I finally finished the movie in it's entirety in one sitting. After nearly 50 years of somehow not watching this rubbish, I managed to stay with it all the way to the end one Sunday night in early June 2024. This movie is garbage. Essentially, it is Cimino's meandering treatise on what happened to America during the Vietnam War era using people from a small Northeastern town. The movie's in 3 parts and it goes something like this (Cimino, freaking spoon-fed his allegory in 3 one hour long acts): 1st hour: goofy, reckless, stupid white people in a Northeastern American town frolic before three of them leave to volunteer going to Vietnam 2nd hour: Vietnam as a violent, bloody, sick twisted piece that made no fucking sense whatsoever. Cimino's shock therapy. Really awful Vietnam war bullshit fantasy. 3rd hour: All the men who went to Vietnam are fucked up. Bonus nausea for the cast singing 'God Bless America' at the close of the movie. That's how you know this fucking movie was an examination of America during the Vietnam era. In 1979, the movie won 5 Academy awards and made news when people were leaving midway through the film during the Russian roulette scenes. Critics gave this thing a scrotum bath calling it 'powerful' and disturbing and mesmerizing...wtf. This film as an allegory to the social attitudes Americans experienced during that time was essentially a finger down the throat of America's collective consciousness. The movie was a vomiting of the confusion and violence of that time. This is why people dug it even though most of the fucking movie made no sense and felt spotty, like maybe they just made shit up on camera and put together the film with edits and that stupid weepy guitar score. It's like group hypnosis or something... In any case, I don't think I'm a better person for watching it except that I know I'll never watch it again and I don't recommend anyone else watch it either. It's a fucking piece of shit of a movie with really overwrought acting with a script that had no connective tissue...well...except the brave Robert DeNiro who wore his fucking Class A, jump boots and Green Beret through 2/3 of the movie.

I think it had some good actors but, it looked very high schoolish with Paltrow trying to act. She didn't fit in with the professionals. They should have got a different actress.

Love this 1934 movie so much, I've seen it umpteen times. Perfect cast, funny, romantic, everything needed for a great story. Claudette Colbert, so compellingly beautiful, and what an actress! A real natural style that you never tire of viewing. My favorite scenes, there are so many, are the hitchhike where Claudette Colbert says, "I'll stop a car and I won't use my thumb" as she raises her skirt to adjust her stockings exposing gorgeous gams, and the wedding scene at the end. Wonderful motion picture deserving of all the awards it received.
