing. It looks like it's close, but not good enough for the area i ride. Too many pine and oak trees.
It works well in certain situations but you have to be highly aware of the surroundings. Compared to the skydio, it records at a much closer distance so the subject doesn’t look like an ant going 1 mph. I really like that aspect of the hoverair. With more refinement, it can become an awesome product.
I am a skier. I ski quite fast.. there’s no way it could keep up with me. Imagine skiing and the drone loses you… someone else picks up your drone and you never see it again.
You sir, are a trooper!
Hehe, thank you. That was when I first started out
What camera are you using. Seems clearer than my GoPro 11.
GoPro 12 on hdr mode
I'm actually fairly impressed with how it handled the trail with those hairpin turns. Was the drone height set to low height for all these tests? Good review overall, thanks for putting it together.
I have tried the high setting. It helps a little but still crashes. On downhill rides, it still flies low when set on high.
Works, but we need to be able to switch the follow modes on the beacon during flight. To land it: Remove your gloves!
for the viewers, can you point to where it says not to wear gloves? Thank you
@@mtbmonk7076nowhere for sure. That was just my finding! I guess the AI recognizes the shape of an open hand to initiate RTH. Therefore it needs to see it. Pale skin in front of a dark background works best…
@@Chorge1972 I've been having a difficult time finding a comprehensive instruction pdf, that's why I asked.
Yeah I have never had any close calls with the moto guys and I usually ride with earbuds. Rode out there twice this past Oct and never saw anybody exept at the table up at 4 corners. Hell we used to ride out her occasionally back in the early 90’s on hard tails with our 80mm travel rockshox Judy’s. Wouldn’t do it now without an e-bike.
Could you put an air tag on this without it affecting flight?
I think so… but they are working on a lost mode. So hopefully 🤞🏼 you won’t need an AirTag
Do you think having it a higher elevation would have solved the crashing and tracking issues? How is it now? Still using it?
No, it still crashes on high mode. After the last firmware upgrade, videos keep freezing… so I’m not using it for now.
how is your e storia holding up, do you still love it?
Still have it. Great product although it developed a leak before the service date and I had to get it repaired.
@@mtbmonk7076 oh man, would you recommend it after all this time ?, I am really thinking about getting one of those
I see this drone thinking to buy but for me the follow not good can't avoid obstacles, but the camera quality is good, its stay a selfie drone.
It’s great for most applications. I’m using it for family photos
Great video, thanks. Disappointing to see though because I was hoping this was finally the drone I'd been waiting for. Guess I'll keep waiting.
It’s great for other things, so I’m happy overall.
Where to order it?
I saw in another video that you can change the height when the drone is in follow mode. It would probably make sense for you to set in on its highest setting since you ride in areas without tall obstacles like trees.
It was still a bit too low for me, even on the highest setting.
Have you tried Tesla FSD lately? It is damn close to being "there"
Hopefully it’s better than this drone
I been using skydio2 for some years, its not the most compact follow-me drone, so i have been looking at other options.. not sure this one is it though. skydio2 has better obstacle avoidance, is sturdier design and has more battery time. too bad the technology has stagnated due to the company having left the consumer space.
This one follows much closer than the skydio; therefore, the shot looks much better. But it’s not dependable, at high speeds, unless you’re in an open field
@mtbmonk7076 Myself for closer video I use the insta360 X4 camera on a pole or as unicorn mount ..On EUC.
Thanks for the review. It give some insights which are very worrisome. I also purchased the product for MTB and spend over $1000. I haven’t received my unit yet but I am seriously considering to cancel my order.
It works well in select places and scenarios. Eg no trees, no fast turns. It may still provide some valuable shots. It’s also good for group pics
@@mtbmonk7076 Luckily it got much better with the latest FW update 7.3.4. but still margin for improvements
If this drone did what we all want it too do..follow like an fpv...the company would be on stock market next week..i would pay 600 euros for one if it did its job..as its still in its tech infancy..its clearly not fit for purpose YET...when it is im in...🤙🤙
It’s going to be amazing when it’s at that level.

you gotta stand completely still so it acknowledges that you're done filming so you can walk up to it to land.
Had you been climbing for a long time when it landed at 7:20?
Under 3 minutes
Thank you so much for the review. This really helps me to decide.
I almost bought into the X1ProMax hype, but decided to go the cheap route and purchased a Neo...I'm looking for the scenics, rather than trying to track fast-paced action and it does a good job at that...I just hae to keep the riding (motorcycle) below 15mph for those shots...curious as to whether you'd get better results with the drone higher in the air...you seem to be flying it fairlly low...
It’s slightly better at high mode but still runs into things…
Yeah, speed is really what it has going for it...but do you really need it this to get some nice shots? It's not going to be fast enough for skiing either'
BORING, NO JUMPS, BUMPS, OR DROPS, except for the micro ones.
Happy Halloween😬
U talking about DJI NEO there some videos about it ..alots crashes, landed & lost in water , flips around when is drops , alots damn issues 2 , both of them have alots issues .sometimes thinking F it just rapped it up my Promax & return it, is NOT freaking cheap
Nice review! Same doubts here whether it's mature for fast-moving sports
The problem is the software an aps is not really ready they pup this out to fast now the updates coming left and right every week since they're released it, I don't think going to be completely ready till the end of the year
completely agree with you! the clear explained user manual is MISSING! ZZR please listen to this, many people got this drone now might lose it because of NOT clear explained user manual. The one shipped with are completely useless.
Dolly mode as ZZR commented in my other post, it won't work when you did a turn and it will just become follow mode and land.
Thanks
I have the original Hover air X one and it always reminds me of AI teammates in a video game. It tries to do the basics, but when it loses you, it will literally just stare off in the space and wait for you to come and save it. I have almost lost it a couple of times and what saves me is going into the app. There is a command and manual mode to turn on the camera. So then you can at least see what it’s looking at and try to walk into frame if possible. Awesome video by the way! Great information.👍🔥
It still tracks better than DJI drones. Not as good as Skydio 2. Great video
Thanks! I agree it’s a good option but it’s still early days with it.
