ACDF 3 1/2 months follow up
Video documenting my recovery from ACDF, including returning to work and recreational activities, like disc golf, bike riding, hiking and basketball. I quickly go over what I have been doing between 6 weeks and 12 weeks and then what I have been doing for the last two week.
Also, when I say you will feel pretty good 6 weeks and close to normal 3 weeks, I meant to say 3 months, not weeks.
When I said "myeology", I meant to say "myelopathy".

      Hey Jason, I am doing pretty well. I am having a little degeneration of an adjacent disc. I am doing PT for it. Here is what I have learned. It is so important to keep active. When you are allowed to, make sure that you keep your neck flexible. There are videos on UA-cam for that. I think that it is also important to not lift anything really heavy. I was going really well, and then last September, I fell pretty hard and my neck got stiff and my arm started to tingle. It improved over time, but it didn't go away. Then about 7 months ago, I was feeling pretty good, so I lifted weights with my 17 year old son. I tried to curl too much weight, and my neck and arms got worse. They sent me for an MRI and I have been doing more PT. Slowly but surely it is a little better but it is still there. I am told that it may always be there. I do a ton of driving. I just drove from NJ to FL and back. No problem. Try to avoid wiping out (like me) and avoid heavy lifting (The kind of lifting that puts strain on your neck). Try to stay healthy as long as you can, brother. Good luck.

      @GregBikofsky ah. Thanks for the reply. My job is a truck driver delivering groceries kind why I asked. Was hit by a truck last December which exasperated the old herniation I had when in sleeper of a truck team driving. Just trying to figure out the future a little better. Whether to try another occupation rather than be a truck driver maybe. Unloading groceries and driving 11 hours day and working 3 extra a day. Dunno how well my body can handle all that long term or if continuing would be good or not. Was about 8 months after the wreck in pretty bad pain after 3 epidurals they finally agreed to do the surgery. Have some relief but still a good ammount of pain in my shoulder area and little in arm and some numbness still in hand. But more like a 3 level pain most days instead 8 most days like before surgery. Workmans comp covering it so far but then have hr lady misleading and lying to me and lawyers that don't seem to communicate well with me either....been a little daunting and frustrating dealing with all this but hoping to get better and not be too disabled in future etc. I usually drive about 600 miles a day and deliver 3 to 7 stores a day when working 6 days a week then get about 34 hours off to recoup and go again.

      @@JasonStone-m5i My old company had drivers come and go all day. From what I can see, the job is simply not healthy. I don't know if it is specifically hard on your neck. I guess it depends on what you have to do when you load and unload. But, holistically, it can't be healthy to drive that many miles day in and day out, right?

      @GregBikofsky I have herniated discs C5 and C6 in a lot of pain down my arm. Only started 2 months ago. I'm pushing for surgery Dr is trying to make me do physio etc to see if it gets better. The pain is insane I feel like I have a knife in my shoulder

      @@DS-wb2we I wouldn't push for surgery. These guys love to do surgery. If the doc is hesitant at all, I would put it off as long as possible. Why not try the PT. Wouldn't it be great if you could feel better with just PT. With me, I never had pain, just numbness and balance issues. The doctor told me that my condition was "life threatening". That was scary. If you don't trust your doctor, you could always get a second opinion. Where are you located?

      I am doing really well. I have had some tingling in my arm, but due to a little arthritis. I just started doing PT for that. But otherwise, I am doing very well. Two months is not that far along. Take care of yourself and do lots and lots of walking and drink lots of water and take good holistic care of yourself.

    • @GregBikofsky
      @GregBikofsky 2 роки тому

      Hi Bren, the first few days are very difficult. I remember drinking a lot of ice water and clear protein drinks. Maybe the eggs are causing phlegm? Some people have very mild egg allergies. Maybe that. Maybe try something else. Maybe chicken or tuna salad? He definitely should try to eat extra protein as that should help healing. I hope this helps.

    Thank you for your video, I'm heading into surgery 10/1/20 for a 360 multi level cervical corpectomy and fusion. It seems you didn't suffer to badly with dysphagia and were able to eat, your very lucky!! My surgeon warned me swallowing would be difficult as well as speaking for a few days afterwards. I'm curious how you feel about getting protein through whey and protein shakes?

    • @GregBikofsky
      @GregBikofsky 4 роки тому

      Yes, you can get a significant amount of protein from that, but I like to supplement with animal based protein as well, like NF milk and NF yogurt. You want to get protein and a little more vitamins and minerals, but make sure that you cut down on calories or you will put on weight. I found that I was able to eat solid foods within a couple of days. I was eating a lot of chicken tenders and egg whites too. My doctor warned me about consuming too much calcium, as there is a risk for kidney stones or gall stones, I forget. Good Luck.

I also got out of my exercise routine and I was feeling that for a while, but I am pretty much back on course now. Big changes for me, no more basketball, I traded my road bike in for an old persons bike, and no more lifting heavy things. The last one is important. No more lifting heavy things. I think that screws people up a lot. Looking back, it is probably the thing that screwed me up.

      Greg Bikofsky Agreed! Lifting bags and bags of things and carrying them up flights of stairs didn't help and never again will I attempt to do that again. Good advice ty! • @GregBikofsky
      @GregBikofsky 4 роки тому

      Hi Jordon, it is pretty good. I haven't really tested it. I don't know what caused the herniation to happen in the first place, but I typically didn't act my age when it came to lifting things and physical work, i.e., firewood, large appliances, etc. My resolution after this whole thing was to be much more careful with that kind of physical exertion going forward. Also, I have to say that my grip, and arm strength wasn't really noticeably bad before the surgery. I think that I am probably about the same as before surgery right now. When I play disc golf now, I can throw as far as I did before. One thing that the surgeon said to me was that some of the symptoms, like numbness, would get better over time. I would say that so far that has been true for me.

    • @GregBikofsky
      @GregBikofsky 4 роки тому

      Hi Mark, did you have shoulder pain before the surgery? The reason that I ask is that I didn't have much pain before the surgery. It was mostly tingling and numbness. I still get a little tingling and numbness in the same areas "at times", but it is a lot less than before. I was told that some symptoms can last months or years after surgery. Some may be permanent. For you, is it better than it was before the surgery? Did you have a six week post op with your surgeon? He may have some insight for you with that.

    The most complete proteins are animal based proteins. Plant based protein do not have complete amino acids and needs to be paired with other foods to make them complete. To get more complete protein, I have been eating more lean poulty, fish, egg whites, non-fat milk and plain non-fat yogurt.
