Mourning for Hussain bin Ali and his companions begins on the first day of Muharram and reaches its peak at noon of Ashura. In the evening and in the evening of Ashura, this mourning continues under the name of the dinner ceremony of strangers. عزاداری محرم عزاداری و بزرگداشتی است که به مناسبت کشته شدن حسین بن علی و جمعی از یارانش در کربلا در سال 61 هجری قمری انجام می شود.
عزاداری حسین بن علی و یارانش از روز اول محرم آغاز می شود و در ظهر عاشورا به اوج خود می رسد. در غروب و شامگاه عاشورا این عزاداری با نام مراسم شام غریبان ادامه دارد. در روز دوازدهم محرم مراسمی به نام «سوم امام حسین» اجرا می شود. این نوع مراسم در شانزدهم محرم با نام «هفتم امام حسین» و در بیستم صفر با نام «اربعین» ادامه دارد. البته عزاداری حسین بن علی منحصر به ماه محرم نیست و در سایر روزهای سال نیز با توجه به فرهنگ و آداب و رسوم هر منطقه انجام می شود. مراسم عزاداری امام سوم شیعیان از دیدگاه شیعه بسیار مهم است و انجام آن عبادت است.
عزاداری محرم در روش های مختلف در مکان های مختلف عزاداری محرم علاوه بر ابعاد مذهبی، ابعاد سیاسی و اجتماعی نیز دارد. عزاداری شیعیان ایرانی در ماه محرم همیشه خودجوش بوده است
این مراسم روز سوم امام حسین می باشد و نمایش تشیع امام حسین توسط زنان قوم بنی اسد است
