Niles Canyon Railway with Robert Dollar Co. 3 operating 9/15/24
Robert Dollar Co. 3 was selected to power the final steam excursions until October. It’s nice to see this engine again after 3 years in other locations including Farwell bridge. See clips of the engine making great time, steaming hard, and hear its Alco 5 chime whistle!
Location includes Niles, Farwell bridge, Brightside Crossing, and Sunol.
Due to construction work between Brightside and Sunol, the train got there first so I don’t have a clip of it arriving.
History: The No. 3 was built for the Walter A. Woodard Lumber Company of Cottage Grove, Oregon, in November 1927 by American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York. It was built as a wood burner, and is reportedly the last wood burning steam locomotive built for service in the USA. Through various owners, amazingly the locomotive always retained its number 3.

A spot I haven’t visited before on the Niles Canyon Railway so it was a treat to see one of their steam engines there since it’s my first time visiting the location. Bell was rung to alert the railfans to be safe.

It’s nice to see Robert Dollar Company number 3 back in service it’s been a long time glad to see her running again especially with her original whistle that was fixed by Rizzoli locomotive works having it fitted with an all new whistle valve

I dont understand something, why do some people like mid non Pittsburgh act like I wasn’t around for the reactivated dash 8s and 9s on Csx, I tried my best to see many as I could in 2023-2024! :( Do you ever feel bad for class 1s not being like the 2000s and 2010s, I wish Csx could be more open minded one day about having variety like the other railroads are, + I feel like every shortline needs to have dash engines or maybe make all us states have more infrastructure to handle more trains! ??

@@SPNGLovato18 Oh that’s okay, I haven’t pass at all either but I just practice with my mom and buying a car is so expensive and I can’t even handle tickets or accidents where a vehicle were to get damaged.

Why does foreign power attract railfans to do bad things? , that’s the part I don’t understand, like when I see rare power I would never mess with it, even if it’s a sd70ace!
Hey Andy? I don’t understand something, if a Csx locomotive can’t come to California why does Bnsf sometimes send their locomotives to be on foreign power in other states including Michigan? Does Csx not trust the other railroads and other railroads trust them with their locomotives! I really don’t understand!!!!
@@Buckskin1290 CSX doesn’t have near trackage rights to California while BNSF does in Chicago or something. Sending foreign power like rare CSX engines to other places causes chaos, as it attracts railfans to trespass yards to see them, steal any parts from them like horns and numberboards, get in their cabs somehow, vandalize it, anything. This happens with a lot of Union Pacific & BNSF engines, so they don’t want to risk having to pay all the damages for engines that aren’t theirs. And even if CSX did send their engines, it’s basically ones you don’t like being the ET44AH. Foreign power is getting less common near where I live as I used to see a ton from late 2022 to early 2023, one being a CSX ES44AH, NS 1068, an NS Dash 9, UP 6379, and other stuff
@@SPNGLovato18 I hope people dont mess up Union Pacific/ Bnsfs/Ns or cns dash 9s if they ever take a visit to Michigan or Chicago or in the east coast again, because when I saw Bnsf 5285 in Michigan and it came be to Bnsf just fine, nothing happened to it on its visit.
You know the f units are BESSEMER AND LAKE ERIE the sd9s are already rare but this lineup is something else you should go back great video
Hey Andrew, about the crews, who said they can’t do horn shows or horn salutes? Did the FRA ban them a majority of the time? + does a horn salute or hornshow have to be a choice?
@@RAtheGoodRailfanner_888 let’s see, horns are mainly to alert people, and doing too much hornshows on a very busy line can alert other engineers or people that something is in danger causing delays when they realize there isn’t. And this can get the crew fired from the job. It’s their choice if they want to do hornshows like I said but honestly I couldn’t care less if I didn’t get one most of the time.
