MOVO Gimbal Head Improvement
Short video showing how to disassemble and clean a MOVO budget gimbal head. Gimbal heads work great for larger telephoto lenses keeping them balanced and wont droop like on a standard ball head mount. You can keep the knobs loose for tracking wildlife or lock it into position for standard shooting. Hope you enjoy!

DIY 8" NEWTONIAN TELESCOPE COMPLETE BUILD
Переглядів 39 тис.4 роки тому
In this video I show you how to build an 8" Newtonian reflector telescope. I go over the different parts of a telescope and show you how it can be built with parts and material that can be found at most hardware stores. Main components can be ordered online at various websites. Mirror set: D203F800 Primary Mirror Secondary Mirror purchased on Ebay for $115 USD Focuser: 2" Orion 13039 Crayford-s...
God bless you, Sir. Great job!
25:36 I'm extremely sorry, but at that point, if that WING NUT slid across that mirror and caramed off the side .... I would have cried not because of feeling sorry for you.I would be crying because of laughter .... how stupid a smart person can be. Zero foresight 😂
Now thats a very pretty telescope.i to use an Orion 8xlt newtonion on my Meade Lx 85 goto .mount.
Now thats one very pretty Reflector
Why buy something you have to dissemble repair then reassemble🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ I went and bought the Wimberley mkii so sturdy and strong and very fluid in its action👍👍👍👍
Cost, cost, cost, my friend! I think I paid $80-$90, and the Wimberley was over $300 if I remember correctly. Don't get me wrong, I wish I could afford high quality, but I can't.
This is informative and helpful. Thank you for your effort. 👍
Great!
They use a white colored thread locker on the base bolt. Put the base of the gimbal in a glass of boiling water for 15 minutes and the bolt comes out really easy. I had previously tried a large breaker bar with a 5.5mm hex bit and I couldn't move it. I tried a 1150 ft/lb impact gun and still nothing. The boiling water does the trick and the bolt comes out easy.
Hello, Sir! Could you please upload pictures and preferably a video of how the telescope delivers so we can see what quality it is? To see is it worth to build one and to enjoy the view it delivers. Thank you in advance!
Great job on your Dob! You have a knack for building, you should try a truss dob next. I have several reflectors, and just got an Apertura AD8. Using a Dob is a whole new world to me but I've only had it out once due to bad weather. I think I will catch on quickly! Congrats on your telescope, Clear skies! Soon here too I hope.
Thanks for the compliment! If I ever build a larger one, it will probably be a truss style.
@@scottschuette74I would like to build a truss dob 18-20 or so. I'm happy with what I have, so not that important.
That's one very pretty Telescope.
Loctite and super-glue break down at over 120° so put a meaty soldering iron (dry) on the screw head rather than immersing in boiling water. The screw will not get as hot as the soldering iron bit, the mass of metal is too great. All screws are metric. The heads are not Phillips but JIS. Crescent wrenches are for plumbers to round off nuts with.
Thank You Professor jeff 😆 🤣
We could have some testing
I am certain we are twins. I was FLABERGASTED when I saw this video. I used the same sliders making my mount. I didn't even know who "Dobson" was then. This is incredible man. Great work. I will be adding the furniture wax ASAP!
Whould u please cast a video on a refletor mirror... please..🙏
What are you wanting to know about the mirror? I'm happy to try and answer any questions. And maybe I could put together a video explaining some of the details.
Sir i want to know about mirror diameter and thickness and silver polising also... cause of we have not here a big harware store where can we made this... details on mirror making and silver polishing..thank u
So I bought the mirror already made. The details are in the description where I bought it.
Thanks a lot for making the video.. i was w8ing for that...LOVE FROM INDIA..☺️
How well do you like your telescope?
The scope itself performs really well, but I would like to come up with an improved design for the base so you can make small adjustments.
@@scottschuette74 I saw a video where a guy made a round compass with markings for degrees and placed it on the base. Turn the base to North and turn the scope to where a star or sky object is located based on what the app tells you. Pretty cool.
I'm planning to build a similar telescope and I am searching for parts. I'm guessing your primary mirror was spherical. Are you happy with it so far?
Ya it works really well. From what I read at the time when I built it, spherical is more than adequate for this size.
@@scottschuette74 Greetings and good night, congratulations on the project, it turned out very well, where did you get the info that for that spherical size it is better than parabolic? I ask you because I have read on several sites and supposedly the parabolic is better for large sizes.
