One step, one frame 1974
Super-8 Kodachrome in 1974. Take a step, take a single frame. And repeat 1000 times. 2 hours later I've encircled my parents' house twice. Canon 1014E. Heavy. My arms ache.

Here's 25 seconds of Super-8 Kodachrome 40 shot in 1983, as I pranced about in front of my locked down Canon 1014E. I used a 180 degree black mask over my front element and a home-made intervalometer, using the camera's rewind facility to double expose the film.
Colour Correction

I see many colour transparency cine films that are slowly losing their original colours as the years pass by. This film shows how I've been able to use DaVinci Resolve's colour-correction to do a remarkable restoration job.
Super-8 single frames

11 seconds, 200 photos. I used my Canon 814E as a still camera in 1973, shooting many different subjects. What do you recall?
Digitising and AI demo film

A short film showing how I digitise 8mm cine film and how an AI app on my smartphone can take a single frame, reduce its grain, sharpen it, colourise it and even animate it. Magic!

New Bath Hotel pool, Matlock, is an unheated lido in Derbyshire. A mountain stream runs continuously through the pool, so it's only for the brave. Training video shot from poolside using the Yi4K on a pole. 2.7K@50p

Hi Team, here's 12 minutes (sigh) shot on Kodachrome 40 nearly 49 years ago, and digitised today. I've removed the splices and it's just pretty pictures, nothing more. I'd just bought a Canon 1014E and was playing with multiple exposures, tracking, cardboard titles, focus pulls, locked exposure, delayed action, different frame rates, and the camera's variable length dissolves. I also used a clo...
Stabilised vs original comparison
I've used DaVinci Resolve's 'Translation' image stabilisation to iron out the Super-8's perforation flutter and film gate weave. The original Super-8 from the early 1970s was pretty steady anyway, but the improvements DaVinci makes to the footage is remarkable, and it hardly ever puts a foot wrong. Even better is that it ignores the perfs and stabilises the image itself.

Sweden in the summer of 1981. Shot on Kodachrome 40 in a Canon 1014E, and digitised by refilming the gate of the Eumig projector using a Laowa macro lens attached to a Sony A7Rii.
UTA Airlines Super 8 film

Spiders in 4K

Tiny baby spiders I found in my garage. 150 can fit on one of my fingernails, so I filmed them, with difficulty, using my Sony A7Rii and Laowa 2.5-5x macro lens.
Bus Stop 16~9 Super 8 1982
In April 1982 I found this old burnt out airport bus in the grounds of the old Gothenburg airport. I made this 6 minute film to contrast my little light Opel Kadett with the big, heavy, dead bus. The film won a 'Ten Best' award in 1985. It was shot mute on a Canon 1014E, and is assembled with hundreds of Wurker tape splices. This is a 16:9 crop from the original 4:3 film.
Nice one 💪👏🎬🇬🇧🥇
Excellent Tom, good to see old homestead 😢
This is probably the best filmed and put together video on a day out at the dome … I’ve even going through them all today. Thanks for taking the time to put this together, I think you have footage if a lot of things here that otherwise would have been lost to the mist of time!
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a fun day out.
Hi Tom, I hope this finds you well. I'm working on a documentary and interested in using your excellent footage. I wondered if you had an email I could please reach out on? Thanks so much, Yasmin
Yes, absolutely. tom r hardwick at g mail dot com. I look forward to hearing from you.
UA-cam lets you run the film at 0.25x speed which drags the film out somewhat, but does let you see the photos better.
Incredible quality hidden away in 8mm cine. Tom brings it out to perfection ❤
What camera is this called exactly? Sorry
Description: "11 seconds, 200 photos. I used my Canon 814E as a still camera in 1973, shooting many different subjects. What do you recall?"
Sensational
Incredible
I'm using the Eumig Mark S-710D primarily because of its dual gauge capability and the ease with which the gate apertures can be enlarged. It's also variable speed, so easy to set at 16⅔ FPS for 50Hz land. I use a small diffused 12v led in place of the original 100w lamp.
Hello Mr Hardwick. Which projector is that? I'd like to build myself a 8mm scanning setup, similar to yours. Its hard to find suitable projectors that can be easily converted for scanning. Many thanks
Why don’t we just say computer program instead of personifying it wrongly as “AI”?
I am a Lo-Fi kind of person when it comes to 8mm movie film. I view it on a 1960’s era movie projector. I don’t digitize it so it doesn’t go on line. A projector is a tool just as is an AI app is just a tool. It’s not magic.
Many thanks for the info, Tom. It would be great to see more examples of your work in this domain.
I made this little AI demo to accompany an article I'm having published in the August 2024 Film and Video Maker mag. Without a video it's difficult to describe how you bring a cine film to a stop, choose a single frame, and then turn that frame into a little animated movie using AI.
Wonderful. Could you please say which AI software you’re using?
We’re in early days of AI phone apps, yet you’ll find there’s many that are free, quick and easy to download. I settled on AI Photo Enhancer and PicMa, because I was particularly interested in seeing what AI could do to clean up still frames taken from ancient 8mm cine films. Unless you cough up £30-£40/year these apps come with restrictions as to how many times you can use them in any given 24 hour period, but you can use them freely if you opt to ‘watch’ ads before the results are presented.
Very impressive Tom. A lot of old cine film will now get a "new life".
You're right, Rod. We're all at the very start of this journey.
It's interesting to imagine how this video fits into the overall flying experience on UTA in the 1980s. The video is basically a 15 minute advertorial for Marlboro, Ford, Bank of America, and Chivas Regal.
Very emotional and exceedingly sad Tom.
I used Kodachrome 40 for this film and I'm so glad I did, as my Agfa films from the same period are very magenta. You had to use the PMA wideangle on the Nautica under water to get sharp footage.
Nice. I wonder you had also used Agfachrome or even Sakurachrome what this could have looked like. The Nautica originally came with a special wide angel lens in its handle. Did you happen to use one in any of these shots?
In fact overscanning the Super 8 original means NOTHING is cropped out of the image. Win win
It seems there is very little lost in the crop.
Heyyy! What a result 🤎 Would you be interested in selling your aspheron?
Yes I would be interested in selling, and I have two to choose from. Email me tomrhardwick at gmail.com
The stabilisation is truly excellent. Remarkable as Tom puts it.
A lovely film
and still a great film.
Even though the 710D had only a single pin claw, with no back up if the sprocket hole was damaged, it is still a very steady frame.
Fascinating.
Thanks for sharing this brought back a fair few memories

50 years and America still hasn't caught up to Germany.
amazing difference ,
Shame there’s no shot in the film of you holding that rig. Very good shots though. We’re all so used to GoPros and their mountings, it’s easy to forget how imaginative and skilled one used to have to be to obtain shots like that. Loved the beginning and the “end” graphic.
Thanks Tim. The thing about go-karts is the instant feedback and the huge G forces in the corners. My camera and tripod weighed 4 kg on the straights, but weighed 4 kg sideways in the corners. That's my excuse for the others overtaking me.
Ich will mein deutsches Deutschland wieder zurück!
Ü40 langt schon 😁
Amazing to think I'm only a few years older than my Dad in this. And amazing seeing Michael speaking, I don't have many memories of him, unfortunately.
Glad you liked seeing it Josh. Video is such an accurate memory.
@@tomrhardwick thank you for sharing. More importantly, thank you for immortalising that ski jacket on my mum 😆
Schöne und ruhigere Zeiten als Heute 💗
Thank you. Yes, quieter times than today
Sure thing Will. Can I see the final outcome one day?
