(05) Snap action - ClyphX Pro Tutorials

It is probably the most popular feature of ClyphX Pro. Snap aka snapshots. They are very powerful and helpful for a more musical workflow. But snapshots in ClyphX are more powerful, you can do smooth transitions between settings and you can even have a sl...

(00) Installation - ClyphX Pro Tutorial Series
Your tutorials have been incredibly helpful. Thank you! I'm still on the fence about picking this thing up, but seeing your live looping setup was really inspirational. I've been looking through the docs and I haven't come across away to reverse a clip and /2 or x2 the BPM of a clip. Do these actions exist? It'd be super useful to have them to avoid using the looper device altogether. Thanks again for all the work you put into these vids!
Hey @analogueghostmusic, thank you for your kind words. As far as I know, those options are unfortunately not available in the LOM, so there is no way to access them from an external control.
@@clyphxpro thanks so much for the reply! I figured that was the case. Will have to figure out a different method, then haha
Excellent. Will you make more tutorials?
oh yeah, totally! I've moved and I have to rebuild the place where I shot them. But I do monthly Q&As on my patreon!
how do you get this "rename clip" window with ableton logo when you rename ? Is this a max for live device ? I don't find it on their site. I mean this on this time... ua-cam.com/video/OrIjhcZSWiI/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared&t=1308
yes. check out my favourite tools tutorial
I'm still at a loss to understand ClyphX Pro ....... it's a way to put code into clips? .... what? ..... why? .... i never even use clips, i'm an arrangement guy.... isn't M4L way more powerful?.... i mean, you can make devices to do anything with M4L, right? ClyphX Pro is just for putting snippets of code in clips? And that's worth 67 euro? What am i missing here? Can it do something you can't do with a M4L device? Please explain!
Hi @retromograph3893, Both softwares are fundamentally different piece of software in terms of approach and use cases. theoretically you can achieve most also with Max4Live as well, I would say the main difference is the interface. With ClyphX you simply write a snippet of code to do something where in Max4Live you have to create a device. Also a Max4Live is always bound to be a device on 1 Track, where ClyphX is operating generally. go watch my crash course tutorial to get an overview. But of course ClyphX is not everyone, same as Max4Live is not as useful for everybody.
@@clyphxpro Thanks for the info! The fact that ClyphX can work globally is indeed and advantage / selling point. So is it fair to say ClyphX is good for people who want to achieve stuff without getting too heavily into the whole node-based M4L approach?
@@retromograph3893 I have to point out that Max and ClyphX is a totally different type of software. Thus it is not really possible to compare those two.
Very interesting! One thing i don't understand though: i thought all this stuff could be achieved with Max & M4L devices. Could you explain what ClyphX Pro offers above and beyond what's possible with Max? Because ClyphX Pro is quite expensive (67 euro)!
Hi @retromograph3893, see my answer on video 02. And by the way, Max is way more expensive.
You are an absolute champion of the clyph x game bro! Cheers
Super awesome!! Thank you so much!!!
very helpful, thanks
Great video, great channel
so weird if there is not channel select buttons. Before device selecting there should be channel (track) selecting button. So that if i choose spesific track then knobs should show track level with the lights.. So i can not use this midi controller because first i need to select my tracks (not using my mouse) then select devices and change parameters.
you can have as many channel buttons as you want with `[] 1 / SEL` or with names: `"BASS" / SEL` and you can use `[] LEFT` and `[] RIGHT` as well to move to the next or previous track. You can use ClyphX Bindings to display the level with the LED Ring.
Is it possible to use Clyphx to record a loop section for a specific number of times and then automatically stop?
I do not understand the question. You mean a loop section in the arrangement view?
@ Yes, let’s say I want to record 4 takes and choose the best without worrying about stopping the recording and cleaning up the unfinished recording while I was reaching for the keyboard
Thank you for making Clyphx continue and update and for the quality tutorial !!!
Thanks man appreciate all you do
Thank you, Sir!
Awesome! I was looking for a scale change few weeks ago and now it is there. I can complete my live set preparation. You guys read my mind :)))
Thank you!