@Leslye Del Valle I don't remember where I got the information from on the difference in mirrors. I just remember that for an 8" diameter, there is little to no difference. I would guess if you moved up to a 12" mirror, you would want to go with a parabolic shape.
VERY helpful, Thanks. This gimbal head is on my wishlist, so it’s Great to know what to expect when I get it.
That thump at the end was painful.. be sure to add some cushioning in that point before the mirror gets damaged
Every single DIY telescope channel doesn't show a single picture or talk about the quality. No one wants an expensive tube in the corner that does nothing. Waste of time, you're deceiving people. Who cares how to make one if it doesn't look good at all. Just buy one off amazon for the same price.
sure buddy, buy youself a telescope of the same price and try doing some astrophotography with it. im sure it will look great.
@@theterribleanimator1793 I built my own and bought one, what have you done huh? My comment was spot on, these idiots don't show results and sheep like you eat it up. DIY would be better if we had results.
Good job, one the most impressive I’ve seen on UA-cam. You just won yourself a subscriber. Btw, no offense, in Genesis 1:1 the word heaven was in it’s singular form, not plural it said in the beginning God created the heaven. Please check it out. I’m only for the truth and nothing but the whole truth! Alleluia! Amen.
Thank you very much! I do understand the discrepancy with the word heaven. I was raised Lutheran and I'm guessing the translation we used added the s. To me it means exactly the same thing and in modern English it sounds better. Thanks again!
@@scottschuette74 yea it’s all out of love. Nevertheless, your telescope is awesome my brother 🔭
Thanks
This was really cool and much much better than the other videos out there! I just wish you could explain the parts in more detail for the brand new comers
Why not just make the main tube out of 10" PVC pipe used for exterior drain pipes? Doesn't take moisture and no need for the fiber glass work.
Way more expensive! But is an option.
Much better then my approach with a similar scope. I took pieces cardboard boxes, folded them, and shoved them between the 2 boards. Another thing that helped a lot was to take 3 rare earth magnets, and place them on the top board, right over were the ball bearings ride. This provided quite a bit of “tension” making the bearings more stable and keep them from moving side to side. Its good enough for what i use the scope for. But eventually im going to laminate the top board with ebony star and use teflon pads on the bottom. Fot the pivot, i plan on using a tapered bearing (the type you find on your vehicle hubs).
Wonderful scope and awesome build. Thank you. I have been sitting with parts for a 12" newtonian (12" F/5 GSO mirrror with 70mm secondary, also GSO), mirror cell and 2" eyepieces and all for well over a year (And the pandemic made things worse). I had to 3D print the secondary cell - so made the design myself but the 14" tube - something which I assumed will be easy - turned out to be the long pole after all. 14" is not so common in the PVC and so I am planning to get it done with steel rings (also doubling up as baffles) and with a 1mm aluminium skin. The paint job on your scope gave me so many ideas and I already "subscribed" my daughter to paint on top of the skin and she is jumping around brimming with ideas. Thank you so much for inspiring us. And BTW, am your 100th subscriber . Cheers and clear skies.
Thank you so very much! I am shocked that I have gotten over 14k views and 100 subscribers. I am glad my video has helped so many people get into this wonderful hobby. Hopefully I can get out soon and get some pictures with my scope but up here in Michigan it is way too cold even though I saw Trevor from astrobackyard go out in -14° C. He is TRULY dedicated to his craft.
The Video seems to be great and useful but can you translate it into Arabic so we can benefit from it my greetings
Do you think 3D printed pads would work instead of the adhesive ones? Then you could print them around the bolts. Nice job, btw.
Thank you, I would think 3D printed ones would work. You can make a full ring and attach it with double sided foam. Just make sure the plastic is nice and smooth so it reduces any friction.
What's model on your Mowo?
There is only one model. I wouldn't bother with the Movo. I bought a similar but slightly better Andoer (one of many that are re-branded Neewer gimbal heads) that also needed dismantling, to remove the thick gunk, and re-greasing. The Neewer range have better internal components and far superior Allen screws to the nasty Phillips screws on the Movo. I am delighted with my (renovated) Andoer. ua-cam.com/video/zt9nkiBMlYQ/v-deo.html
👍
@@alangeorgebarstow The Movo model is superior, the type of screw has nothing to do with it, the quality of the Movo is in the bearing system it carries on the ball joints. The Neewer/Andoer system is based on bushings, and that does not give fluidity or reliability.
