    This Amp is a piece o gem..I really dont care what the G.A.S. conoiseurs say about it..The Amp with the fdd tube buton is fantastic..Place a Blosom Point in front of it and you are in tube heaven..And the most important this Amp takes every pedal like a mother the child..And i really use many boutique pedals,mostly Amps In A Box to catch the songs i want imediateIly..I have the MG100DFX for 450 Usd since 2005 among others,like Koch Jupiter 40w hybrid tube combo,Messa Boogie Mark 20w all tube combo,Laney 10w tube combo,But i always use this as my main amp (miked) for my gigs and Koch and Messa for back up or stereo combinations..With my well known band,we play in open summer festivals,we play in basketballstadiums,universities and clubs as well..The buzz you mension is normal because this thing is alive..Billy Gibons once said that a pedal or an Amp without noise is dead body and guess what lately he started to use budget pedals..If you don't know how to use Solid State staff correct go and spend money for nothing to buy expensive and mostly useless tube gear..Can you crank a Fender Deluxe Brown or Black panel in a Club or in a Beach Bar?of course not cause the audience will bleed from the ears..Whell this Amp you can crank it and it has a very pleasant sound fully cranked..Last but not least is built like a tank,doesnt need maintenance and is very reliable for 18 years now with no problem at all.. The fan makes a noise for about 30 secs when you turn it on until it gets hot and after a hiss of quiet (tube style maybe? i don't know and i don't care)..Many Pro Travel Mucisians in Nasville use this exactly Amp for Blues cause it pairs great with the Nobels Odr1 and with the TS9..Thats all folks..Spend your money to clever staff and learn how to use it.. p.s. I bought a second one from an irrelevant for 150 Euro..Keep Rockin..

    The JVM combo weighs a metric ton. The head not so much and the 4x12 cab has wheels. Great amp regardless. Have the head and it is quite versatile. Always never minded about tears and nicks in a cab. The head should be nick free. The combos and especially heavy one will get beaten up. They are very awkward to carry, and putting wheels on them and rolling across a parking lot will unseat the tubes and vibrate all of the internals. Open back is another diss-advantage and the loss of bass is evident on an open back cab. Otherwise fantastic amp

    Does it cleans up well with the volume knob rolled back? Also does it retain a bit of Tele tone ? I'm on the fence between this and Chopper T because I feel like this pickup sounds a bit too harsh for my kind of songs but I feel like Chopper T isn't quite as harsh as I want it judging from the demos even though I like the tone very much. I usually play blues, punk, grunge, hard rock

      Hey thank you for the question. It doesn't clean up great but its not choked like some other pickups I have turned the volume on. also I do use that technique even though its not the best. As far as Tele tone I would say its pretty far away from the tele tones that I know. But then again my experience is mainly with squiers and other friends tele's with aftermarket pickups. I would say it would be great for all distortion purposes. to attempt an answer I think the Chopper T may be the more versatile choice. Hope this helps. Ken:D

      Ok make sure that the Power soak can handle the Ohms of the amplifier. Than you need a speaker cable and you plug that into the output section of the amplifier. From their you plug the speaker cable into the corresponding input jack on the Power soak. Then there is probably a speaker cable on the speaker with a 1/4 inch jack Plug that into the appropriate jack on the Power soak. Then turn the big dial down and turn your amp on Then raise the big dial till you get sound. Then adjust it to your liking. Hope this helps. Ken:D

    I agree with you on the DiMarzio Super Distortion vs Duncan Distortion. I've always loved the Super D, and it is a fine pickup, very widely used, legendary, with a lot of historical significance, being as it was the first popular aftermarket pickup. But the Duncan Distortion has withstood the test of time better than the Super Distortion. There are a number of reasons for this, but here are a few. For one, even though the Duncan Distortion was first introduced to the world in 1980, it is tighter and has more bite and far better harmonics than the Super Distortion, three aspects which would make it a more relevant pickup as the highs rolled on. By 1985 players left and right were ditching DiMarzios for Duncans. They were just more relevant. A JB is far more versatile than a Super Distortion and has as much crunch, better harmonics, cuts through a mix better, and is tighter, but a Duncan Distortion has the icing on the cake of being even tighter with even more snarl and bite. It's still fun to pop a Super Distortion into an ax and play classic rock, but a JB or Duncan Distortion has more balls and power and harmonics and can get you into more of a contemporary headspace because of these qualities. They always say, "It's the player, not the gear," but a player will always do a better job with better gear. Put Mario Andretti in a go-cart, and he's still Mario Andretti. But he won't be winning any stockcar races. Pickups are the engine of an electric guitar. You need a good engine to get up to speed. The Duncan Distortion is a V-12 Lamborghini engine.

      @downstairsgearnguitars-kc7uq 2 місяці тому

      Right on I can't believe how precisely you nailed the nail on the head. We are in complete agreement. And I wasn't part of a large group of guitar players so it was great to hear someone who knows how they migrated from the Dimarzios to Duncans. Thank you for your comment. Ken:D

  • @angusorvid8840
    @angusorvid8840 2 місяці тому

    These are both very solid pickups and I've used both. The Distortion is a JB with a ceramic mag. They otherwise share very similar DNA. The Distortion is raw but also very clear for such a high output pickup. The JB is more open, and that's natural for an alnico 5. The Distortion has a massive ceramic magnet and it's more tuned towards metal. I played on the Sunset Strip in the 80s and the JB was the single most popular pickup, followed by the Duncan Distortion, Custom, DiMarzio Super Distortion, X2N, MegaDrive, EMG 81, Bill Lawrence 500 XL, etc.

      Thank you for your question Reznap. I had Dreads like 4 years ago thats when some of these videos were made. They were Natural. to explain 2 years ago I quit UA-cam because I was going to be a normie. So Last year I decided to start a new UA-cam channel with the best old videos and creating new content too. Its a little confusing but basically you get a healthy mix of old and new videos. Have a great rest of your day. Ken :D

    • @downstairsgearnguitars-kc7uq
      @downstairsgearnguitars-kc7uq 4 місяці тому

      Hey Lionel thank you so much for your question. The answer to your question depends on how much you love power tube distortion. For me the answer is That I can get perfect tones for me at bedroom levels. But if you are very experienced and you absolutely need to melt your power stage then a lower wattage amp may be better in that situation. One more thing comes to mind and that is with an attenuator you can do anything you desire with this amp. Hope this helps. Ken :D

    I just picked up a DSL40 after trading in a bunch of gear that I wasn't using. My only real gripe is that the 4 channels don't have their own EQ's. In that regard, this amp really fits the bill. It might be too much amp for me though. I've seen it at $1999 at some of the online retailers, so it is considerably less expensive than its MESA competitors, and others. Money is tight for me too, so maybe one day. In the meantime, I am digging my first tube amp. Everytime I plug in, it's hard to believe the difference in sound.

      My best friend had the DSL40 and he lent it too me for some time I really enjoyed that amp. It sounded bigger and fuller than my DSL 401. I agree shared eq can be a bummer but definitly not a deal breaker. Have a great week dude. Ken :D

      @@downstairsgearnguitars-kc7uq $650 vs $1999. No complaints from me. I'm just having fun finding happy mediums in the volume/gain for all 4 channels so I can switch through them without touching anything. The overdrive pedal really helps in that regard in that I can ease back on the gain in the clean/crunch channel. Have a good one!