thank you for this!! my question: i have a clip that is named [verse] ARM ON -- this obviously arms to record when i play the clip, and the clip's name is verse. but if i try to trigger that clip from a different x-clip, and i don't want to say CLIP(2), but would like to reference the name, CLIP("verse") doesn't work, i need to do CLIP([verse] ARM ON) --- have you noticed this, and do you have a workaround? the problem is that if i then add more to the action list on the verse clip, i have also change the name of that clip on the triggering x-clip. thanks in advance for any insight
unfortunately there is no real workaround. it is either the exact name or position.
@@clyphxpro thank you
what if the clip is named something like [verse] "bass" / PLAY -- when i put this in quotes, the quotes that are already there mean it doesn't work. do you know what i'm supposed to do to nest it properly? i tried changing the ones inside to single quotes but that didn't work. thanks!!
@@clyphxpro do you mind if i ask another question? i'm trying to use CLIP ENVCLR to delete pitchbend envelope i've created on a clip. i can get it to delete things like pan and volume, per the manual, but i can't get it to delete any midi ctrl envelopes like pitch bend or mod wheel. any thoughts? thanks so much for your time!!
@@charlieotto Hi there! As far as I know and tested it is indeed not possible to access the Midi Control aspects of a clip. I'll put that on the feature request list.
Variables don't seem to work with Encoder Bindings? do you know about this? Cheers
Hi Sam, well I use Variables and Bindings all the time. How are you trying to use them? Can you give an example which does not work?
@@clyphxpro I'm trying to have Encoder Bindings change to the selected Drum cell, when I change via hotswap. So everytime I hot swap a drum out (e.g. kick for example) the econder bindings will automatically bind to the new parameters. Its a mind fuck HA
Is data for which tracks are armed saved within a snapshot?
yes, that is possible. However not by default. you need to tweak two things: Use the MIX+ modifier and in the Preferences.txt file set the STORE_EXTENDED_MIX_SETTINGS to true then arm and monitoring state will be stored in a snapshot
Wouldn't it be easier to use clips and just map the midi controller to those instead of using a separate text file?
Hi there, not really. There are two very essential differences. First, X-Controls are global, so for any new project they are the same, with your approach you would have to have those clips and you would have to re-map them everytime you start a new project. Second, X-Controls work without starting playback. plus, your approach the triggering of actions would be dependent on the launch setting of the clips. there are always many possibilities to realise stuff....
lovely!
Clyphx G is in this video. Great. All other of your videos are speedup by me to 35 Fps. But not this clip. It already high speed. Thanks.
On scene your ClyphX clips should start at slot 30. Now scene 10 will play and start also the clyphX clip at track1 slot 10
The []SETSTOP action in arrangement view is amazing (working in Live12)
the LOM browser you made... SO GOOD!
Thanks man!
coooooool
thx tobi!
What is that controler you are using at 5:30 and how did you created the labels on the buttons?
it is a simple Launchpad X from Novation and yes, I made those labels myself. I think I have to do a video of how to soon....
@@clyphxpro yes please! That would be awesome. The labels look pretty cool 😎
Thanks again!
This is really well done! Thank you!

@@clyphxpro yeah cool I just saw that!
Very helpful! But you should add the Windows install file path Users/[username]/Documents/Ableton Thanks
thanks man. yeah I know, Windows is not mentioned, but those paths are also clearly in the manual. The links in the description might be something,
@@clyphxpro great idea! Thanks again!

Hey man, I am living in Luxembourg. And I do 1:1 zoom sessions as well. Just drop me a message on discord or send a mail to contact at schlapbe dot com...
Very nice video, thank you very much. How can I use the fades and knobs? In other words, when I have to deal with Continuous Parameters, what should my command look like?
I think Bindings is what you are looking for. You mean something similar to the mapping function? That is an addition extension. I have not finished my video about bindings but there is going to be one.
@@clyphxpro Since I have the free version from GitHub, I couldn't find an encoder_bindings.txt file anywhere, as I saw you using in your video "(06) a crash course - ClyphX Pro Tutorial Series". I have a txt file called "UserSettings.txt". When I program buttons in this txt file, they work fine. Do you have any idea how to program faders and knobs in my case? My goal is to be able to control the 8 knobs of the Audio Effect Rack on a selected channel of Ableton Live using the knobs of my MIDI controller.