@@Burning_. Well, I have had my Andoer for some time now and it is in constant use. The fluidity is still exceptional and the reliability is unquestioned. If I did not trust it I would not use it to hold my Nikon D500 and Nikkor 200-500 zoom lens combination. I do trust it and it has not let me down.
@@alangeorgebarstow You can get a very good result from the one you have, but technically the Movo is far superior.
Wow, scott, you posted this on my 60th birthday! And I have to say after 7 minutes i think Im going to be 65 before you get this done. I really like the blurry close-up! You remind me of an old Chicago morning kid's show host named Ray Rayner ( whose birthday is actually the day before mine! ), But thanks anyhow.
Wow
How do I fix wobble in the top arm?
Once you take it apart make sure the bolt is completely clean. Mine had a superglue substance on it that I had to clean off. And then adding thicker grease to the shaft and mating parts should take up the slack if it is still sloppy. And when you are tightening the bolt spin the arm as you tighten until it is spinning free with no slop. Also back sure the bolt is backed off a bit so the knob can move freely. Hope that helps.
A lot of cheap primary mirrors on the web are spherical rather than parabolic ground.. does that make a big difference to image quality?
Not really, I read it only makes a difference when you get into larger diameters, say 12" and above.
this was a fantastic build log. i ordered a small mirror (114mm ) from china. but many of the materials are not available in my country ( at least i think so ) . making a telescope will be very tough. or might be a dream for me forever.
Good luck on the build!
soon I will build myself one.. from recycled materials soon I'll up to yt maybe it can help you
Not only are you a skilled telescope maker, you also don't put ads in your videos
Thank you! This was my first video I shot and I am not looking to be monetized. I truly wanted to get some good quality info out there to help out us beginners to the hobby.
It true you have no ads but ads also paid a on your UA-cam
can i get a link to the pads u used?
They are called furniture sliders. The most popular brand name is Supersliders. I think I used 2 1/2" square and round.
That painting on your tube so beautiful. I wish i had printable version of it to wrap around my tube.
Thank you! It really wasn't that difficult. I used black, purple, and blue spray paint switching between the 3. If you get too much of one color go over top with another. And the stars just splatter white paint all over, be sure to practice on something.
Superb quality telescope 🔭❤️ wow, thank you for sharing... 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for the kind words1
THanks! because of thi si'm already buying the pieces
Chingon! super cool
I have a new video coming out soon with an improved design for the base to help it move easier.
Thank you ❤️. Very informative video
great job... keep it up, sir.
Thank you for comment.
Seu espelho primário é esférico ou parabólico?
It is spherical, smaller size is ok. I used google translate hope this helps.
@@scottschuette74 Excuse me! I bought a similar mirror and I am still assembling my telescope, I would like to know if the optical quality is satisfactory. Thanks for the info!
@@nordestinosbrasil6223 Mine seems ok, I don't have anything to compare to so I am sure it could be better, but good enough for the price.
Thank you very much, this will be a useful bit of resource for me. Stay healthy!
Thanks for sharing. I got the chance to witness a rocket launch in 2018. Incredible experience. I shared a pretty cool video of the journey to my channel.
Sweet, I'll check it out!
This dude has cometed the same thing in every telescope video ever
thanks for the video. I ve just checked that primary mirror prices are jumping when you go to a 10 inch one!! Do you have some good advice where to buy as I ve found only one place on the net.
I have found them on Amazon, ebay, Edmund Optics, and AliExpress, There isn't a whole lot of suppliers out there so it is tough to find good prices unfortunately. Thanks for the compliment!
Grind out your own mirror. It's not very hard at all. Just stick to the details. Many sites here to guide you in the grinding... look up Dobson videos on how he ground out his mirrors. Nothing fancy.
Sir please tell where to get primary mirror
You can purchase them either on amazon or ebay. Just compare prices.
Please i am very poor but i love astronomy and space science . So please give me telescope as a gift Please sir help
I wish I could friend! I have only used it a couple of times myself.
Where are you located ?
hello sir whats the specs of the eyepiece.. i cant find the item on ebay
In the description is the eyepieces I purchased. The kit has a 25mm, 12.5mm, and a 6.5mm I think. It also comes with a 2x barlow. I would recommend spending as much money as you can on eyepieces that have a large field of view. You will enjoy the craft more.