Just what I was looking for. Subscribed
I do not understand what your are doing in the METRONOME example at 7:14 where you bring up this little window that says LIVE and you are typing METRO into it. Where does this come from? As well - HOW have you managed to get lettering and numbers into Launchpad?? Or is this in a later tute? That is friggin awesome!
Well, the popup window is actually avmax4live device, which I key-mapped. Super useful, I covered that in my favourite tools tutorial. And those letters on the Launchpad are simply printable transparent stickers.
also a question - how did you do the lettering on the launchpad buttons? they're gorgeous! best of luck in your move :)
Hi @kyleturgeonfilms, they are simple printable transparant stickers.
thank you so much for this wonderful series! you did an excellent job clarifying a very complex subject. having watched the whole series, i feel very prepared to begin using Clyph-X in my live set. sincerely appreciate all the energy you put into making these videos, and posting them publicly on youtube ❤
Thanks for making these vids! It's really helpful that you are explaining in these small steps and building to more complex. The [ ] to wake up Clyph idea always plays in my head now haha. Very happily subscribed!
Thank you for this video. I am going to buy this software thorough your affilate link. I hope you house move is going smooth and easy. Best of luck.
Thank you! These tutorials are amazing and ClyphX is a total gamechanger! Subscribed instantly I'm using Ableton to play live and for each song in my setlist I arm a different track where I've got an instrument rack loaded with all my sounds needed for that song (1 song = 1 track = 1 instrument rack). With ClyphX I've found a very smooth way to do UP and DOWN between different tracks and arm the one I need for each song. However, to save CPU, I'd like to disable all instrument racks except the one needed for the song I'm playing. How would you go about doing that? (I basically want each instrument rack to be "on" only when the track it is in is armed, and be "off" if the track is not armed)
Maybe its too late for that but what about this solution? This will replace the loaded instrument rack with another instrument rack of your choice. [] "Track Name"/DEV(1) SEL; WAIT 3; LOADUSER "Instrument Rack Name.adg": SETSTOP
Love these videos! Quick question, what is the function you're using at 7:14 "Shift+X" to trigger actions via a pop up window?
That is a tool I described in my favourite tools video.
Maybe im missing it...but do you have any videos of you creating music using clyphx? I went through some videos and it still isnt clear to me how you use clyphx in practice. Im thinking i want to learn clyphx for live looping. Trying to evaluate if your resources are the direction i should go.
So ClyphX is great for live looping. I have planned videos for the live looping practise with Note Trigger Racks. I think in my crash course there is a small bit, where I record something. I have a series for live looping in particular planned, but that will be up somewhat this late spring. You should join the discord or consider becoming a patreon, although my VIP tier seats are full at the moment, but I can squeeze in a individual zoom session, if you would be interested.
Hi, thanks a lot for these very useful tutorials! I was just wondering what's the small ableton window you throw your commands at ? ( ⇧+⌘+X)
Hey thanks for this post ! I have this specific action : $SNAP_EUCL_BUTTON$ = "BASS"/ADDCLIP; "BASS"/CLIP NAMED [SNAP] '"BASS"/SNAP DEV(ALL)'; It creates a new Clyphx clip for triggering a snap action on a specific track. I removed some part for simplification purpose (I removed this middle part : %TRACK%/CLIP LOOP OFF; %TRACK%/CLIP END 1.1.3;) But I got a problem when I try to add a variable for track name ("BASS") using %TRACK% variable. The variablilized action looks like : $SNAP_BUTTON$ = %TRACK%/ADDCLIP; %TRACK%/CLIP NAMED [SNAP TRACK] '%TRACK"%/SNAP DEV(ALL)' ; I am using single quote so that %TRACK% keeps its quotes in the final clip name. The result is a new clip created with a name that looks like : [snap track 2024-01-18 14:26:40] "EUCL"/snap dev The first problem is that I don't understand why "(all)" is missing at the end of the clip name ... My second problem is that I cannot variablize the [SNAP TRACK] part using [SNAP %TRACK%] that gives me something like : [snap {s0} 2024-01-18 14:31:12] snap "EUCL"] '"EUCL"/snap dev which I cannot understand why, but I guess that it is related to the NAMED Clyphx implementation. I can handle the second problem but I need help to solve the first one. Any debugging suggestion before I try user actions ? Thanks a lot
Ok It seems that a space between DEV and (ALL) resolves my problem. I don't really know if my comment is still relevant here ...I can remove it if you wish.
for my Second problem I used NAMES instead of NAMED, so that the snap name is of the form "TRACK - SCENE_NAME"
Awesome work! I'm 100% sure i would use ClyphX and all your stuff, IF i hadn't fully switched from Ableton to Bitwig (and my own custom made Touch OSC controller) :D But it's really cool to see what's possible with ClyphX and your videos are really fascinating to watch, despite me no longer being 'part' of Ableton.
The fact that Ableton and the live music tech industry is so far behind the frameworks necessary for musicians quickly and easily build custom interfaces like this is embarrassing for them. Thank you for taking the time to build essential infrastructure like this Schlapbe!
Wishing you a swift and smooth move! Great work so far!!! Will the grid listener handle collapsed and expanded groups?
Not yet! Good point!!
